Yeah, this is totally crazy. At random times, my mouse totally starts to act mental. pretending its clicking, and goes at crazy speeds in very weird directions. Ultimately closing myself out of the internet, and clicking odd things on my desktop.
I blame spyware, but...... I'm scared, guys.... ![]() |

I don't know the answer, but I've seen this before on machines that have overheated.
The answer tended to be a reboot for those machines. It would do it even after a complete reinstall of the OS, so it's something hardware usually... |

I had an old Intellimouse Optical that would do that. I upgraded to a newer version (same mouse), and it stopped.
If you can, try to borrow another mouse from someone for a while (or buy a cheap one you can easily return), and see if it does the same thing. |

I've had that happen both when something got stuck in an optical mouse's sensor (no random clicking though) and when one's cord shorted out (also jammed the keyboard). | |||

I've owned two different Microsoft Intellimouse or whatever things and seen a third that did this. Only the moving, though, not clicking. But sometimes my own clicking was sufficient: if I was moving the mouse and clicking, it might scoot into the top right corner and close the window. If I was about to double-click something, the top right corner would close two windows and the top left would close the current window. Pretty annoying... especially in games. My current mouse still does this occasionally. It hasn't done it in a while, though... seems to have calmed down over the past few weeks. That's in contrast with my previous mouse, which got worse and worse until it stopped responding entirely. In fact, I had a thread about that at the time.
So... aside from the clicking, your problem sounds very similar to mine, which I am going to blame on defective hardware in the Microsoft mice. |

Sounds similar to oh-so-many hardware issues. Usually getting a new mouse gets rid of the problem
Do you have a Microsoft mouse? I forget which number, but you can call one of their lines and say your mouse is defective. They ask for the P/N at the bottom to confirm it's a real piece of hardware and you're not cheating them, then they ask for a mailing address to send you a new mouse for no charge. You can do this for just about any hardware with "Microsoft" written on it. |

I can honestly say without a doubt that Microsoft uses the cheapest microswitches possible in their mouse buttons. I've owned two Intellimouse Opticals and one Basic (ball) mouse, and all three deteriorated to the point where I couldn't click and drag something without dropping it at least once, unless I held the button REALLY hard. |
