I'm almost 18, and have a few patches od stubble, but it never really escalates anymore than that. Does anyone have any tips on the promotion of facial hair? My dad says to shave every day, whether or not its needed. Any other ideas, guys?

Cut your pubes and glue it in your face. No, really, do what you're father said.

Well, there's probably a lot of truth to that advice.

I know that with girls and shaving your legs; before you start your leg hair is soft and light stuff; and after you start shaving it it darkens and becomes stiffer (and then you really NEED to shave). It never gets to the point of men's facial stubble (thank gawd) but it certainly gets darker and thicker than it would be if you'd never shaved it.

I'd assume the same happens with your face.

I support this. Though I think electrolysis would be a better option. For everyone.

I could be wrong here, but i could swear i read somewhere that the "shave it and it will grow back thicker" theory was a myth, that it only appears thicker because its all one length now.
Time is probably all you need. When i was 18 i could at best grow a good goatee but nothing else would come in thick enough to be worth it. A few years later i can grow a full beard in a matter of a few days. Sounded cool when i was younger, but now i'm sick and tired of having to shave all the damn time, its a pain!

Whether it is actually thicker or not I'm not sure; but it certainly looks that way. But then; before I shaved my legs; the hair on there was very fine, and it was all bleached from the sun and such. Now it's less fine (although mine's still pretty fine) and darker.

So are you regretting you started to shave your legs in the first place?

Yeah, I hafta shave my legs like every other day now. It's a pain in the arse. The growing back thicker thing is real, at least for me.

And personally, a little stubble can be sexy sometimes.. but it depends on the face. If it's patchy, keep shaving it.. it'll get thicker.

Nah, it's nice when it's all smooth.

I just wish waxing were less painful -- it takes longer to grow back, and it grows back finer eventually if you do that enough. I'm just too wussy to do it enough.

Yeah smoothness is really good. But then again it's a pain to shave all the time. Makes me wish we could be anime chicks since they don't have to worry about this.

The idea that shaving causes hair to grow in thicker and darker is indeed a myth. Hair is merely a fiber made out of protein. Nothing you do to the hair above the surface of your skin will affect how the follicles below the skin surface produce hair in the future. Now, puberty oftentimes does cause body hair to thicken and darken. Since many people start shaving at around this time, they commonly associate the change in their body hair with shaving, but this is merely coincidental.

Facial hair growth is mainly dependent on genetics and hormones. Assuming that you aren't deficient in testosterone, all you can really do is wait and hope you start producing more hair later on. Some guys take a while to reach their full hair growth potential. When Rando was a college freshman, he tried to grow a beard. It literally took him all semester to produce stubble. Three years later, when we started dating, he generally shaved every week or so. Now, at 27, he would have to shave at least once a day to stay perfectly smooth.

Pray to a darker power.

Blood for the blood god!

Some sort of animal sacrifice will help you. God knows this whole idea of having facial hair has negatively impacted me.

In my dad's example, he didn't have to shave his face until he was 24. My uncles had to start shaving at 12/14 and 15 respectively. I've had to start shaving two years ago. It was basically a bi-monthly thing at 16. Then it got progressively got more annyoing. I shave every three days now. Just wait. The litmus test is whether you can grow a moustache in a week. Then you may grow a beard.

A few options you could try... though I'm not entirely sure.

1.) Get some testosterone

2.) Put some rogaine where desired

3.) Scrub your face more often

This might sound obvious, but:

STOP SHAVING AT ALL.

Seriously.

It might take weeks, but it will grow. Some people's facial hair just doesn't come in that fast or thick. My beard (It's just around the jawline, I shave the rest and I keep the beard short) took at least two months to cultivate... you have to go through a "what the fuck is that?" phase when it's noticable growth, but not looking good or refined enough to be deliberate. Such is life.

Also, some people just can't grow good facial hair. You should try once though... just stop shaving at all and see what happens.

Well, honestly, it depends on the face. Seriously.

Some guys I have seen look great with, like, stubble everywhere, and others look good with a full beard, and others look bad with facial hair, period.

I'm still tryin' to figure out which I look best with. People keep telling me that my little goatee (only on the chin, anyway) looks good, but...

Well, they're all guys. And my mom. Not girls which I might try to court who could actually tell me what looks more attractive.

I think I'll shave everything off this weekend and see what people say. But I feel so weird with no facial hair.
