First, the question:

Is smoking sexy?

Well that depends. You guys are all hung up on OMG LUNG CANCER and OMG BAD BREATH and OMG ASHY SMELL and OMG TEETH. Well....yeah. But the question isnt "Is lung cancer sexy?" The question, as I interpret it, is "Can smoking be sexy?" or, more clearly "Can "smoking" (be it the act of smoking or the presence of a cigarette, pipe, cigar, or related ect) directly increase the sexyness, sensuality, ect of a person, scene, situation, or picture?"

At this point I wish to pause a moment to inform you all that no, I dont smoke. I think its a disgusting habit and anybody I had any interest in dating would have to either be a in the process of quitting, willing to quit *NOW* or a very very very very very very light smoker. Let us continue.

Well that depends on how you define sexy. Does cool count? In the first Charlie's Angels movie, the creepy thin man smoked, and he was pretty fucking badass about it. Would I call it sexy? Not really.

But thats not to say it isnt possible. Cool isnt our only alternative. Ive seen pictures and scenes in movies where it certainly DID add a little something. Would I call it sexy or sensual? ...no, not really. But I have seen it add a certian casual flair, or a certain mysterious allure. A certian something that does, in fact, result in me being more attracted, sexually or otherwise, to either the individual or situation.

Yes, I think its disgusting and horribly unhealthy. And ice cream makes people fat. What do you people want from me?

This is called objective reasoning.

Now that THAT'S out of the way, lets deal with some of this negativity.

First of all, the bashing. Good or bad?

You know what people? Leave people the fuck alone. I dont slam you and get up in your face about laying off the bonbons because youre larger than the average planet devouring space horror, lay off the smokers a little bit. If theyre outside and near you...fuck it. Move. Theyre well within their rights to do what they want to do, its not your place to "censor" them (for lack of a better term.) If you cannot get away *AND* have the "right of way" so to speak (youre indoors and you were there first, youre in a non smoking area ect,) then ask them politely to stop, cause its bugging you. If theyre dicks about it, I'll give you my phone number. Call me and I'll come bust some heads.

This is called ettiquitte and protocol.

On the other hand....they do, in a way, have it coming. Smokers getting treated like dirt while theyre actively smoking is just the way things work. If they dont like it, they should quit, because its not really their place to complain about it. Its like me bitching at the guy at the burger place when he gets my order wrong. A: He got my order wrong. B: Even if it WASNT his fault...he's a fucking burger place guy. I dont feel at all bad for treating him like garbage because THATS HIS FUCKING JOB. It is in his job description to deal with irate and loudmouthed customers, thats why the hell they hire you. If you dont like it, quit, because you sure as hell knew it came with the territory when you took the job, and if you didnt youre an idiot and deserve to be scraped off my boot anyway. Its like a movie star getting mad because fans keep mobbing him for autographs. Hey smokers! You *KNEW* people were going to treat you like dirt the very first time you lit up! It is a part of your job description! If you dont like it....quit!

This is called pattern recognition and logic.

I guess thats enough for now. Lets see what happens!

I think you guys are forgetting that everyone has their flaws. Everyone has their vices. For some it's smoking, for some it's food, for some it's sex.. etc.

If you're truly someone's friend or you truly care about them.. you'll see through them smoking a cigarette everyone once in a while.

I can't tell you how many friends I lost when I started smoking pot occaisionally. It just goes to show you who really really cares about you.. and who doesn't. I saw friends I used to know at a bowling alley yesterday and they said hi from a distance, and played it off like they didn't even know me. Like "I don't know that degenerate". And I'm talking people I've known for YEARS.

But this isn't about pot, it's about whether smoking is sexy or not.

I'm pretty much indifferent to it. Smoking can show a wild side though... and that's kinda sexy.

i used to smoke almost half a pack everyday... and then i just stopped. no "cutting down" no "oh man i really need a cigarette"... i just stopped. mainly because of my girlfriend but.... still.

and im sure every single smoker out there, unless they're still preteens or something, knows that smoking does them harm... obviously there's a reason they're still smoking, whether it be to "look cool" (which is an extremely stupid reason to smoke), because they're addicted or because it actually relaxes them or whatever... just let them be. they know they stink, they know their breath smells and they know it'll cause cancer... you dont have to keep repeating it in their face to try to make it look like they're idiots or something... k thats all byebye

I feel as though I should rephrase myself; I won't somke to look cool or bad-ass. When I'm with all my other friends who smoke like a smokestack, I'll just light up along with them, mainly because second-hand smoke is more dangerous that first hand (or so I've heard). That's all.

Clockworkz - You seriously think lighting up a whole new cigarrette is going to make the conditions better on you? *LOL*

I'm sure i came off harsh in my last post, but it is how i feel. The question was'nt "would you be friends with someone who smoked?", because i would as long as they dont do it in my home (thats an act of war), and they have to accept the fact that i will be physically removing myself from their company whenever they light up, for the duration of the smoke hanging in the air. But when it comes to a girlfriend, someone i'll be in close physical contact with, i will not tolerate it at all. What if i got her pregnant and her smoking hurt our baby? The stuff can be extremely addicting, i've actually known people who would not quit ever after getting smokers lung and being told to quite by doctors, and mothers who just could'nt quite ever when pregnant. There is very little more repulsive to me than an attractive girl with a cigarrette, so its my right and my choice to have no romantic ties with a smoker. I'm far less repulsed by pot. I dont do it, but the odor of it is not repulsive and lingering like a cigarette.

It depends on the cigarette. Various brands, particularly European and Asian ones, have lovely scents. North American brands (along with Chinese) are notorious for their poor quality and heinous smell.

Kailieann: To put this in a different perspective, consider alcohol.
Even if you don't like the term 'addicted', if someone were to consistantly drink five beers a day, every day, you would be extremely stupid if you thought they didn't have at least somewhat of a problem with alcohol.

Nicotine is far more addictive than alcohol, and cigarettes are far more harmful than beer.

Five cigarettes a day is addicted.
Even if you don't like the term 'addicted', one cigarette a day is still a problem.

What do you care if they're addicted? Unless someone close to you starts smoking and you're worried they'll develop cancer, why should you care if some random person you pass in the street is a smoker? Or an alcoholic for that matter (unless they're violent drunks or drive while inebriated or something else like that which is dangerous to other people). Really, having an opinion is one thing, forcing your own way of life on everyone else is another.

This is a good time to note that the only reason that smoking became commonplace in America is the same reason that tattooing became popular; white people picked it up off another culture, then bastardized it for their own purposes. Smoking was taken from the indigeneous peoples of what we now call America, and tattoos were taken from Africa. The bastardization part comes in that both smoking and tattooing were ceremonious things, involved in sacred rites and rituals, but they were then taken and made into a casual everyday thing which holds no special meaning. Dunno why I felt the need to mention that, I've got nothing against white people or anything, just thought it was interesting.

SuperKawaiiNeko: Its like a movie star getting mad because fans keep mobbing him for autographs.

"Boo-hoo, I make ninety-six billion dollars a year and have servants waiting to address my every beck and call, but I don't have eight minutes to spare to say hi to a crowd of people who adore me because I'll be late for my all-day spa treatment." Not to defend the papparazi of course - they're human leeches, like lawyers and marine biologists - just agreeing with the point; if you start doing something which is unnecessary to your livelihood and you know that what you're about to do is going to garner specific responses or cause specific events around you that you might not like, then you have to deal with it, that's your responsibility. And I do believe that responsibility is at the core of this issue. The smokers say, "Waaah, the non-smokers are opressing my freedom." The non-smokers say, "Waaah, the smokers have bad teeth and are stinky." Always blaming it on "the other guy," that's what our society has reduced to, and unlike fine sauces, our reduction doesn't intensify our goodness, it merely degenerates our quality as a whole.

Jomb: Clockworkz - You seriously think lighting up a whole new cigarrette is going to make the conditions better on you?

I laughed at that too, for some reason. "Ahh crap, I'm caught in the rain. Here, lemme jump in this pool of water."

That's interesting. Got any links to product websites? I'm curious.

I can honestly say that I ain't smokin no mo.

I quit smoking the same day I got terminated from my old job. I had about eight looses in the pack with a lighter, I just chucked them in the trash on my way home. Right now I'm going through a withdrawl, when I was shaving my head (I ain't paying $20 for a haircut, lol) and taking a shower I felt the cigarette smell coming out of my skin, freaky is hell.

Honestly, it's not you, so why should you be worried about what someone else is doing to their own bodies?! I'm allergic and I have asthma, I don't care if the people that I know smoke, and they respect that I don't and that they can't smoke that close to me.

I mean, come on, many areas (resturants, clubs and so on) won't let people smoke anymore, so its not like its in your face anymore, unlike before. Why can't people just let others be. Worry about yourself and your loved ones, you know. This is just a message board that asked a simple question about people smoking and if it is sexy or not and not if they like killing themselves or whatever.

Really, smoking isn't the only thing killing us, you know.

Knock off the crap, get back on topic, leave the "cigs kill" part out of it, or this topic is done. If you wanna talk about the effects of smoking, take it up in debate.

Interjection

Fact: Nicotine is a stimulant
THEREFORE: If smoking calms you down, you are addicted.

Just FYI

(Yay, thread's calming down! )

Well, the same thing could be said for caffeine. I can think of people on this board who... well... take in a fair amount of coffee or sodas each day. :\ Then again, soda never calms me down or anything. It just tastes so yummy.

I just thought it was quite...uh, immature (Dunno if thatīs the word for it) to bicker about smoking.

Some smoke and some donīt. It doesnīt really kill you instantly, if at all. And itīs not really dangerous in small doses.

That's true, but I'm the same way with it. It doesn't kill me to go a day with no coffee/soda, and it doesn't make me feel any different if I go nuts and have 5 of each. It's just... so tasty.

Caffeine != nicotine in terms of addiction.

The comparison is moot.

Also, alcohol is a depressant, but be damned those guys go nuts. Pot is a stimulant, but you get all lazy like.

Nicotine has a calming effect because of the chemical changes it causes in your brain Occassionally before exams Ziff needs a ciggy. And I'll say something kids. I don't smoke. I have a cigarette once every 4 months.
