Kwan pulls out of the Ladies Figure Skating Competition... So, is there any favorite now?
Bode Miller and Apollo Ohno fall short of their bid for medals... looks like U.S. momentum is starting to wane...

Lars Bystøl, of all people, got our first gold for us. Now, Liv-Grete Skjelbreid might get gold in my favorite winter sport, biathlon. All she has to do is knock down all the 5 targets on the last shooting (she might even make it with one miss).

Shaun White's win in the half pipe yesterday was extreme. He had already won before his first round, and only had to showboat his way through it. Hats off to him and the US for that.

Edit: 3 misses, that's just not good enough...

Kwan wasn't the favorite in the first place, I don't think. Sports Illustrated picked Sasha Cohen (USA) for gold, Irina Slutskaya (Russia) for silver and Shizuka Arakawa (Japan) for bronze, so there are your favorites right there.

Hannah Teter was AWESOME in the half pipe. Just like White, she took her second run casually and just pulled off the tricks (and nice ones at that) she needed to clinch the medal. Our commentators called it her victory run.

And today was BRUTAL injury wise. We lost one of our skiers (Allison Forsyth) when she tore her ACL in her practice run, you had some crazy skiing/luge accidents (including the poor American girl getting herself concussed and sliding down the track unconscious and under her sled), and poor Dan Zhang nearly tore her groin (hell, she might have) when a figure skating spot went horribly wrong and she did the splits on the ice... yet she continued after an injury break and, along with her partner, still managed silver. Fantastic.

Bjørndalen keeps screwing up in biathlon. We get beat by the SWEDES in cross country sprint... Sure, we're racking up medals, but where the heck are the gold medals? Oh well, with Hanevold and Andresen in 2nd and 3rd in biathlon today, we have a good shot at getting a gold in the pursuit. Shame with Bjørndalen being a minute and a half behind, though.

That being said, and all national pride away: Congras Sven Fischer, you've been in the game for as long as I can remember, and you deserve the gold medal.

Pål Trulsen and the rest of the curlers beat Switzerland, 7-2. A nice little revenge after the US beat us yesterday.

So, what's with the headline here? Did I miss something? What pole?

HAHA! Too bad I didn´t see that. I guess I can watch a little during the break next week.

One gold so far and I hope that we´ll get several more.

SomerZ: One of our Canadian cross-country skiers broke her pole during the relay today, and a very nice Norwegian coach gave her a new one - and we ended up winning silver.

Sorry to all the Swedes by the way. Canada really didn't mean to run up the score against my university's (Concordia) goalie, Cecilia Andersson. The big news is that FINLAND is stunning the United States at the moment, 3-1... which, if that score holds, would mean a Canada-USA SEMI-FINAL as opposed to the usual final. And given how we're playing... might as well get the win over with.

Well, that reminds me: Back in 1994, at the Winter Olympics at Lillehammer, Mika Myllylä of Finalnd was not given a new pole by a Norwegian coach after he had broken his pole. This caused a national scandal because people felt it gave Norway a negative image in the world of cross-country skiing. People thought Myllylä should have been given a pole, regardless of his nationality, in the spirit of fair play and all. Comparisons were drawn to Norwegian Oddvar Brå, who won a famous World Championship in 1982 after breaking a pole. The rhetorical question "what if Brå had never been given a pole?" was asked, and the result of the entire uproar was that the rules for who could and could not be given poles were changed.

I'm guessing that scandal might be one of the reasons why Norwegian coaches now so gladly hand out poles to everyone and anyone they see breaking one. They don't want to mess up again.

Then again, Myllylä was involved in that big Finnish cross-country skiing team doping scandal back in 2001, so maybe it was just and fair that he never got a pole.

Wait a minute, hang on... Finnish DOPING scandal? That sounds absolutely hilarious.

Oh, and Finland ended up losing to the US 7-3. They woke up.

Well, yeah. Basically, it turned out, nearly all the top level Finish cross country skiers had been eating a little more than just plain cereal for breakfast for many years.

Funny thing, when they were found out, in stead of apoplogizing and such, they basically started pointing fingers everywhere, accusing anyone and everyone, even when there were nothing that would indicate that those people had been involved in anything.

I lost the respect I had for Finnish sports because of that.

I hope it wasn't the "well, everyone else is doing it and you're not picking on them" mentality.

Canada's up to 4 medals with a bronze today in speed skating. But we really need to pick up the pace on that overall count...

Italian Women's hockey team managed to score 1 goal during the prelims
Top Russian for Women's Biathlon was nailed for doping.

I'm looking for a U.S. vs. Canada show down

and uh...was the U.S. the only country with all the spills that one day? (minus the Chinese in pairs figure staking)

I caught the end of the USA-Latvia game. Ended in a 3-3 tie, because Urbe (sp?) was amazing at the end there.

The Norwegian efforts at the Olympics are now officially a disgrace. Only 1 gold after 6 days, and now, the best Norwegian comes in at 17th on 15km classical cross country skiing, an event where we traditionally should be the best! Gah, this is so embarrasing.

Is someone watching the USA-Sweden game? It´s pretty even because they play sudden death now.

I think I´ll tease you guys if sweden wins.

HAHA! Sweden won. But why did US get to shoot again? They said that our goalie moved too early.

They think that Canada will win here but both Canada and Finland are good teams so it´ll be a tough game.

I hope for Canada to win so we can beat them too.

...You're leading in medal count at least, SomerZ. And Canada's tied for 2nd after 7 medals in the last 2 days, including gold/silver in the men's skeleton today.

Team USA got OWNED. You live by the shootout (last year beating Canada for the world title), you die by the shootout. On the flip side, I hope you Swedes will be happy with silver because that's the best you're going to do on Monday against us.

On women's Snowboardcross US Lindsay Jacobellis had a very commanding lead down the straightaway near the end and goes off the ramp and does a method air then falls once she hits the ground and gets silver. I was so mad.
