Everything bad in this game is greatly magnified in strength. The HP of the Bowser is the same as the last boss of Superstar Saga, and he's teamed up with a guy
Spoiler:
Baby Bowser
who has 1000 HP. It's insane.

But for now, ...never mind. I'm getting sick of this game already. Managing to kill one 'normal' enemy only to have it revived (and then, kill me) is not fun.

I'm beginning to hate the difficulty curve of this game. It's out of control.

That was pretty much what I thought of SS. We need a true SMRPG sequel.

Don't know if Square will make a sequal. If so, BRING GENO BACK.

I got the game Saturday and in one day, I get to the beginning of Gritsy Desert. Next day, I got to the beginning of Thwomp hills. Now, I'm near the end of Star Temple. I just can't beat the boss there.

I wouldn't mind that at all. But then, I don't know if squaretendo is as rocking as it used to be.

Super Mario RPG sucked. It just didn't feel Mario. It felt square. And not good square, like Chrono Trigger. Square like Final Fantasy everything.

I wouldn't go as far as "sucked", considering it started the whole Mario RPG thing. You are right in the way that it wasn't Mario - to me, it seemed too, well, realistic. But again, I wouldn't say it sucked.

And there was a true Mario RPG sequel - Paper Mario 1 & 2 (ok, maybe they're not sequels, but they were pretty damn sweet)

WTF? SMRPG rocked. By 'true' sequel I meant basically the same style. PM was great (haven't played PM2 ) but it didn't feel like a sequel; it wasn't the same at all.

It needn't be done by Square, if Nintendo can pull off something that feels the same.

Well if we're going to turn this into a debate...
  • The dialogue is awesome. Hilarious at times, but serious where it's needed.
  • Playing as Bowser, Peach, and two new characters is also awesome.
  • The two new characters are awesome as well.
  • The music is FREAKING SWEET, especially for SNES. Sound effects are good too. Really sets the mood. I listen to it all the time.
  • Not to mention the graphics.
  • The battle engine is great; just a simple turn-based system with no annoying 'features' like enemies being able to attack you while you're using the menus or attack 82 times in a row. Dodging attacks and timing your own is easy to do but doesn't make the game too easy, and it's possible to survive without doing so.
  • You don't have to spend a week leveling up after each boss.
  • Enemies aren't especially cheap and don't just keep using the same move over and over, unlike in most games. One-hit kill moves are actually rare and blockable.
  • Stats are realistic. You generally max out at about 400-500 HP and up to 99 MP (FP), and enemy attacks (assuming you aren't WAY stronger than them) do anywhere between 30 and 250 damage. The thing I hated most about Paper Mario was its stat system, where you only get up to 50 HP and each attack does between 2 and 35.
  • Level design is great, with large, detailed worlds, a lot of little secrets and side quests, and progressive difficulty is pulled off almost perfectly. Save points are right where you need them nearly all the time. The levels are also very interactive.
  • Being able to see enemies on the world map is just perfect. You can try to sneak by (especially good if you're weak), or go right out and fight. You don't waste time wandering around looking for enemies, you don't get annoying enemy-appears-every-3-steps cases, you can usually avoid getting killed on the way back to the Inn after a big boss battle, and it's much more realistic. Since enemies pop out unexpectedly in certain places or charge at you, and the map design forces you to fight some enemies, it retains most of the advantages of random battles.
  • The enemy characters, especially bosses, kick ass. Everything from dragons and generic huge monsters to killer cakes and looney kidnappers who look suspiciously like Wario.
  • Not piss-easy, but not HOLY SHIT hard either. With the right combination of weapons, armor, and accessories, you can get to where you just kick the shit out of most enemies (which is quite fun) but still have a tough time with the ones further ahead (especially bosses).

So yeah.

wtf

I agree with everything hyperhacker just said

Something is clearly wrong here

oh, one note:

Stats are realistic.

These are actually fairly similar scales... 30-250 of 500 is 6% - 50%, and 2-35 of 50 is 4% - 70%

so this point doesn't really make sense

Problem was it tended to be toward the high end of the scale. And I just didn't like the feel of only having 20HP and doing 2 damage at a time. With a higher scale, there's more flexibility, but with such small numbers it's generally either a little damage or a lot.

In Paper Mario it actually wasn't too bad, either. M&LSS was worse, because if you didn't dodge attacks (which was often FREAKING HARD) you were essentially fucked as you get hit 5 times taking 3 damage each with no way to prevent it and only ~30 HP.

Also those numbers are estimates.

MLSS battle were based on dodging a lot. I made that chart of the enemy attack values. They do get pretty strong. The final boss does about 43 damage (without defense, mind you). But still. Dang. When fighting Fawful, I took over 999 damage in a few turns.

Yeah... What pear said. Dodging was generally easy once you got the hang of any particular enemy's timing. Methinks you just suck at it.

Well that's just it, just as you start to get used to one enemy's timing, it does something completely different. Plus every enemy is different. I didn't care to keep playing long enough to get any good at it, it just pissed me off.

OK, I take that back. I actually had more problems with standard enemies (like Tashroombas and such) than I did with the final(-final(-final)) boss.

I just needed to gain a few levels (to 28) and it was piss-easy. Seriously, red shells (and Mix Flowers) kick. ass.

p.s.: the final(-final(-final(-final))) boss is the best boss ever.

The second-to-last boss's first form was way harder than any of the following ones. I didn't even have a proper badge equipped: I had the badge that makes bros. items free before you get hurt. (This is definitely the sexiest badge for killing all the non-boss mobs.) Since I had a tough time with the first form I thought I was screwed, but the next two forms were massively easy. Also, they were pretty awesome. I don't think this was that great of a game, but the last real boss was definitely an awesome fight (music-, setting-, and art-wise)

That applies to this game in general, though: the gameplay has some good points but hovers around so-so for long periods of time, but the music and art is pretty rad throughout.

I have to say, I am a bit disappointed with this game. For one thing, I got it Friday and I am near the final boss already. I just thought I got to the last part way too quickly. It took me longer to get to the final boss in SS. I loved SS for it's really awesome plot, plus there were a whole bunch of crazy disasters and troublesome situations that sidetracked the bros, which PIT seems to be lacking. It just seems that one thing happens after another, and nothing unexpected really happens.

I did like some parts of it though, the addition of the babies was cool, and I was happy to hear Mario and Luigi's gibberish talk again . The bros items were a nice little change from the bros attacks in SS, but those Smash Eggs were a bitch to use and I never was able to make them work, so I sold them all to buy better stuff .

Anyway, this game was nonetheless entertaining but didn't match up to SS in my opinion.

Pff, smash eggs were simple to use once you figured out a simple landmark. The items I had trouble with were the ones that kept throwing random bros at you, like the trampolines and copy flowers. My consistent performance did not shit for damage, and when I did really well the damage only barely started to approach their non-continuous equivalents (the cannon thing and the mix flowers, respectively). Of course, the mix flowers were pretty much just overpowered.
