I had to train some other Pokemon to take out Brock and Misty (Brock was really hard, I had to get a Butterfree with Sleep Powder and brute force him with Ember ), but overall, I think Charmander is very strong (despite the major flaw in Charizard's Flying/Fire type) and useful much later on in the game I later traded for an Ivysaur from a friend and fell in love with it after second generation breeding came in.

I think I started with Charmander the very first time I played a pokémon game but I´m not sure.

Brock got pretty hard since I chose a fire pokemon but I managed to defeat him with Charmander in FR.

Bulbasaur is extremely usefulmin the beginning since Brock's pokémon are Rock/Ground and Misty's are water.

Charizard is my overall favoriteout of those since he seems to be the most powerful out of those.

Well in Fire Red, it is significantly easier because Charmander learns Metal Claw at level 13, a steel move, which is super effective to rock types. And in any case, Misty becomes easier regardless of the the starter due to the introdution of Oddish/Bellsprout around route 5, and Pikachu in Viridian city. Its Brock you usualy have to worry about, and he's not much of a problem anymore

Ah, yes, I just sat here and wondered at what lvl Charmander learned Metal Claw.

Misty can be a problem too if you don´t use Grass Pokémon. Her Bubblebeam knocked my Pikachu out and I didn´t have any grass type with me.

I chose Charmander first, because well, Charmander was my favourite Pokémon (Together with Charmeleon and Charizard). On the following playthroughs I've always used Squirtle, because Squirtle was win.

In the remake, I think I did choose Charmander. Before that I only played the yellow version, where you start off with Pikachu and can get all of them. I think I had a preference for Bulbasaur so if there was someone who did stick around...

I was always a Bulbasaur user. Always. Then again, I liked all three of the starters.

Anyway, my preference for all of the series...

Bulbasaur > Squirtle = Charmander

Cyndaquil > Chikorita > > > > Totodile

Mudkip > Treeko > > > > Torchic

Damn, I hated Totodile.

Squirtle. Can't go wrong with surf later on. I prefer Gengar as my main overall choice due to psychic.. But I'm a psychic/surf fan of some sort.

I'm a bublasaur fan--not sure why, I guess the show depicted him has someone with grit and not following the crowd. Plus, grass is strong against rock and water, so easy time early on...

Damn, I hated Totodile.

I would think that Chikorita was actualy a little bit more useless in this game. I know that besides Tangela, it was the only pure grass as of generation 2. But back then, Slash was still good, and Feraligatr for the time and physics of the game was actualy not too far behind blastoise overall. Now that the battle engine has been revamped almost entirely, Feraligatr is suddenly really, really useless in comparison to alot of the more solid water types out there. Meganium was never really that 'incredible', at least for me. Its special was okay--and its moveset was decent, but it was nothing that stood out to me, and Venusaur was much more appealing with the versatility of its moveset.

I also think all of the generation 3 starters are solid all around for their type. Torchick does suffer the major disadvantage of taking up half fighting, however, it is still an incredibly strong and useful Pokemon ._.;;

I thought Meganium was good in G/S/C but my overall favorite of those 3 were Typhlosion.

I have a thing for Fire types. Dunno why.

Meganium was average. It was pretty good but was never the greatest thing ever. And nowe, Sceptile is probably the stronger pure grass type, leaf blade is just awesome

I´d prefer Meganium over Sceptile anyday. Mainly because Sceptile doesn´t have much Sp Def or Def.

It´s fast but can´t take much. Leaf Blade is good, yes.

I think Torchic beats every other starting Pokemon out there, because he rules. As does Blaziken.

Last time I checked, Treecko was the best and most oft-used of the RSE starters. Besides, while Meganium may have better defense, Sceptile has more attack and is a hell of a lot faster than most Pokemon (same base speed as Alakazam). Plus, it gets Leaf Blade, the best damn grass move in the game. If you can get one with Hidden Power ice or fire type, and throw in Leech Seed and Substitute or something, you can dominate. Hell, it can stall as well as Venusaur if used correctly.

Yes!! I think Treecko is one of the most under-rated starters. The second place would go to the GS starters as a whole, due to them no longer being very good...but! Typhlosion is still a solid Fire Type...if you can somehow get any actualy good moves on him (having to use Flame Wheel as a filler move in his 60's is unnacceptable )

But, but..yeah! I don't see half as many Treecko users as I see people with generic Marshstomps or Blazikens (and by generic I mean Flamethrower, Fireblast...the most predictable moveset), and it saddens me. Breeding is your friend! Bulbasaur and Treecko are two of the most amazing grass types in the game because of this little fact. Chain breed if you have to. In the long run, its worth all the effort. You get out what you put in. Put in alot and you have a great Pokemon Put in a little, and you have a mediocre Pokemon with predictable stats and an even more predictable movesets.

I started with Bulbasaur. I think I still have him in it. I chose him because... I had Red and chose the Pokemon who was weak against Charizard. He was good... could kill all of the Elite 4 without back up... or potions during battle, for that matter...

In Gold and Silver (both which I owned, not my brother) I started with Cyndaquill because of Typhlosion looked cool (I had logic, right?)

In Ruby and Sapphire, stuck with Mudkip to have all three elemental types of starters in all the games. Hehehe...

So yeah... there 'ya go.

Fire-types are overrated.

Squirtle, ftw!
