I made this thread because I want to know how many weak points the Nintendo DS has. First of all, the POWER button. Above the D-Pad is a very bad idea. If your finger slips, you could turn the NDS off at any moment. It happened to me more than once, and I was not happy at all. Strangely, it mainly happens when you do something important like finally beating a strong boss or even SAVING. The second weak point I found was the game cards. They are fragile and you must carry them like game disks: in a big *BLEEP* plastic box that you can't put in your pocket. Except for those weak points, the NDS is way cool. That's all I have... for now.... Note that this thread is NOT to make you don't buy it.

Come on. You need to press down on the power button for awhile for it to go off. Chances of that happening accidentally are not terribly likely. And the game cards are not particularly fragile. I mean, if you hit them with a HAMMER... But you can carry them in your pocket if you like. I don't; I keep them in the cases since I have no reason not to. But you really don't need to.

Feel free to list more "weak points" you just made up, though

...maybe it's how you hold the DS, but I never ever hit the power button by mistake.

And for the carts being fragile... meh. They're probably not that fragile, if you like... compare them to a regular CD.

I've thrown around my gamecard around a bit and it still works fine.

The power button is a legitimate complaint; I've turned it off a lot too. Another thing is how small the buttons are; I have large hands (not xbox sized, luckily, but big) and it's fairly frustrating

The power button placement does seem a bit odd at first glance, but not once in the year that I've had mine, has my finger slipped off the dpad, onto the DS's surface, up onto the Power Button, and pressed down to turn it off. Maybe you have smooth large fingers?

The carts do look fragile, but I try to treat them like I would a CD game, directly from the sytem, into it's case. Except I'm pretty sure the cartridges would survive a drop to the floor, or some other minor mishap on the way to it's case. I don't think I'd like any game case to be small enough to put into my pocket, the game manual would be rendered useless by it's size. I wonder if DS games have little plastic cases, like the original Gameboy games had, they were just a bit bigger than the gameboy games, were usually clear plastic that snapped open on one end, and had a plastic hinge on the other end...
I have the sudden urge to go out and buy everything related to the original Gameboy system.

I have seen cases that fit several DS game cards for convenient carrying of multiple games, actually.

Aaaanyway. The ONLY time I've ever hit the power button accidentally was when I was playing Advance Wars: Dual Strike combat mode upside down (Since that's the most effective way to play it if you're left handed) and, left being right, I mistook it for the Start button.

The main menu has also a weak point. You need to turn off the NDS just for going in the options or PictoChat.

Why does your usage of "has a weak point" make me think of Secret of Mana?

From what I hear, the DS' alternate features require turning it off afterward because of the way it handles RAM; supposedly, afterward games wouldn't run right, or something.

Power button shouldn't be a problem at all. I like the placement of it and I was actually curious at first as to WHY the system didn't shut off the first time I pressed it.

But you have to hold it down for a second, so if that's the case then you're... well... really clumsy. :\

"The carts do look fragile ..."

Why are people saying this? Do those carts seriously look fragile? It's not liking scratching one will render it inoperable. I wouldn't be surprised if the things could be run over with a car and still work, something that wouldn't happen with a normal cart, in all likelihood. Drops aren't gonna hurt these things, either; they seem durable as hell.

Regarding accidently turning the system off, do you also accidently press AND HOLD select and start often? The whole hold-to-power-off thing works very well, in my opinion. I think I accidently powered off my system once, but that was because I was trying to figure out the best way to hold the system while using the stylus and accidently had my thumb over the edge of the button. But to do it on a regular basis while holding the system normally? I don't see how it's easily doable unless your hands are ginormous.

Well, the fact that PictoChat isn't WiFi is a problem. It should be because I highly doubt that you are going to sit around all your friends in a little Chat Room when you could just simply talk to them. That's possibly the biggest problem of all.

And the carts, I would have a better chance of my top screen being disconnected from the bottom than having one of those things break on me.

Does the Power button and the D-pad share the same Texture and Depression factor?

No, it looks different, its smaller, and you have to hold it down for it to turn off.

To be fair, though, the time you need to press it to hold it down is like... A fifth of a second.

The only things I have against it is the buttons are too loud compared to it's older versions. Very distracting when playing in a quiet room. That, and the right-hinge isn't supported very well. Easily breaks.

I love my DS... My old problem is the fact that it dented when I bit it (Not very hard!) and that I've got a dead pixel...

Ummm... let's think about this for a second: Its a chatting program, which you draw pictures to each other... makes since to me. I seem to use PictoChat in the middle of class... works wonders!

I never accidently pressed the power button... well, just once. I needed to turn off my DS Christmas Day and unfortunatly, it was Animal Crossing.
I didn't slip. I just wasn't thinking...

The cartridges aren't fragile. My friends want to look at them and they dropped them a lot and they are still working like a charm. Of course, I do tell them that they should be very careful with them. Eh, they sometimes don't believe me that the DS cartridges are smaller than the PSP UMDs...
