I was just wondering about the intro sequence when you enter a castle. What determines whether or not it has a "nighttime" background (like in the Vanilla Dome and the Valley of Bowser)?

I believe that is determined by your current submap. Vanilla Dome and Valley of Bowser result in night backgrounds, and all the rest would probably result in daytime ones. Same thing probably applies to the No-Yoshi sign and day and night there.

Super Mario World Entrance Level Repointer.
Its readme says Smallhacker thinks it's determined by the level number, but is not sure.
