What's this one like? |

The two should not be compared. Really. They shouldn't. They're VERY different games.
That said...it's AMAZING. |

Even if they're very different games, they were made by the same studio, and largely with the same philosophy of making a game very different from other games, in their own particular style. They're two ways of showing some of the same principles, even if they come out very differently. At least, that's what I've been told. I need to play SotC.

El, have you played God of War? If not, screw SotC and play it. If you did and you liked it, then chances are very high that you'll like Shadow.

I've downed the first three and it's a brilliant feeling when you do. However, it's not a truely great game because of the god-forsaken camera. I mean cameras have been bad before, but this camera literally makes it more difficult to play than if it was just fixed. Honestly, I weep for this game. It's on the verge of greatness and marred by a barely tested camera. Absolutely senseless.

Barring what Kas just said...
OH GOD I LOVE THIS GAME SO MUCH. SO SO MUCH. Just the moment of elation you get in the space between watching the gargantuan beasts fall and the shadowy tentacle rape that scares the shit out of you afterwards is enough to make this game awesome. That, and the horse. The horse, people. He is by far the greatest video game character of our generation. Beat the game once and you'll see why. |

just bought it today, and so far it is awesome, battles against oversized rock type monsters is kick ass.
when I beat the first boss, and those tentacles jabbed into me I thought I died lol... (edited by dcahrakos on 02-24-06 11:32 PM) |

I beat the first monster, haven't played in a while. It's quite a shock when that giant foot smashes you right before victory. I've also seen SotC running on the store display HDTV, those jaggies it uncovers would totally ruin my experience. It's better with a standard set.

Oh, I thought I'd let you know I'm lucky enough to own the limited edition PAL digipack copy of the game, complete with art cards and extra material such as a making-of (I think ). I've got a complete collection along with the Ico digipack too Gotta love limited editions

Originally posted by Plus Sign Abomination Well, there wasn't really all that much to read, so yes, I did read it. And it was actually more your note that they shouldn't be compared. So really what I was saying was that it wasn't really THAT unfair to compare them as you were saying. And you seem REALLY sensitive to thinking that people, particularly people such as myself, don't really read your posts, when it's clear that you don't get the main thrust of said person's reply. |

Originally posted by SWAT CatOriginally posted by Plus Sign Abomination When he was asking for similarities I assumed that they would be in terms of gameplay and presentation. Your statement of the studio "philosophy" may be true, but as I've played both games I judged that although they do have similar artistic merits they are both very seperate and it is completely unfair to judge them one upon the other. If SotC was a direct sequel to ICO then I'd feel it a more fair comparison. SotC, like ICO, should be compared to other genre giants from other studios if a comparison must be made. As to the second part of your post...I'd suppose that it is the way that you post and address things that leaves me wanting more clarification. You seem to post in a way that makes your statements clear, yet leaves their origins quite vague. I would say that the final part of your post "when it's clear that you don't get the main thrust of said person's reply" is more an insult than anything, though. |

Well, I'm sorry that you took that last part as an insult, but it was really more of an observation than anything, as both times you've done that to me you have essentially attempted to 'summarize' my post...and in doing so, revealed exactly what I said.
As for comparing the games, I think it's a fair comparison, and right to tell him thus, in that while the gameplay may be substantially different, ICO, and from what I understand SotC as well (Though I liked Wanda and the Colossus better as a title), are not really simply about the gameplay to make a great game, but about a really immersive experience, stemming as I indicated from the design philosophies of the makers of the games. As such, even if the mechanics of gameplay and the specific goals differ, the experience may be similar in some senses. |

I played through like ten minutes of ICO, the original.... and got completely bored out of my mind.
Does it pick up after like... the first ten minutes? Or am I just a dolt with absolutely no attention span? |

It definitely picks up after the first ten minutes. I felt the same way as you did when I was first going through the game. Then a couple years ago my roommate, who is convinced it's the greatest game there is, all but forced me to give it another chance. So I did, and I liked it a lot...though I do think it's not THAT good...but certainly quite a good game, albeit a bit short.

I am convinced that Ico is in the highest order of games. We're talking the extra special elite that are just matched by nothing else but others in their order. Knights of the Gaming Round Table:
The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time Final Fantasy VII Ico Half Life Mario 64 Gran Turismo World of Warcraft Halo could qualify but I haven't played it, so it can't go in there really. (edited by Kasumi-Astra on 02-26-06 06:05 PM) |

Half Life and Goldeneye >>Halo, Kas
Tetris also should be on that list with a G.T.A game too |

My list would be far different.
C&C RA2 Risk Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker Street Fighter III Ridge Racer Final Fantasy Tactics Advance Halo Pokemon Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic SotC I chose lots of these games for different reasons. C&C RA2 is the pinnacle, I feel anyways, of the RTS genre. It is fast, funny and imaginative. Something very few RTS manage to pull off. Risk, the board game, is Heaven on Earth of all games. LoZ: WW...sure I criticized it at first, then I really started to enjoy the artistic merits of the cel-shading that they did...even with some of the dark storyline content. It is Nintendo's Poem of the Cid. A childlike presentation of some fairly mature content. Street Fighter III. Amazing characters, killer music, fun gameplay. The ultimate fighter. Ridge Racer. This series has always held a special place in my heart - not sure why. It's a fairly middling racing series, but its easy accessibility makes it fun. If racing could be epic, this is it. FFTA is easily accessible, fun, lots of stuff to do, allows for interaction with your friends. It's really one of the best games released on the GBA or any system. Very good presentation with a good amount of depth made it ideal for kids and older gamers alike. Halo is probably the most accessible shooter ever. The storyline is amazingly well crafted, the gameplay is superb. Halo was in no way innovative and it offered no revolutionary departure in anything. It's only revolution is that it set out to do everything Bungie wanted it to do. It's a revolution in the fact that every facet of it does what its supposed to do perfectly. Pokemon is a well-fleshed out concept that ages well. Perfect for kids and with enough depth and complexity to challenge even strategy fans well into their teens and beyond. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Move over Japan, I think your RPG crown was officially supplanted by this game. Amazing storyline, gorgeous sights to see, fun and innovative...Best RPG I've ever touched. SotC is unique in that there are major flaws - but the flaws don't matter. This is exp |

What I tried to put into my list were the one-off special events of gaming. The most undisputed greats. The superbands of the gaming world, the Led Zeppelins of gaming. In my opinion only a few could probably fit into this category, these would be:
Final Fantasy VII Ocarina of Time Super Mario 64 Super Mario Brothers 3 And that would be it. These are the gods of gaming that are always associated with "best game ever". The ones I put in by personal opinion: Ico Gran Turismo Half Life World of Warcraft The only reason I mentioned Halo is because it's one of the two outstanding Edge 10 out of 10 reviews. The other being Half Life 2, of course. I've never played Red Alert 2 but I have played the original. It's a damned good game, but from what I've played of it Warcraft 3 is my favorite. Wind Waker is indeed a good game, but it's a dwarf to Ocarina of Time's giant. Ocarina of Time is simply one of the most important games in gaming history, and I think only Link to the Past and the original Legend of Zelda can contend with it. |
