| Hey. Well, I've got myself into quite a pickle, and just want to know some stuff. If you guys know anything I don't, then that'd be nice to know.
My Laptop's hard drive had a head crash. Full thing. Click of death. I tried to reboot it (I knew it was a bad idea, but I tried anyway) and failed. It had about 2 reboot attempts and 3 minutes total of sustained head crash. I need data which I accumulated over a year of logs. Only 20 gig of the drive was used, and I only need at most 600 MB of logs. What are the chances of them surviving so that some sort of data recovery guys could get it off? |

| Well, that really sucks. If it was a hard drive crash, a lot of things could have happened. But how this looks, I don't think your files will last, unless it's just a power failure in the system. I once lost a whole bunch of files when I got off my laptop but by the time some one got on a hour later, the files were gone. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think your files will survive. | |||

| Eh... it was only on for about 3 minutes while head crashing. And I forgot to mention; it was a 60 GB drive in total. But there is a good chance of all the data being gone, yeah, depending on where it crashed... but can't hurt to ask around. Thanks for the info, since this is the first time it happened to me. | |||

PGTM: Try to stick to the topic. 
Dei: I doubt it's a motherboard issue, as faulty motherboards generally don't cause the "CLICK OF DEATH." 
MM88: It's probably as good as toast. Spinning platter + thrashing head + 3 minutes = massive swath of destruction. Besides, even if it was still salvageable, data recovery is an extremely expensive process, since it must be done in a clean room with specialized equipment. I'm pretty sure it's at least a few thousand dollars. Unless you're rich or run a business, you're probably out of luck.  |
