I don't have an offical name for this hack yet, but for now I'm going to call it "Commander Mario" It's going to be an SMB 1 hack that I hopefully will finish. It's going to be about a Soldier in a war against an enemy army and robots. Here's some screens:
And here's some of the sprites for it: (From left to right: Mario, Goomba, Green Koopa, Red Koopa) (edited by Dr. Mario on 01-14-06 04:10 AM) |

So are you, by any chance, going to remove the mushroom, make coins be bullets, and turn the flower into a gun? Because that would be really, really cool.

I'm going to use the Always Big patch that's out there, and yes the Fire Flower is going to be a gun. I would make the coins into bullets, but I'd have to be able to make some sort of ammunition system wich would probably be pretty difficult (understatement of the decade), I'm currently trying to figure out some stuff in S.M.B. remodeler right now, the program is in Japanese so figuring out what to do is pretty tough.

This looks very awesome, and I really dig the new font.
Please keep us updated, as SMB hacks of this caliber are about one in a million. Edit: Are the graphics ripped from something or are they original? It all goes so well together... (edited by PSlugworth on 01-14-06 09:40 AM) |

I think this is awesome, nice graphics! They blend well together.
You should post more action screenshots |

Very nice... Good idea using the small mario to create the soldier head, since you're using the Always Big patch.

You could simply make each coin be one bullet of ammunition, and have something that says only shoot a fireball when coins>0, and if so, subtract one coin. I'm sure someone else could do that right? Then again I hear the rom there is pretty tight.

Awesome! Reminds me Contra or something. Nice job with the graphics as well; it gives a feeling completely different from a Mario game. Hell, if the status bar wasn't there, you wouldn't even be able to tell, except perhaps from the trees. Keep up the good work.

I have the source code where Mario shoots straight fire in SMB1 but I can't find where he shoots through walls. I'll PM you the source if you want it. 4] Nice GFX. About the hack, it looks really good. The new backgrounds look interesting, and their style matches the Commander/Army theme. I can't wait for a demo for this. |

Here's the fortress tileset, seeing how I was going with the whole amazon jungle look I figured that the bad guys would probably hide out inside of amazon ruins, so I decided to go with more of a castle look. I haven't changed the lava yet, but I'm going to get to it as soon as I find some more space to work with for background stuff. As far as hand drawn/ripped goes, I ripped the solder sprites (Mario, Koopas) from Bionic Commando, and I ripped the tree tops from SMB 2 and modified them. Everything else was hand drawn. I made that jungle tileset one day when I was bored and I was really frustrated because I didn't have a game to use it for, then I realized that it was like a mix between Contra and Super Mario Bros. so I decided to use it for a SMB hack. Looks good, but if I may make a suggestion: I would change the palette to a sandy brown color, just to differentiate it a little more from the original SMB and give it a more earthy, ancient ruins feel.
Just an idea! Anyway, looks great -- keep it up! |

With the lava, since you've gotten rid of small mario, could you alter the tile arrangements to use his tiles and expand the lava?
If you have the space, it might be nice to have some sort of heiroglyphics in the background along with the torces, but I know space is limited... |

Thanks for saying "Sandy Brown" because it made me wonder why my pallete wasn't accurate at all, and I ralized that I was using the emulator default for a crappy emulator. I was thinking of making the fortress tileset brown myself, but I figured that it would look red like the jungle tileset does, but then I realized that I wasn't using BMF's .pal file. So yeah, here's a better shot of the fortress.
**Edit** Actually Imajin, I might do that. I figured out a problem I was having with using the title screen. It wasn't the title screen tiles at all. I was just replacing a solid tile apparently. So yeah, I'll probably do more stuff in the background now. **Edit 2** Updated the pic (edited by Dr. Mario on 01-14-06 06:24 PM) (edited by Dr. Mario on 01-14-06 06:59 PM) |

A Mechanized walking tank (That's also a hint as to what direction this game might be going. It might be from another existing video game franchise) |
