They're save data files. For the most part.

And this belongs in General Emulation, I'd say.

DAT can be almost anything. Kazaa uses them for incomplete downloads, MegaManX5 PC has it's movies (possibly music too - try Windows Media Player) disguised as such, etc.
I wouldn't delete any unless you know for sure what the file in question does.

A file name (*.DAT isn't enough) and possibly anything suspicious in a hex editor would be nice to know, too...

.DAT(a), like .BIN(ary), is just a general data file that could be anything. Deleting it shouldn't hurt anything, but unless you really need the space, just keep it.

Also what's the file's name?
