Anyway, the sticky notes that the board does not condone pirated anime (I assume also referring to fansubs as well). Well, does the board also condemn it? Perhaps my memory is failing but I can recall cases where in the past even staff stated they had fansubs and the like. I AM NOT ASKING THAT PEOPLE POST LINKS AS TO WHERE THESE CAN BE DOWNLOADED, I just thought it'd be interesting to open a dialogue of discussion on this for people to talk about. How do you feel about pirated anime, fansubs, and more? |

| I'm okay with it.
I just look at it as another means to obtain anime in a decent form. The quality of dubs has always been questional and lately it has slipped (One could argue that he has always been on slide but...). Why settle with the drivel of a 4Kids dub, when you could get an illegal version of the anime but in a purer form (For lack of better words) I look at it this way, the same way I look at pirated CD's and movies. It's there and won't be going away for a long time if ever, might as well use it for my enjoyment. Instead of trying to fight off that battle of "Only store bought items, no illegal version of it" type of mentality. |

| In general, the quality of professional releases is higher than it's ever been; you've merely got a few people who do very bad work, such as 4kids. But on the other hand, most of what 4kids has picked up has sucked anyway, so... Not a big deal. Just about everyone else puts out uncut DVDs of the shows they put on TV, and 99% of all translated anime in uncut on DVD anyway. There's little real reason one would have to resort to piracy, unless they simply can't afford to buy the DVDs in the first place, in which case I say don't spend your time watching anime anyway and get a damned job. | |||

| Fansubs are fine, but most sites with fansubs also have pirated stuff as well. Honstly, I'd rather not wait for the fansub release, I get it before it gets to the fansubbers. (edited by Rydain on 11-26-05 10:29 AM) |

| I view piracy of anime (and movies, music, software, and anything else) the same way as I view downloading a demo of a game. If I like it, I'll buy it. If I don't, I won't.
Illegal downloads have wound up getting me to spend a good chunk of money on things I never would've considered, and it's also saved me money on things I was hell-bent on spending money on until I downloaded them and found out they completely sucked. |

Kailieann: I understand your argument and I have no problem with that belief... but what if we're dealing with anime that has not been licensed by any company or has no chance of being licensed? Technically... that's a grey area.  |

| For me that makes no difference. As I said in the Cardcaptors thread, I'd rather watch anime in the original Japanese and not understand half of it than have translators I don't trust screwing around with it.
So the solution? Imports. |

| Well, there are things I like about DVD media, and things I like about the ability to get fansubs...
One thing I used to like about DVD media is that I had the option of watching in Japanese or English; although this has changed a lot recently with a lot of things being available in dual audio and subtitled verisons. I always watch in Japanese with English Subtitles anyways. I also used to like the fact that I physically owned something and I really would prefer to BUY anime than pirate or download fansubs. However, fansubs have some real advantages over DVD media for me. One, I can download some and see if I like it before I go and buy it -- there isn't anywhere around where we can just rent anime around here, so if you want it you have to either torrent it or buy it -- and if you don't like it and you bought it, then you're stuck with it. At least I can then make an informed choice before marching off to buy a boxed set or whatever. Also there's the fact that DVD media is actually physical media which is becoming a disadvantage for me. I have all these boxes and DVD's every-bloody-where. They are a mess!! But if I torrent or rip my DVD's, I have them all in one handy-dandy Hard Drive. I haven't had much luck with ripping DVD content myself; but if I could I'd do what I do with my music -- buy a CD; rip it, and then tuck the CD away in my box of CD's which is more or less shoved into a corner out of the way. Generally I want what's convenient for me. Sometimes I will go and buy a DVD boxed set cause that's what I want, sometimes I'd prefer to have it on my computer taking up hard drive space instead of shelf, floor, desk and etc space. Because I'm so good at making a mess and losing things unless it's on my hard drive, I think I really prefer fansubbed media. I will admit it is easier to loan out my DVD's to friends though  |

| Fansubs are illegal. No going around it. But for the Fansubs not Copyrighted here in North America, Fansubs are an AMAZING way of making a name for the anime you have created. Why do you think Animesuki has been up for so long? Hell, if they could, anime producers would probably endorse Animesuki. It's an awesome service.
I myself am a pirate. I download movies, games, roms, anything you can name that interests me. Hell, as we speak I'm downloading Harry Potter 4 and Megaman X8 for the PC. It's an issue the copyright management companies like the RIAA and the MPAA need to understand. Of 30 million who watch movies, at least 70% of them buy their movies. The rest pirate. Thats a gross profit of 450 million dollars canadian, if each DVD is 15 bucks. They're just upset because they're not making maximum profit. Meanwhile, there are people starving on the streets all across the world. This is why I support Socialism. Capitalism is a crock of shit. |
