I never listened to Vital Remains before... but I could reccommend some awesome bands.

Turmion Katilot
-A Finnish psycho-billy band that can rock as heavy as Rammstein. While most rock songs go "slash slash slash", this one kinda goes "slice, dice, frappe". I'd say their best song would be 'Verta ja Lihaa'.

Spineshank
-The singing is average but the guitar is pretty hard. Listen to 'New Disease'.

Cheap Trick
-A classic band I'm faithful to. They sang the theme songs to "That 70's Show" and "The Drew Carrey Show". If you like oldschool metal, check out their songs 'You must be dreamin' and 'Reach out'.

Loco
-Almost ridiculously heavy it's not even funny. The vocals are similar to Mudvayne and the heavy pitches tend to blend in with the guitar. 'Demolition' is a good song.

Nevermore
-Crazy and kinda medieval. I recommend 'I am the Dog', it sounds kinda like Dragonball Z at the beginning, then goes into a crazy vocal.

Puya
-A latino rock band, very popular in Mexico. They rap in Spanish at an insanely fast pace and rock at the same time. Listen to 'Fake'.

Coal Chamber
-Their vocals provide a good balance of hard and heavy. 'Big Truck' has to be one of their most popular songs.

Yeah, I'm into metal. s'matter of fact, I'm taking Metal II this quarter. Maybe I can make a chair or something this year...

Oh. OH! You mean that crappy music that's nothing but loud grunts, screams, and random strings struck on an electric guitar? The stuff that just borders, if it doesn't already tip the scale of, emo? The music associated with being listened to by people as they slit their wrists for the upteenth time because their teachers are hell bent on "ruining" their lifes?

...

Meh, it's alright. Not a big fan, but it's so-so. =P

Uhm, *cough* bshng! *cough* okay. Metal was around way before emo. Linkin' Park is emo, so is Green Day. Alot of people in the 80's listened to Metal, they're still around and enjoying the wild-side of life.

Just because it's Metal, doesn't mean it's all negative. You'll hardly hear any suicidal songs. Many of the motives expressed in the new metal involve corruption of the government, violence, homicide and complex hostility towards individuals.

The oldschool metal (if you would at least take the time to listen) was more up-beat than the new songs. As a matter of fact, their messages were very positive. The song 'Reach Out' by Cheap Trick basically says, "If you want something really bad, work for it. Work hard enough and you'll get everything you've ever wanted.". That's just one song, I can talk about at least a hundred more.

Metal does not equal Emo. Metal beats Emo by a landslide.

Metal Knuckles is a dumbass who doesn't know a damn thing about metal.

Unless of course he's joking and I seriously hope he is.

It'd be hard to be that stupid.

The only genre that I can think of that resembles what MK is talking about would be hardcore/fashioncore.

Metal is absolutely not emo, in any way. Metal kids are the #1 reasons why emo kids are afraid to go to shows ( they'll get the shit beat out of them ).

It also requires more talent than you can even comprehend, evidently.

GGS- Vital Remains is a melodic/brutal death metal band. Not classic metal.

I like metal. Some of my favorite bands:

Mercyful Fate
King Diamond
Blue Oyster Cult
Deep Purple
Rainbow
Iron Maiden
Queensryche
Motorhead
Venom

There are others that I like, but I think they qualify more as "hard rock" rather than metal (Thin Lizzy and Queen come to mind). Some of the bands I mentioned above have some hard rock tunes, but they also qualify as heavy metal.

I'll make a short list of what I like...

- Children of Bodom
- Dream Theater*
- Edguy
- Gamma Ray*
- Helloween**
- Iron Maiden
- Metallica
- Rhapsody
- Sonata Arctica
- Stratovarius
- Symphony X
- Warmen

Note: I haven't included bands like AC/DC that could be considered Metal, but the band itself doesn't considered themselves like they were. I also haven't included band that I haven't at least 2-3 albums of them.

*Have tickets for their upcomming gig in Montreal.

** I own the Power Metal classics, "Keeper of the Seven Keys" Part I and Part II

I'm suprised no one has mentioned DragonForce! A lot of you are gamers and you would love them. They're speed metal and their lyrics are about slaying dragons and destroying evil. They're from the UK and have yet to be released in America but they are Ba Dass.

- Hammerfall
- Masterplan
- Yngwie Malmsteen
- Blind Guardian
- Dragonforce
- Avantasia
- Axenstar
- Dark Moor
- Edenbridge.

I think thatīll do. I donīt want to make the list too long.

One of my dreams would be to go to a concert with any of those above.

Heavy metal music, as well as many other forms of entertainment, has been wrongly panned over the years because of the types of people like the ones you have just described, ones who slit their wrists...as well as ones that resort to violent means to their ends, turn into degenerates, etc. Conservatives and the moral majority just love to eat that stuff right up because we live in a world that loves to blame other outside influences such as people and forms of art for the degeneration of society. It protects them from looking inward and having to admit the ACTUAL root cause for such, that being that the people themselves are nuttier than fruitcakes and that we, to a degree, helped to make them that way through our 'good and proper' parenting. it is repression, NOT the outlets through art appreciation and freedom of choice, that creates a nation of imbeciles and the Lemmings who are barely any better who only crawl out of the woodwork to pay attention to them when it comes time to bestow judgement and Hell fire upon them. They deserve each other, really...

If somebody takes a gun and shoots up their school and then slashes their wrists in the name of almighty Lucifer just because some asshole with a guitar told him that he should do it, then I believe that that person's personal problems go far beyond listening to too much Judas Priest or playing too much Grand Theft Auto or watching too many gory slasher flicks. Because I myself can honestly say that in my youth I've seen quite my share of horror movies and played more than my share of violent video games while rocking out in my parents' basement to bands like Prong and Nuclear Assault, and I am now a fairly well-adjusted 33-year old suburbanite with a loving fiancee, a roof over my head, and a pretty decent job that doesn't involve slinging trash or throwing french fries into a grease cooker or dealing illegal substances on the street, one that actually involves real work and responsibilities. My rap sheet, if you could call it that, consists solely of a few measly traffic tickets, all paid and taken care of. Man, all that art appreciation I partook of back then really turned me into a raving lunatic, didn't it?

And before anyone comes out and says "everybody handles these things differently", you're absolutely right. Sane people with a grip on reality handle stimuli much differently than insane, irrational, and delusional people. All the more reason not to lump everybody and everything in the same boat.

The fact that disgruntled laborers and students who take their guns to their places of business and learning were already a few fries short of a Happy Meal before Slayer ever even got ahold of their ears never seems to occur to those who dictate what is right and wrong for the masses. So the next time some waste of otherwise good sperm and eggs puts a shotgun in his mouth and gives the entertainment industry a bad name, let's do this. Let's, for once, look beyond the tried and true scapegoat philosophy and stop blaming the arts and movies and video games for everything going on in these people's excuses for heads and start taking a look at the real reasons for why these people are fucked up...themselves! The only way we're going to solve these problems is by getting to the root cause, not through the "redeeming" powers of judgement and damnation.

Remember this...what you've been told about situations like these is fed to you through the media, and the media is controlled by the government. And the government would, deep down, love nothing better than to silence people and oppress their freedom of self-expression. And getting rid of all art and entertainment is one battle in the war being fought by them to achieve these aims. Do I need to paint you a picture?

*** Steps down off the podium now...***

I can't believe no one here has mentioned Mudvayne. My brother Matt has recently gotten me into these guys because he knows how much I love progressive rock and stuff with weird off-rhythms in it, stuff he refers to as "Math Metal". Mudvayne are the bee's knees, a very musical band with shitloads of talent! Oh, and just thought I'd mention that two weekends ago I finally had an opportunity to see Prong live, they are phenomenal! They, along with Sleep Infection and Overkill ripped the roof off the Recher Theater here in Baltimore.

I would recommend all of the following for a good Metal fix:

Judas Priest
Prong
Sleep Infection
Megadeth (Old school stuff, "Peace Sells" era...)
Led Zeppelin
Overkill
Metallica (Old school stuff only!!! Preferably "Master Of Puppets" era...?)
Dream Theater
D.R.I.
Joe Satriani
Nuclear Assault
Mudvayne
KIX
Extreme (First two albums...)
Fishbone
Godsmack
Alice In Chains
KISS
Black Sabbath (Ozzy era...)

EDIT: Good god! How did I forget to mention Pantera?!!?

It was DarkSlaya who posted the list. Not Sion.

As for metal listening habits. I am partial to Metallica and Sepultura. Maybe a bit of Slayer.

Also I fail to see how Godmsack can be mentioned in this thread.

Godsmack = metal?

Not really. But that is just my thought.

At the moment I listen to the following bands (that have not yet been mentioned in this thread):

- Stonegard (These guys only have one cd out ('Arrows'), but hey, it's good.)
- In Flames
- Soilwork
- Opeth

Dark Tranquillity is a band that is similar to In Flames, but I only have one record of them.

I donīt know why I thought it was Sion. Maybe it reminded me of his posts.

My bad.

Btw, I heard a really good song by Sepultura a long time ago. Canīt remember itīs name or how it goes. It sounded like some metallica song, I think. Wasnīt like Death Metal in which it sounds like theyīre only screaming random things.

I've listened to metal since I was young. I also don't see how some people see bands being metal when they aren't at all like saying some of these newer bands and they also see that the term metal being as a band that plays heavy or hard music and screaming through the whole song. I kinda consider those as new metal which isn't as good as what is true metal
Some bands of choice for me include...
1) Metallica
2) AC/DC
3) Black Sabbath
4) Ozzy Osbourne
5) Judas Priest
6) Slayer
7) Megadeth
8) Led Zeppelin
9) Alice in Chains
10) Def Leopard
11) Iron Maiden

And so on.

The Devin Townsend Band is my favorite metal band, followed by the original Black Sabbath. My overall favorite metal album, however, is Sigh's Imaginary Sonicscape. It's so creative and pleasing.

After that, it's a buncha death metal, grindcore, metalcore, black metal, and stuff like that, and recently I've been getting into more thrash.

I saw this DragonForce video, here. It's fuggin' insane and hilarious. I'm told that all their songs pretty much sound the exact same though. But, you know, it's a power metal band, and since they've managed to actually kick ass and make me smile, they've gotta be worthwhile. :)

Metal? Dat's de devil's music!

Nah. Truth be told, I'm not that big into metal. Which kinda sucks, seeing as how I work in a bar/night club/pub with a live stage in Norway, so I get to hear a lot of metal concerts throughout the year (for those not in the know, metal is quite big over here. Heck, I think "Scandinavian Metal" has pretty much become a genre of its own, no?). For example, Stonegard, as was mentioned in this here thread, I've seen live while working. During By:larm, I worked while Allfader, Sahg, Enslaved, and Insense played. Sadly, I was not too impressed.

I'm big into grunge music, though, a genre which I'd say borrows a lot from metal (and which some newer metal in turn has borrowed from).

All in all, though, I'd have to say that most metal bands are quite talented (disregarding the newer grindcore/nu-metal style bands, of course), but the music is just not for me.
