This is likely a question for somebody clever like Rydain, but I thought I'd ask generally as well....

How in the sweet hell do you lose weight / body fat?

I've been good all year, steadily increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables in my diet, eating less meat and more fish, eating nearly no processed foods, exercising daily, drinking lots of water... hell, I've even cut out chocolate (and I'm a chocaholic...). I haven't been sneaking myself sweets or fatty food either.

Despite being really, REALLY good all year, I've lost maybe half a kilo of weight (1.1 lbs)

I make sure to have breakfast, lunch and dinner, I make sure to get enough sleep... I just can't seem to lose any damned weight.

It's been a month now of being really, really good... it's starting to feel like a waste of time though. At last check, I'm 74.2kg (163.24 lbs), and 35% bodyfat. At the beginning of the year, I was 75kg (no idea of bodyfat percentage).

So, is there some trick to it I'm missing?

There are two body types. Ones that keep fat and easily build muscle and ones that don't keep fat and don't easily build muscle. And there are the inbetweenies. I have the opposite problem you do: I can eat and eat and eat and eat and not gain ANY weight at all, but on the same token, I CAN'T GAIN MUSCLE TO SAVE MY LIFE. I worked out for a year and pretty much nothing. My advice: Fighting your body type sucks. Don't even bother. It's a losing battle.

! A compliment! I'm all warm and fuzzy now. Thanks. At any rate...

Bodyfat loss boils down to eating fewer calories than you burn. It sounds like you've been cleaning up your diet, which is great...but if you're trying to lose bodyfat, you have to be sure that you're eating below your maintenance caloric intake. It's very well possible that you're eating at maintenance level although you're staying away from empty calories. Many people need to keep a food diary and count calories to drop their bodyfat below a certain point. This sounds much more sucktacular than it is. Once you get used to keeping track of portion sizes and caloric content of food, it starts to become second nature.

I would suggest taking a look at the "eating" section on Krista's weightlifting site. It gives suggestions of how many calories to consume and has some nifty recipes as well. I'm fond of the cottage cheese pancakes myself. If you don't already include some sort of weight training in your exercise routine, I highly recommend adding it. Weight training jacks up your metabolism and provides a sense of accomplishment to help encourage you along the way. Just don't get freaked out if you start working with weights and see the scale jump up and notice some tightness in your clothes. To make a long story short, that's water retention in your muscles, and it's temporary. It's common when starting a new routine or switching gears. I recently experienced it myself when going back to heavy lifting after having taken it easy for a while.

Well, I´m quite the same. I eat much crap food but almost no vegetables and I still don´t gain weight. I´ll start exercising when I´m done with school and see if it makes any difference.

I have too little bodyfat, I think. 5'5" and 110lbs. What does that say?

Ran-chan and Nebetsu...it sounds like you guys are ectomorphs. That is, you have a skinny build and a very high metabolism. It's possible for ectos to gain muscle mass. You have to lift weights and consume an absolutely ridiculous amount of calories (because weight gain requires you to eat more than you burn off), but it is possible. Of course, you need to be sure you're getting enough protein so you'll put on muscle. The recommended intake I use is 1 gram per pound of lean body mass. Since it sounds like you guys are pretty lean already...1 gram per pound of body weight should be fine.

For the past year and a half I've stayed the same weight. I haven't lost any and I haven't gained any. I swear, its the strangest thing, what could be the cause of that? I don't work out that much, but I will play some good rounds on DDR. I used to walk a lot, but stoped when I started to play DDR more, which was about a year ago. I drink a lot of water (and I mean a lot) and I still eat fast food, as well as fruits and cereal like Special K.

Give some to me... j/k
Seriously, if a metabolism was an object, I'd be VERY happy give you most of mine. I hate it.

There are numerous suggestions I could give...

-Eat more greens
-Consume sugar substitutes or use Splenda

-Try running a little bit every day
--Overworking yourself can cause problems
--Time yourself and try to run a few seconds faster each time

-Drink more water than any other beverage

-Exercise 3 to 5 times a week

-Try a more acidic diet to raise your metabolism

What are you doing to exercise?

Ive got this friend....cutest face ever but she's pretty fat. I once said we could maybe work out together or something, to which she replied something along the lines of "No, thats embarrassing. I plan on taking a class with other fat girls in sweats."

The rest of us pretty much collectively slapped her for that one.

News flash: If the program is full of fat people....IT DOESNT WORK. If it worked, it would be full of thin people. I refuse to believe that, were it truely effective, not ONE person who saw results wouldnt think to themselves "Hey! This really worked! I should keep doing it!" and stay on.

The trick to exercise is doing stuff you never see fat people do.

I personally prefer martial arts, because its way fun, rewarding, builds lots of confidence, and makes you less scared when you walk out to the car by yourself at night. Do some research, though. Some disceplines are more active than others (Wushu as opposed to, say...Judo or Akido) and some are more useful for actual combat than others (Jeet Kun Do as opposed to Wushu.) And some are just plain bad (beware of tai chi classes full of old people!)

I've got another friend. She swims, and SWEARS by it. Now...if you dont have a pool, this can be both inconveniant and expensive, depending on your situation. However, I myself can vouch for her, saying that she swears by it with good reason. The girl gets RESULTS. Something like fifty or a hundred laps a day or something in the summertime (her pool is outdoors.) Sounds like a lot, but she says it only takes an hour or so once you get good at it. And, again....great results.

You could get REALLY good at DDR and play all the hard songs for an hour a day =D Tear your feets up though XD

Or you could play a sport. I like volleyball, myself, though that might not be active enough, and hard to find a partner enough people. Try something like squash or tennis maybe?

Anyway, Im rambling. In closing, I just want to say that...really? Its ok to be big. The key is being HEALTHY. Thats whats attractive. Big people can be really hot if theyre healthy. The issue comes about because being FAT is unhealthy, and thats unattractive. So...yeah. *nods* Thats enough outta me.

I can understand where your friend is coming from though and why she doesn't want to be around thin people when working out. Its more of a self consciousness and mental issue. I mean, I'm not fat but I'm not super thin either and the last thing I want to do is join a program with a bunch of thin people. Makes me feel highly uncomfortable and I think the same goes for your friend. If you still want her to go, I would put pressure on her, yet encourage or better yet, create a program of your own and maybe she'll join along with you. At least that way, she isn't around people that she doesn't know.

Yeah I know. But you know what? You just gotta do it, sometimes. Besides, after you finally get over yourself and get into something decent, then three months later you get to turn around and be like "BAM! SEXY!"

Unfortunatly she's really busy right now and I live four hours away and dont drive yet. Im pondering moving trying to move down there maybe. If I do I'm considering how she feels about taking a martial art with me. It would be really fun I think.

The surefire way to lose body fat is to not consume carbohydrates because your body prefers to use carbohydrates over fat. Once carbohydrates are at a low level, your body will begin to use fat more.

Eating fruits and company is good, but you are consuming glucose, which means your body is going to be using glucose over your body fat. However, if your body fat is down to like 5%, there isn't anything you can do. There are marathon runners, in the course of a marathon will go from 5% body fat down to 4.5% body fat...not a dramatic change

That's me also. I've been seriously underweight my whole life, despite being on a 4000 to 5000 calorie diet. For a long time I've been 5'11", 130 lbs. If I didn't eat massive amounts of everything, my weight would drop, sometimes dramatically - I've been down to 95 pounds before, just by losing focus and starting to live without paying attention to my weight. I have to eat so many colaries that I need to pay attention to other things to make sure I'm not getting vitamin toxicity or too much sodium and sugar. Gaining muscle is an impossibility.

I can guarantee you my favorite way to lose weight would be to get a bodybag and just punch it nonstop for about an hour straight a day. That'd take care of a lot of my aggression and energy problems.

Alternatively, I do on occasion jog. And I also fence, which can get very intensive as a physical and mental workout. The stretches we are required to do get the fencers into an almost zen-like state, where slow, thorough motions that fully stretch and work the muscles take point over repetition. The point is to become lean, not to build muscle.

And then there's DDR... But I don't know if that's exercise or not, come to think of it. It doesn't seem to work as well as eating right does. That's all I really do, just eat decent food and no junk (well, maybe a pizza pocket every now and then or some donuts if I'm feeling lucky).

Wait.

It's a game.

Why does anyone think they can lose asdf weight from playing DDR all the time? Hiryuu can't, DD can't, I can't, Ziff can't, we're like the wtf DDR players of the board (if not the best at least the most vocal about it) and we're also the ones with the least amount of overall weight loss. I lost 40 pounds two summers ago because of ANOREXIA. Like, going for days at a time without eating. Now my excess skin hangs off my bones like a leather jacket and I'll have to wait about four years for it all to suck itself back in through general use. Assuming, of course, I don't decide to fatten myself up again. Which I won't. Because I'm hungry now and I don't eat because I have nowhere to go to eat and there's no food in my dorm. And since I'll be at college for the next four years, I'm guessing food is gonna lose priority over education and stuff.

DDR might work to a certain extent, but if you're serious about it you need to work your whole body WHILE maintaining a diet.

I need to lose weight, and change my diet. Thing is that I feel rather lazy when it comes to food, so sometimes I just go order a pizza becuse I feel so damn... tired. Meh, I need to get that training bicycle at home over here. (It's freezing cold around here, and my parents dosen't use it).

Meh, you know what? For a week from now on, i'm going to cook all the food myself. Becuse I said so.

I actually think Hiryuu DID lose some weight playing DDR. Not a huge amount but still notable.

Of course, you'd have to probably supplement DDR with some other activity like Ailure suggested. Either diet-wise or exercise-wise.

DDR can be a hell of a cardiovascular workout if you do songs that get your heart rate up. You have to do songs that are challenging for you at your current level of fitness, and you have to keep at it long enough to get results. Comfortably toodling along might be fun, and it's better than sitting on the couch doing absolutely nothing, but if you aren't giving your body any work that it has to adapt to, you won't be increasing your metabolism to any significant degree. It's like the difference between a leisurely walk and a sustained jog. In both cases, you're locomoting yourself using your feet, but unless you're quite out of shape, the leisurely walk isn't going to do much for you fitness-wise. Also, if DDR is your main form of exercise, you need to play it at that challenging level on a regular basis - at least 2-3 times a week or so. I'd suggest shooting for 30-60 minutes of playing. The time to play depends on the intensity of the workout. If you're consistently busting your ass on difficult songs that leave you gasping for breath, you can get away with a shorter workout. If you're working at a more moderate intensity, you'll have to go longer to get much out of it. Again, as a comparison to walking and running...someone can comfortably walk at a brisk pace for an hour, but a workout consisting of sprints would wear them out much more quickly. (For the record, sprint workouts are incredibly efficient at helping you burn bodyfat...but be wary of this sort of training until you're already pretty physically fit. And don't do anything that gives you joint pain or any other bad sort of owie. It's not worth it, umkay?)

Quite a few people - including one of my friends - have lost significant amounts of bodyfat playing DDR because they played consistently and kept pushing themselves to learn to play at higher and higher levels. When I first got DDR, it didn't give me much of a workout until I could do at least 5-foot songs (and even then, only a very few - like Afronova - challenged me, and when those became easy, I of course had to keep moving up).

That might explain why I get hungry so often. If I eat breakfast at 7:20am, I get hungry at 10:30-10:45am.

And I eat LOTS of soured milk during breakfast. It almost flow over the edge of the plate.
