Hey, Sweden does WELL at World Cups... I'd say you guys would be one of the dark horses and could make it to the QF's with a good draw.

Congratulations to all the Aussies out there who FINALLY get to see their team in the World Cup.

By the same token, condolences to all the Norwegians.

He didn't retire. He was released/fired (depending who you want to believe) by Man U.

Odds are he heads to Celtic. ^___^

Also, I like the austrailian team the best. I hope they do well.

By the way, if that's real football, then what should our (US) football be called? Handball? =o

Actually, I think they call it gridiron or American football actually.

Then again, Australia calls it soccer so...

Yes, Celtic are my team and I think that's been made pretty obvious before. It's Keane's favorite team so as long as he wants to talk and as long as we can negotiate a paycut, he's probably there.

Blah, we got screwed by FIFA, is all. I can picture the conversation went a little bit like this:

Lennart: Um, mr. Blatter, sir, we seem to be having a problem in the UEFA Qualification groups.
Sepp: What is it now, mr. Johansson?
Lennart: Well, seems like both Spain and the Czech Rep. will be forced into playoff qualification..
Sepp: And so...?
Lennart: Well, they're both big, popular teams, it'd be a shame to not have them in the World Cup, an economic shame, that is... The big teams draw the big crowds, you know.
Sepp: Well, they'll probably win their playoff qualification matches. Nothing to worry about, mr. Johansson...
Lennart: But, what if they were to draw each other? Then they wouldn't both make it....
Sepp: Eeeeeep! Eeeeeep! I didn't think of that! Ummm, the financial reprecussions of that would be terrible.... Ummm, can we rig the draw?
Lennart: Hm, dunno, it's not as easy as it used to be...
Sepp: I've got it! What if we make, like, a rule stating that the teams that are the highest on the FIFA rankings are seeded in the draw, that way they couldn't draw each other!
Lennart: Great thinking, mr. Blatter!
Sepp: That's why I'm president, mr. Johansson.... Well, that and certain dubious contributions of money to poor football associations.

You see, I wouldn't be mad if they'd have had the seeding rules for playoffs with the FIFA Rankings as indicator of seedings from the start of qualification. What pisses me off is how they changed it to be that way from the original "no seedings will be used in the playoffs" towards the end of the qualification groups, when they realized that Spain and the Czech Rep might not make it. I'm not saying we would have mad it if they would have changed it, but I'm pretty sure we'd stand a fairer chance against Switzerland or Slovakia than the Czech Rep.

They should have said whether they were using seedings or not at the start of qualifying. At least if they were honest then there wouldn't be any complaints. But then they had to change things around and...

World Cup draw better be live on TV here. I'm trying to figure out the seedings... Brazil, Argentina, Italy, England and Holland would be automatics I'd think.

No-one who isn't Australia has ANY RIGHT to complain about being screwed by FIFA. We've ended up having to move to another fucking Association (Asia) just to get a fair go.

For the last few world cups, Australia's qualifying route from Oceania has been to play all the Oceania teams, but because they're easy to beat, no European clubs would ever let us have our players. Some players risked their contracts and careers to make it to our games (Harry Kewell for one) but it was an uphill battle.

So we ended up winning Oceania most of the time, sometimes New Zealand put up a fight but usually not. But we did it without access to our best players, which means bad preparation.

Then, instead of, as champion of the OFC, getting automatic entry like the champion of EVERY OTHER CONFEDERATION, we had to play a South American side.

Bear in mind, this is a one-off, two-match qualifier series, months after the OFC playoff. This means no match practice as a unit, often the players haven't even played together for weeks or months. And it's an all-or-nothing thing, one shot, no second chances... very different from the pools and round robins of other playoffs. In short, we got thrown into (by far) the toughest match on our calendar with the worst possible preparation--no good matches with our best side. And often, it was a real fight to even GET our best team because European clubs are mostly cunts.

Meanwhile, freaking CONCACAF somehow gets three automatic spots so powerhouses like Jamaica and Honduras get a shot... and they get a playoff for a fourth against an Asian side (incidentally, Trinidad made it by beating Bahrain this time around) while we're stuck going to Colombia or Uruguay or Venezuela to play a top-class side that actually has match fitness.

We've tried, repeatedly, to secure a fairer deal, either an OFC automatic entry or playing off against an Asian side (which would make a lot more geographic sense)... but every time, our lack of clout has seen FIFA politics, ie, the clout of Europe or South America, screwing us over and keeping us in such a shitty situation.

Things should be better starting next time. Australia's moving to Asia, which will mean access to huge new markets, its competitive club championships, a decent and fair set of world cup qualifiers, and so forth. Australian soccer might actually GO somewhere.

So I guess my point is, Europeans really have no right to feel hard-done-by by FIFA. Try being at the obscure periphery of the football world instead of at one of its two main cores.

Besides, I don't really think the precise make-up of the European contingent at the WC is going to have a huge bearing on revenue. It's the world cup, it's IN GERMANY, people are going to go see the games regardless of whether the Czechs or Spanish are there.

Only problem now is that soccer in the Oceania region is screwed now since the best team is New Zealand and they're not that great. :\ My guess is that sometime in the next 10 years, the OFC will just end up merging with the AFC.

Tromso over Red Star! All you have to do is beat Basel in your final match and that SHOULD be enough. Staying alive.

If we beat Basel, we're pretty much there, I'd say. If we beat Basel while Crvena Zvezda (or Red Star, if you want) ties Roma, we are there (Crvena Zvezda will have 1 point while we're at 6, so they're no threat then. Roma and Basel will be at 5 and 3, so even though they'll both be in range of us, they can't both pass us, seeing as how they pley each other in their final match).

Should Crvena Zvezda beat Roma, we'll have Roma at 4, Basel at 3 and Crvena Zvezda at 3. If that is the case, we could be eliminated if Crvena Zvezda beats Strasbourg with enough goals to pass us on goal diff while either Roma beats Basel or Basel beats Roma with enough goals to pass us on goal diff. In this scenario, if Basel and Roma ties us, we're there regardless of the Strasbourg vs. Crvena Zvezda match. Also, if Crvena Zvezda should fail to beat Strasbourg by enough to pass us, tie Strasbourg or lose to them, we'd be safe, regardless of the Roma vs. Basel match.

Should Roma beat Crvena Zvezda, we'll have Roma at 7, Basel at 3, and Crvena Zvezda at 0. Roma will have passed us then regardless, while Crvena Zvezda will not be able to pass us. Then it's all up to the Roma vs. Basel match. If Basel loses, ties, or wins by less goals than what is required to pass us on goal difference, we'd be through to the next round. If Basel beats Roma by enough to pass us, however, we're out.

That being said, there is a scenario that would allow us to go through to the next round even if we tie Basel. If that is the case, Roma had better Beat both Crvena Zvezda and Basel. Should Basel get points vs. Roma, or Crvena Zvezda beat Roma and Strasbourg, we'd pretty much be out.

On a totally unrelated sad footballing note, legend (I was about to write "living legend") George Best died today. Though I was too young to ever see him live in action (as I assume you all were, as well), I've seen recordings, and he was truly one of the greatest to ever play the beautiful game.

So... loss = gone, tie = not good, win = good but not great. If only you had a point from the Roma game.

Celtic will honor Best in a unusual way tomorrow... a minute of applause as opposed to the typical minute of silence. I like it.
