...God, this thread has turned into a goddamn spamming, bashing warzone....
How 'bout I say something that's actually relevant?

THE SCREENIES ARE TEH AWESOMEST!!!!!!!!!1
Honestly, I see this as a good piece of work. When you get back to doing this, jp, it should be even more awesome than it is now.

And another thing. Why is everyone bashing anime? What's wrong with it? I just don't understand why some people have such shitty opinions.

Anime's awesome, and this hack respects that.

M'kay? Now if we're finally done, though, I'm going to stop adding on.

But one last thing...

All of you. Shut up with these stupid comments. Don't respond to obvious trolling and flaming.

And Skie... Trolling's not cool. Don't start that crap here.

And for the record, I dislike anime because, like most media, it tends to (but is not always; there are some anime that I like) be cliche-ridden and suffer from poor plotlines and pointless angst. Most anime also suffers from a poor budget, which means stock footage, lazy in-betweening, and just poor animation in general... And also, I dislike the most common art styles used.

Hell, yes.

I mean... No, that about sums it up. Just look at the japanese Mario text. Look at some of the poor level designs. Look at the terrible glitches that made the final release. Look at, well, everything. Barf!

Clockwork's comment about changing the genre being groundbreaking really annoys me. I made a terrible, terrible hack called Mariostrocity. It kinda changed the way the game worked. You went through level after level without an overworld and with an extremely small time limit and Mario was replaced with Goomba graphics. Was it different? Sure. Groundbreaking? Of course not. Good? It was terrible.

I don't give a flying rat's fuck about it "feeling" like a Mario game. You want a hack? You got one. And this is by far the best hack I've seen. Ever. It actually twists the genre of it, and that's a ground breaking feat in the world of Super Mario ROM Hacking. So quit fucking complaining. It's a goddamned hack. Don't play it if you don't like it. You're all acting like a bunch of fucking pricks.

I'll have to agree with the bolded parts. If you don't like a game, would you buy it anyway? I hope not. Then why would it be different for rom hacking when altogether you can ignore it?

I am done with this topic going off topic. The fact of the matter is that this hack is different and that is great to some, not great to others. If you are the others, then don't comment. Don't begin arguing. Just stop. You don't have to post to a more-than-1-page thread if you don't want to, especially with nothing but defenses to arguing inside the thread.

I also respect everyone's rights to their own opinion. I would highly suggest you do so as well since we all have to post here and if you don't like someone's opinion, well... then quit acting like it is supposed to be a fact. This isn't a test, this is a message board. A message board in which people have their own things to say. Don't repect it? Then don't bother with it. Very simple thing to do that none of you can really grasp...

jp, if you are still looking here, I would suggest just packaging the hack and releasing the demo now just so that this stupid argument can be over with. I am indeed interested in it and want to try it out.

If I am acting like a mod, sorry. I am just tired of this BS.

Heh, I love how Crysillion just doesn't get it. This hack can't be any good, because it won't fit within SMW's limitations? Inability to create NPCs or new enemies and edit the bosses will reduce the quality?

What the fuck.

Let me tell you a few of the original SMW's limitations: Levels have to be arranged in a very specific order on the overworld. Objects can only use 2 Map16 pages. There are only 16 different tilesets, many of which share graphics. Graphics are restricted to 3BPP (8 colours). There are only a few different palettes which share many colours. The number of objects and sprites each level can use is significantly limited. Time limits can only be 200, 300, 400 or infinity. Levels 000-0FF can't link to or from levels 100-1FF.
Lunar Magic itself removes these restrictions by simply reprogramming the game to overcome them. No, the original SMW engine can't support NPCs, but that doesn't mean they can't be used. Don't want to be stuck with SMW enemies? More than possible. You just have to code in support yourself. jp has already overcome several other limitations, such as adding the ability to switch Mario's graphics and allowing for cutscenes, by changing more of the code. Hell, look at how many custom blocks exist that do a lot of neat things the original SMW couldn't do. There were no blocks in the original SMW that boosted you to maximum speed or teleported you to another level. By your logic no hack could ever contain something that uses these, yet, dozens do.

The whole point of ROM hacking is changing the game. If the original programming doesn't support what you want, then modify it. "It's still Super Mario World" - no it isn't! It merely uses mostly the same programming.

Obviously I can't judge how well the game plays just from screenshots, but they look awesome.

You don't have to change the code to allow for cutscenes. Like I said, there's a semi-cumbersome method of doing it RIGHT NOW. It's only a theory of mine - I've never tried it. But I'm confident it will work.

ASDF... if you want a real story, you really, really do need to change the text boxes. A single one of my posts often takes up several levels worth of message boxes.

Damn straight. Building an unrelated story with obvious SMW enemies and bosses with minor graphical changes is bad.

Uh, yeah. Mostly the same enemies, music, tiles, and physics too.

jp has done a lot to fix these problems. I respect that. But extensive hacks that would wow in a regular SMW hack are necessary to make a hack like this work, and that's why I think this is a bad idea.

Just try making a story type hack without ASM. You're forced to face something remarkably like Bowser to end the game, forced to deal with the blips, beeps and whirs of SMW, forced to deal with blocks, Mario's physics, Mario's powerups, and all kinds of other things that make a serious hack look bad in general?

Sure, ASM can fix the little things. But there's just too much to fix. You'd have to devote incredible amounts of time to stop SMW from still being SMW at heart. More time than, I believe, anyone has ever spent on SMW hacking. Even Fu.

It's not always necessary to make huge ASM hacks to change the feel of the game... sometimes all it takes is imagination and making good use of the resources that are already available.

I wanted my hack to have an expanded story, so I needed a way to have cut scenes, to tell what's going on between levels...

So I came up with the idea of having horizontal levels, with no vertical scrolling, that had a horizontal platform spanning the whole level, located right under the status bar. That upper area of the screen would be covered by black priority-enabled tiles, and the palette entries used for the status bar would be set to black as well.

The area below could be used to display any desired text and/or graphics.

Mario would then start the level in that upper area, and its movement would be tightly restricted by special blocks that would only let the player move between the different screens of the cut scene, when a button is pressed.

The first prototype for this idea used right-only blocks and... MickeyK's pipes!

Later I started working in a more sophisticated set of blocks that boosted Mario with the exact speed to scroll and stop at the next screen, filtered or disabled controller input as needed, and played a sound effect. It also scrolled much faster than MickeyK's pipes.

For text, I had 2 sets of Map16 character blocks, one for layer 1 and the other for layer 2. When combined they let you have 8x8 text. Cumbersome to write, but it works fine.

And for the GFX, it was as simple as using special ExGFX as needed and a custom palette.

Am I only one noticing the obvious pattern going on here?

"-offtopic comment towards me or someone else- But enough going off-topic"

"Crysillion, let me tell you something, now back on topic"

"Enough of this bickering, they're idiots. Back on topic"

That's not really clever to go offtopic ON PURPOSE and further the argument ON PURPOSE, then try to look good by saying "lol now back on topic" It'd be back on topic if you people would stop going off topic with it.

I didn't even read the posts about the "Lol Crysillion, let me tell u sumfin gud" because I knew it was the same shit. It all amounts to this.

You all blew my text way out of porportion ( "Worst idea" was a bit much, but notice how some people actually learned to -ignore- that ). And what it all boils down to is, is because I have an opinion thats not the same as yours, it's time to bash the new guy, and try to prove him wrong. You can't set my mind straight, I've had my say on this, why the hell do you insist on me changing my mind?

I'm not going to jump up and say "LOL, AWESOMEZZZZZZ" anytime soon, so for once, do what you actually claim to be doing, and drop the fucking subject.

I am chilled. I'm just pointing out how retarded people can be, trying to act slick by going off topic, throwing some random bullshit at me, then ending it with "back on topic" the the next posting person hop onto the same bandwagon. Fact is, I've tried to stop this subject before. It isn't doing too well. So, I'll try this one more time.

I dislike your hack, but you know my opinions, so I guess thats the end of that. In any case, good luck with it. I suppose any ROM can turn out to be good, it just all comes down to personal liking, and this isn't my fit. So thats all there is to it. I'd like if nobody else popped out and said.. "Crys, shut the fuck up", or else it'll be another circle.

If it sounds technical, it is , but to put it simple it's just a 'copy and paste'.

Some notes:

* Anything you write to the ROM has to be protected by a RATS tag, so that Lunar Magic knows it must not be overwritten, otherwise it might get corrupted!

* The code of my block to trigger the DMA transfer was:

A9 05 8D FC 1D A9 00 8D 02 43 A9 90 8D 03 43 A9 22 8D 04 43 A9 FF 8D 05 43 A9 5F 8D 06 43 A9 00 8D 81 21 A9 20 8D 82 21 A9 7E 8D 83 21 A9 80 8D 01 43 A9 00 8D 00 43 A9 01 8D 0B 42 60

However keep in mind that it uses a fixed source address which I don't remember right now (I feel like my IQ dropped 20 points since I'm not hacking SMW anymore! ) I think it was a little after &H111111, I'll look into it later. The number is in the hex code anyway, if you feel like looking for it

I also had a small Basic program for automatically extracting sprites from a ZSNES savestate, I can provide that too if needed.

Hmm... if that can make your sprites change in the beggining of a level, then someone could edit this block so it only changes if you're Luigi. That way, we'd have different graphics for each brother The only problem will be in the map screen, where the "walking Luigi" in the top-left corner will be still like Mario... Except if there's a way of removing that Mario via ASM or hex...

(P.S.: Sorry for any mistakes in my not-the-best English)

EDIT: I'll post this is the ASM/Custom Block request thread before someone tells me to do so

I can't test it right now but I'm pretty sure that the Overworld Mario sprites in the top left corner are the same, so if you change them in a level they'll reflect it in the OW.

In fact, I doubt the sprites get updated ever, once the ROM is loaded.

About the small OW mario sprites, I never tried to change them, but there's no reason why they couldn't be changed with DMA transfers.
