As of late... every once in a while, my computer will make this loud, weird beeping sound. Just one beep, lasts maybe 2 seconds, out of nowhere. It just happened now, while browsing the board aimlessly. I don't do anything to cause it... it just beeps.
I have sound off, so it's not something embedded in a page. Anyone know what it might be? It happens randomly, and I'm mildly worried about what it is. I don't think that's normal, exactly. ![]() |

Is the beep coming out of your main speakers or is it coming out of the computer's internal speaker?

I've got no idea. The volume is on mute almost always, so... I imagine the internal speakers? Is there a way I can tell easily? Cuz.. it's not like it goes on forever allowing me to find out where it's coming from exactly.

If your volume's on mute and your speakers are muted as well, then it's your PC's internal speaker. ![]() |

sounds like the CPU is overheating? The only time the computer beep is when there is no video, no memory, or when something happens during boot up. But while the operating system is running, then my guess is your computer is telling you the CPU is getting a little too hot...

Sounds like warnings from your motherboard. Check in the mobo book and in the bios to see if you have the good settings or if it is not over heating.

Weīve heard beepings from one of our computer at home too but that was on a very hot day. Yes, it was on its way overheating but we turned it off. One of the fans
had stopped working. You know that you can set at what temperature you want it to start beeping, right? I donīt remember how, though. Edit: Our computer beeped like a fucking firetruck. (edited by Ran-chan on 02-03-06 03:58 AM) |

That happens on my laptop sometimes when it's been turned on for hours. So I guess it's overheating.
It's just usually a warning, since most computers as I understand turns themself off if the overheating really turns to the extremes. |

I think our computer did that but Iīm not sure.
Weīve the warning sound set at 60-65 degrees celsius, I think. |

Beeping also happens if you're fast enough to overload the input buffer; it'll beep for about .25 of a second to say "stop fucking doing things and let me catch up".
Usually only happens when you're using all of your CPU loading something (e.g. starting a game), though I've also had it happen when just scrolling with the mouse wheel. |

..Oh that makes sense.
Considering it is ALWAYS hot here, and my house has no air, and the house is closed up all day... when I get home and turn the comp on it's already warmed up. Huh. Well I'll have to keep my window open or something. Thanks Neo, and everyone else. ![]() |

My guess is that your CPU fan is failing. Many new motherboards will beep when the fan's speed drops below a certain threshhold (mine does at ~1000RPM); if it continues for too long, the board will shut down to prevent damage to the CPU.
Most motherboards have a fan speed display in the BIOS (or, if you're not comfortable entering the BIOS, the manufacturer will often have a Windows utility or two on their website that does the same thing); I would watch that and see if it fluctuates a lot. A properly working fan should maintain a fairly constant speed. Also, open the computer's case and listen for any odd noises (rattling, buzzing, whining). |

Download SiSoftware Sandra. You can keep track of fan speeds and temperatures and much more with it. (edited by Ran-chan on 02-04-06 01:37 PM) |

And, of course, make sure no PROGRAMS you use are triggering it normally. If the beep sounds normal, then there's a good chance something or other could trigger it.
But, yeah, overheating can kill any part of your computer if it gets to an extreme. So be careful; if a fan is making weird noises, then either it's got a bad speed controller or is dying. Dead fans = possibly dead computer if not addressed soon enough. |
