This one stood out as being alright, $370 and already much better than my current one.

I was just curious if anyone could find any better ones for within the same range (300-450), but if no one has any real gripes with this system I'll probably request my mother purchase it.

(I would myself, but she holds my bank account despite myself being nearly 18 now)

That is a pretty good system--if you can tack on a video card to that machine (not use integ video), then you are all set.

Seems alright, although consider if you could get it with extra memory or if you could add it afterwards. 512 mb is alright, but 1 gb is even better... if there's any area you should spend the spare change on, it's the memory.

I beg to differ. You really only need that much RAM if you're playing the latest, greatest games or working with large files. For the average user, especially one on a budget, 256MB is still perfectly fine. Heck, my main computer only has 192MB, and the last time the page file was accessed was in January.

Anyway!

Uh oh.

May I suggest this one instead? Awesome CPU, not-so-crappy onboard video (though you should still get a separate card), and still within your price range. Tasty!

The 449 system looks pretty good.

Its got the RAM, the harddrive size, the processor (compared to the celeron in the other unit), and a decent graphics card.

Just slap Windows XP Pro on it and your set.

All depends what you do. I use Azureus a lot, which can eat up 350MB itself, and lololol (especially with often 8+ tabs) isn't too RAM-friendly either. My system runs at a snail's pace with the 256MB it has now; I'm planning to upgrade to 1GB (and 400 rather than 333mhz sticks) sometime soon.

The speed of your RAM and hard drive are surprisingly significant factors, though.
