Is there any way I can pop up a system message for a user of a machine by using SSH to get into it?

First off, what's SSH? And second of all, why would you want to do that? You mean like make a popup appear on some one elses computer?

SSH = Secure SHell

Do you mean in the user's terminal or on a X session? Simply sending messages to a terminal don't typically show up in X.

Okay, I think I lost you. Are you talking about making a message popup on someones computer using SSH but they are using a Mac? Is that what you're asking?

I never said he was using one. I just asked that because he said X, like in OSX. I mean it could be.

Specifically, he didn't say X, but I did. And it meant the X Window System, not the operating system OS X that appeared about 15 years after X was invented.

If you don't know what a term means, don't post about it. xD But heh, SSH is a life-saver when you need to fix something quick on another Linux computer.

Nebetsu: Define pop-up, I know what SSH is but i'm little confused here. I assume both computers are running Linux.

You mean that if there was a way to know (such through a popup) if a user logged (through SSH) into the system you're using?

I've figured out that the "wall" command will display the contents of a file to any user if they have some sort of terminal open, but what if they don't? I need to use SSH to make something pop up on someone elses screen using the terminal using SSH.

How do I do that? I try to use xmessage, but it complains about not being able to open the display.

as root: DISPLAY=0:1 xmessage "Here's a message. Put it in quotes so the shell won't pick up most characters inside, like spaces or these: *?\"

replace 0:1 with the actual number (can be seen by running 'env | grep DISPLAY' on the user's terminal). If it's in a networked environment, the first zero is likely to change... (0:1 refers to the first compter with an X server running, on the second monitor).
