I never tried makin a hack for SMB1. So I wanna make one. heres my progress.
Screen to MY VERY FIRST SMB1 Hack. Im so Proud of my self. A part of W 1-1. I changed the [?] Boxes to [!]. And the Fireballs. CHANGED. This part is Further more in W1-1. There is like 5 Hammer guys. You can't see the other cause they aren't in the PIC. This is the Beginning of W 1-3. LOOKS HARD DONT IT?The fire looks like Chicken Wings. LOL. This is close to the Ending of W 1-3. Im only 3% DONE. Is the title logo supposed to be missing? I know it's common for poor ROM dumps. You might like editing the palette and graphics a bit. Varity counts. Keep it up, watch out that there's not too many big death pits. | |||

Along with making your hack interesting and cunning, make sure it's possible to complete. Make sure Mario has enough room to jump between platforms. You will probably need a save state for every level, depending on how many levels you plan to recreate.
Other than that, make sure you don't use a hacked ROM to hack yours. Good luck, UZI in my pocket...i'll hang around to see what you can whip up. |

Here are my latest Screens.
This level looks Pretty Weird to me. HARDER at end of that level. Now. If your small mario and you gota go in the Brick crack, WATCH OUT FOR POOLDADO. the fire thing. This is where the 3 Pipes are. Theres only one you can go in. This is the beginning of the castle in W 1-4 This is the Middle of the castle. |

Not bad for a first hack, but you really don't need to add screens of every level you create (imagine how many screens you'll have when your 100% done instead of 3%.)
Spend less time on SS and more time on the hack. |

Who wants the Demo? The game will only show the edited levels. Levels from W 3-1 to W 8-4 = Same original levels. Only W1 to W 2-1 are edited. Give me you e-mail and Ill send the IPS. | |||

Not bad,blackdays said no SS on every level you made. I done that as well. But I still have the unrelased SMB1 hack I have at home and not in insectduel's domain. Those unreleased hacks are my first SMB1 hacks I made. However it still needs work.
Keep up with the SMB1 hack and you'll be a sucessful SMB1 maker. By the way what editor did you use, I recommend SMB Utility. Ok, I'll just expose some advices about rom hacking, the way I think it's supposed to be nowadays.
Firstly, in my honest opinion, your hack doesn't look interesting nor promising at all. I would be reassured to know that this post is just a joke. I'm not here to be mean or anything like that, and this is only my personal opinion, do whatever you want with it. So, all I can see are levels barely edited, with often the original objects just size-changed and placed in other places, letting some deja-vu in your levels; with enemies placed everywhere but where they should be. Moreover your levels don't look fancy at all, and that's a bad point. Levels have to be at least a little nice to look (that might just be a very personal opinion) at and be designed in innovator gameplay situations. And that doesn't mean extreme diffculty situations. This is what I call bungled work. What you should ask yourself, especially with SMB1 hacking as there are plenty of hacks just like yours (and plenty others better), are questions like "What will make my hack different from others; why people will enjoy playing it ?" ; "How can I create interesting situation for the player ?" So take a look at what you have in your disposition to create new levels, and think about how you should build your level before touching everything you can in your favorite level editor. Another points, your new graphical stuffs are bad : some letters and symbols in your score bar are colored, while others are not; can you tell me what is nice-looking in that ? Maybe you didn't find the other letters to replace them in a tile editor, well you have to be a little more perseverant with your researches then. Changing Mario's colors won't make him cool because that was not in the original. Graphics also take time and thinking to look good. Just remember, good rom hacking is especially a matter of time : time to search for resources and such, time to learn (by yourself or by other ways), time to think and time to apply. In terms of rom hacking, several hours aren't a very long time; they're actually a very very small amount of time. A last thing, stop alterning between caps lock and big lol everywhere, that will do nothing but decrease your credibility concerning the serious of your work (which is obviously quasi-inexistant). I think I made my point, now it's up to you to do whatever you want with this. It's never late to learn. |

Putting 5 Hammer Bros. into a level does not make it good.
And also, there are places that I recognize from the original game, along with things that would be a problem in gameplay, because you could get stuck. And last of all, "Mode Locked" isn't going to keep somebody from going there. (edited by Shadic on 01-09-06 08:04 PM) |

Hammer Bros. are very easy to fight if you have fireballs. Simply put, if the player gets to that level with a fire flower, it would be easy as pie. The easiest way to make a hard level is by using extremely difficult jumps. The easiest "fair" way to make a hard level in my opinion is with fire chains. But that might be going a little over the top. I mean, look at Mario Air. That spells "going over the top" in terms of difficulty. | |||
