It's actually easier to PA some songs than others due to sync issues. Plus, a song based mainly on 8th note streams will be easier to PA than a song that has spaced out sequences since it's easier to keep timing if you constantly move your feet, rather than taking a break and continuing. This is why you might see experienced players move their feet to invisible steps to keep timing between gaps in streams (I personally use this technique all the time).

spez: yes, those were my first AAA's ever at the arcade.

Hi.

I hope the guy at my arcade organizes a DDR tournament sometime soon, I'd love to compete and do some real fun stuff. Not a freestyle tourney, mind you, a score tournament. I'm no good at freestyling at all.

And I think Telephone Operator is fun. It's a toughie for a seven. Not that difficult overall, but I've seen people who can do catas fail it. Maybe it's something else...

EDIT: Oh, right, I almost AA'd Heaven is a '57 last week. I think the final total was like, 52 greats. Good or bad?

I had noticed this, but didn't connect exactly why they were doing this at the time. Now it all makes sense (Though it still seems like a waste of energy to me ).

It depends what your standard for good or bad is. What do you usually get?

Anyways, my arcade got a down-grade. They got rid of the DDR Extreme, with all the unlocked songs, and Double and 2 Player for one credit, and they changed it to a 5th mix. I kind of enjoy 5th, but they could have at least gotten rid of the DDR Ex without the unlocked songs and the VERY dark screen.

Oh, and on a funny note, one of my friends is purposely having his birthday party at the arcade just to see me play DDR.

Random question tat may have been answered before: I'm presuming the timing for In the Groove is slightly more lenient than even the DDR console games?

My arcade went from a single Max 2 machine (strangely in an Extreme cabinet) to an actual Extreme then another slightly older DDR Extreme that looked imported and has a bad left side. They also got Beatmania but that's another story, and still too difficult to comprehend. I haven't AA'd anything at the arcade yet, but I've been able to on some of those 7-step trance songs on Max 2.

The impression I got of ITG was that it was just a lot like Stepmania. With the ridiculous difficulty levels and cool visual effects, the timing is probably not quite as strict. I played it on a home metal pad and was suprised at how long some of my combos were.

I believe that says it. Though I wish I were exaggerating...

EDIT: Oh, to actually add some content to this post and give you an idea of just how screwed up the timing is for ITG, I played HVAM on a DDR Machine that had its timing configured to be similar to ITG's. And I FC'd it. Now, if you're Hiryuu, you know I don't FC HVAM. It just doesn't happen. So yeah, ITG goes from "Oh, well, I just got off DDR, the songs that look around my difficulty level are pretty easy" to "Wow, this is ridiculously hard. I sure do wish I were playing DDR right now".

Long versions rule.

So, playing some DDRMAX on PS2, trying to AAA some easy songs (Yes, I'm aware the timing on the console games is more lenient), 1-3-footers or so. Frustrated at my inability to do it on any of those, I move to the 5-foot Take It to the Morning Light....and promptly AAA it.

Okay then.

So, questions for those better than me:
1. How often do even expert players AAA songs at any difficulty? I believe I saw the aforementioned guy-who-won-the-DDR-tourney-at-M4GFest (I should point out that the tournament ended up being held on metal pads using a copy of DDRMAX2 PS2; apparently the guy who was supposed to bring an actual DDREx machine flaked out at the last minute for one reason or another) AAA 3 songs; no one else had more than 1 from what I saw. Granting, these were on Heavy, but still, I imagine that there are many failures ("Failure" being "anything other than a AAA") for every successful AAA, home or arcade. Am I right?

2. What's the best way to work on PA? Should I be going back to Light/Standard and focusing on trying to AAA easy songs? Or just keep going with songs that are at about the limit of my abilities and hope it comes naturally as I get better at them?

Play songs with lots of streams and a steady beat. Going back to Light/Standard doesn't really help all that much.

For those who haven't already heard:

DDR Supernova features pretty much all the original Extreme 2 stuff. It features all the previous 10 footers, Paranoia -Respect-, Max.(period) is unconfirmed as of now, but there IS a new max: Fascination MaxX. This is reportedly a 10 that's hard enough to be an ITG-13 footer with speed changes from 100, to 200, to up to 400 bpm. Crazy stuff. There is slated to be over 300 songs with online capablities and a new vs battle mode.

See the prettyness of it all here

EE: The timing to AAA (much less AAAA if you have Stepmania with Marvelous timing on) is pretty much near perfection. You don't really have much of a range to screw up, but it doesn't necessarily mean you have to hit the arrows the MILLISECOND it hits the gauge to get a perfect either.

AAAing depends if you have the quickness to do so. I can say that DD and I can do it way moreso on a keyboard than we can on a pad...in fact we've gone against each other and AAA'd at the same time. There were sometimes that one would...but the person who only AA'd would beat out the AAA because of marvelous accuracy (we're talking 25 perfects versus 18 perfects/1 great). But still, it takes a LOT to do that...it especially helps if you've played the song a couple hundred times as well. You're not going to find many people can AAA a song right off the bat on Heavy. It's all a matter of practice.

I, myself, can't really do better than 6 greats on an 8-Heavy, really (though Air on Heavy I nearly AAA'd one time spinning twice in it...2 from). But if it came to keyboarding 8's are usually AAA'd no problem by me (or very close).

DD: They're putting Respect in? Shit...

I'm in love!! <3

Anyways, I try and make one AAA every time I go to the arcade. It's usually Sexy Planet Oni, but only cause my play count on that particular song is way over 500 times. (Only cause I always played it on the TRICK oni course)
My only other AAA's are Jam Jam Reggae Heavy, Sexy Planet Oni Double, and Cartoon Heroes and I do I do I do Standard.

The current songs I'm working on are:
Exotic Ethnic (5 Greats) of course I haven't gotten that close in a while.
R & P (6 Greats) also haven't gotten close, but I keep it under 20.
Freckles (4 Greats) I average six, but I got 4 last Sunday.

As for AAs, I get it on every song except PSMO and LOM.

and getting extra stage gives you the most BS Max song ever, rating in at about 2 minutes 5 seconds, worthy of a 13 foot ITG style, the bpm keeps changing from 400-200-100 with stops everywhere and over 600 steps!

....
.....

Fascination MaXX!!! - 100-200-400

This song is stupidly hard, nobody has passed it yet, only me and ricky have seen the ending because it was on fail end of song when we got in, we can say that the final run is at 400 bpm with jumps thrown in at random.

It's official. We are fucked...FaxX'd...whatever.

Look at the vids on BMS's main page. HOLY SHIT at the end.

Though the perfect window is reportedly that of a home version, sadly. However, there must be marvelous play enabled for the online play since a screenshot shown on the cabinet decals show "Marvelous" for a song, not a course. (Can't find the screen for that again, if I do I'll post it). There's also a home software version of this already registered, so we may see this in your house this fall .

I have no problem with the home timing.

Additionally, by "this", do you mean you think we'll be getting all many many songs included in this arcade release or what? That would be like "OMG i need a new pair of pants" good.

As far as Fascination MAXX goes, the second player's assessment at the end is one I agree completely with.

Let me just say that I know a few of you are really good at DDR. Not experts but really good.

I don't care HOW much training/practice you have, there's no way in hell any of you are EVER going to pass FaxX. Period. Hell, Hiryuu would probably have a hard time trying to pass it on keyboard.

I'll eventually pass it, just a matter of time. I can make a B or better on all the current 10s minus PSMO, but that's just lack of practice with it. Oh, and DDRSN has been officially announced today. Seems that it's going to be released in Japan also, so we know to keep the Japanese market happy, they're going to have to make this game kick ass.

If I had a pad file to go by via SM I could PROBABLY keyboard it. It doesn't seem as bad as something like Satan's Theme. That monster never deserved to be padded.

But still, that thing looks about a 12 or 13...not a 10. I dunno where they're basing their logic on that rating.

That's not really any news. I'm sure that's been done quite a few times over the past half-decade or more...just not to 753 schools (hay almost 573) all at once in a state-wide effort. I know of at least one college campus near me that has that and an IIDX at least...

It's not a secret that DDR is considered a sport...or...maybe it is.
