Right. Because we all know those who take the time to think up and change the graphics have no imagination and those who don't bother obviously do.
You make my brain sad. Please die. |

i think the biggest part of the problem is that people who don't know how to rip graphics are told by the majority here that if they don't change the original graphics their hack isn't worth playing. then they probably resort to smas graphics because of how accessible they are.
but i definitely agree with how stale they've gotten. I'd even take it a step further and say they've always been stale. also, on a somewhat related note/rant, i'll never understand why people use the mario bros 3 all stars sprite in mario world. it looks worse than the original world one (imo) and it just doesn't fit. |

I couldn't care less about rips. As long as the level design and gameplay is good and the game itself is fun, i'll play it no matter what. SMAS rips shouldn't be a problem. They fit most hacks perfectly, Like in "Super Mario Elemental Worlds". The problem is when hackers is using them in the wrong situation or ugling them up with bad FG.

Ok, first off, what I'm about to say isn't because I actually know peter, it's how I feel as a SMW hacker myself....
Yes, SMAS graphics has been used alot, so what!? Why does graphics and level design have to be such a serious subject around the SMW hacking community. Why can't hackers just do whatever the hell they want. SMAS GFX look good. If you don't like SMAS GFX in someone elses hack, DON'T FUCKING PLAY IT IF YOU HATE IT SO MUCH!!! I gaurrantee most of you will end up downloading peter's hack anyway right? @Xk: I'm sure a hack with SMAS graphics were better than any of your hacks |

@Link2006: Watch it, that acronym is a bannable offense :O
@Shanius: Apparently, a game with ugly graphics and bad level design just isn't enjoyable to play ...also, what hacks has XKeeper done? o.o |

From someone who has... Accomplished something?
Very well, then. SMAS rips do not make your hack pretty. At all. Especially when you use them for every level... like hundreds of other hacks. Learn something, guys: originality. Using the same graphics hundreds of other hacks use is boring, and I'm going to punch everyone who says "oooh nice graphics" -- especially if they're just SMAS rips, or YI rips (which are equally overused now, sadly) |

Because someone hasn't done anything in the SMW community, doesn't mean their advice is worthless. Being blunt, the majority of the users of this forum have done very little in the field of SMW hacking. How many new discoveries or new utilities have been made by the users of this forum? Very few lately. I can actually only think of a handful of people who have actually done useful stuff in SMW hacking lately.
The simple fact is the SMAS graphics have been overused so much, they are as bland as the game's original graphics. Any idiot with half a brain could see that. Graphics do matter in hacks, they serve to draw users to actually play the hack. Not many SMW hacks have done that for me lately. |

Haha. Peter, I have no ill feeling towards you, and I don't believe Xk does either. Your attempts were... Expansive, to say the least. With all of it changed, you don't see the contrasts visible in other works. This thread is aimed at other people who have taken your work and made utterly halfhearted efforts with them... And there are so many of them that at this point it's just stale.

Originally posted by Alastor the Stylish THANK YOU. Like I said, I'm blaming the people that raped your works for their overly-open nature. You could have just done a quick lock in Lunar Magic, and if someone wants to use your stuff, they can use RLM. For one thing it's still open to use, but you restrict the complete blithering morons from using it... well, mostly |

peter_ac gets allstars immunity on his SMAS styled hacks. It only made sense to use those graphics in a game that directly emulated, say, SMB. But for any of his other hacks, he is not. There's no good reason to use them. They don't even make things feel Mario since Mario often looked and played totally differently in the games that had those graphics.
Omitting the hacks that actually tried to be SMAS games... SMAS rips do not make your hack pretty. At all. Especially when you use them for every level... like hundreds of other hacks. If you want to use SMAS graphics, I have no problem with that... though bragging about it or going "nice GFX" is a bit much.

Had someone write you a SMB -> SMW level converter and then use it, simply loading and saving all the levels into SMW? Wow, amazing, someone did all of the work for you. Way go to. Originally posted by Dagsha Well... Yes, actually. I made a program which converts SMB levels to MWLs. It's original purpose was not to help p_ac, but to gain some level format experience, both when it comes to SMW and SMB. Note: The program was VERY primitive, only supported a few objects, etc. In fact, it could only export four or five levels, since I was too lazy to find any more level addresses. Now that I think about it... I'm pretty sure that the program didn't help p_ac at all. |

This is all pretty pointless when you think about it, I mean, nice graphics don't make a good hack. Sure, they make it better, but in the end, solid level design and playability are all that matters. Remember, hacks are supposed to be fun.

i think rips in general are pretty overused.
i do miss level only hacks like FPI's first one, containing tons of interesting level ideas and amazing level design. If you are going to use rips do like BMF: add ASM to it to change something on SMW and add new stuff. Too much rips and few coding . |
