To be honest, guys, I really don't care if you think the graphics are overused or not. That's not to say I don't care at all what you think; I mean, it's great to get feedback from you, but myself, I love SMAS graphics.

I'm making this hack; I decide what goes in it and what doesn't. I'll put whatever graphics I like into it, and if I think it looks good with SMAS graphics, that's the bottom line because Sto.

But as I said, thanks for the feedback.

So what if they don't make sprites from scratch. The SMAS graphics are for all intents and purposes all recolors of their NES graphics, yet you don't see people saying WHY DIDNT THE ARTIST CREATE ORIGINAL SPRITES FROM SCRATCH. For that matter, I've seen SO many SMB1 hacks that use SMB3 graphics, and I almost never hear the volume of complaints of graphic over-use as I do here. Keep in mind they are the same graphics as these, only 8-bit. It just comes off as a little hypocritical when I look at it like that and honestly, if people can be all WOW THTS AMAZNG to an NES hack with good level design and SMB3 graphics, why can't they do they same in these cases? Its just...I don't get it ._.; what's the difference, really.

And saying that there's more SMW hacks than SMB hacks thus making it more common isn't really a good excuse, I'll just say now...
I rarely see SMB1 hacks these days. Perhaps that's why?

And besides, using SMB3 graphics in SMB at least requires some effort. With SMW, you literally download a file and click a fucking button.

(Not to mention, on average, SMB1 hacks (or the like) require far more effort than "My First Hack" SMW)

I don't see what the big deal is.

The SMAS graphics look good, and there's enough variety in them that with some creativity (which Pac obviously has) it won't be stale and boring.

And honestly, what choice does anyone have? It's either this or the original SMW graphics, which are pretty ugly if you ask me. If drawing your own graphics from scratch was a requirement for every hack in order for it to be fun and appealing -- hell, if it was a requirement just for every SMW hack -- nobody would ever release any hacks at all.

You guys, particularly Xkeeper, seem to be boiling it down to a matter of laziness, which is idiotic. The fact is, there are a very few people in the world, much less on this little board, who are artistic enough to draw well, even fewer who know principles of character animation, and fewer still who can take those talents and principles and break them down into the limited world of SMW hacking, where he'd be forced to draw the characters pixel by pixel in a pre-programmed space, in a pre-set number of actions, frames, angles, and so on.

Well alright, I think since Peter put his own stance on the argument we should stop talking about it. Xk you've made some good points there, especially when it comes down to the amount of effort required. I forgot I somewhat overlooked that aspect regardless, on a personal level I have no real issue with graphics that look good and are properly executed (I've seen many overused SMAS graphics used absolutly horribly, or modified slightly, or used with clashing graphics and...no)

Anyways, lets try and keep the reaminder of this discussion about the hack itself ^^;

If I ever actually release an SMW hack, it'll use at least some SMAS and YI graphics. Why? A) I think they look great. B) I can not draw, period. That simple. Every day I wish I could, maybe someday I'll learn how, but right now, no. I'd say a bigger problem than overuse of SMAS graphics is use of SMAS graphics in some places, then other graphics with completely different styles in other places or even together.

Anyway this hack looks amazing. Most of the problems I see have been pointed out already. However:

Plain SMW graphics here, and high-colour SMAS/YI graphics everywhere else? This does not fit the overall graphic style at all.

Also:

HOLY FUCK. The level does look fairly plain here, but the background is stunning. However, the cloud at the top kinda clashes.

Finally:

I want to touch it.

Well, the hack seems nice, as I don't really pay much attenction to the graphics, I only care for fun levels, (hence the thread I made earlier here) and xkeeper has a point or two, SMAS graphics are over used, I just really hope it has atleast some good/fun levels to play, and not a boring "see the graphics and scram" hack.

[kinda off topic]
I have played a lot of SMW hacks and I almost lost interest in them, as almost all hacks I have played are boring levels with cool graphics. Most hacks start awfully hard too, I play hacks and if they start really hard on the first levels, I close ZSNES and drag them to the recycle bin.
[/off topic]

Generally saying, if you spent your time ripping the graphics and making the palletes nice, do the same for the levels. A straight level with a pipe or two that take you to a bonus level isn't fun or creative level. Adding decorative coins isn't either. Give them a touch of strategy as long as you don't get passed the "difficult" line as it's stated in SMW central.

Yes, you're making this hack, you can decide what ExGFX to put in or not, but just ignore Xk.

To Xk: What the hell has this matter anything to do with the criticize of Mona Lisa? Yes, SMAS GFX is overused now, but IT IS NOT A PIECE OF SHIT, AND DON'T FORGET NOT EVERY HACK USES SMAS GFX! THERE'S STILL LOTS OF PEOPLE USING ORIGINAL SMW GFX, THEN WHY DON'T YOU SAY THAT SMW GFX IS OVERUSED?

Whoa, cool it, bro. Xkeeper has the right to say what he wants, but Pac still has the right to take it into consideration or not.

It doesn't matter what Xk said, because Pac already stated that he doesn't care who thinks the graphics are overused.

I've said it time and time again, who gives a shit about what GFX are overused or not. As long as the level design and gameplay is fun, I could care less. It's more of an excuse now just to cause problems on this board than an actual opinion.

The screenshots look great, Pete. The level design looks fun. I'm looking forward to playing this. Great work.

I wonder if that underwater level in pic 3 has HDMA effects........

I myself think that there are already too many SMW hacks out there, so whatever you take, whether it be SMW or SMB(1/2/3) or SMAS graphics... they're all overused. I want to point out that actually, because of that, it can't be overused at all... I might be wrong, but I just said what I think about this

I really like these screens, but because I'm not really a good SMW hacker, I can't point out any mistakes

BTW, I think the name "Super Mario Quest" is taken already... however, I can't remember, who made that hack or if it's still in progress...

If I may suggest, add a mild background HDMA to the background of the Water Levels.

SMAS graphics aren't my favorite, but they're considerably better looking than SMW's butt ugly original graphics, and Pac's using them well.

I still think you need to prevent the player from jumping out of the water here. You've said you don't like the idea of an invisible tile ceiling, but this level would be insanely easy without one.

Seeing a SMB3 Boo and a SMW Big Boo next to each other is making me wonder what a SMB3-styled Big Boo would look like... Probably a single tail instead of that split number, thicker eyebrows, and a white glowing outline would do it... Not really a criticism, just thinking aloud...

I agree that the SMW graphics look out of place here.

All in all, the levels are looking much more like NES levels in design than typical SMW levels, so I imagine that will make this hack stand out. Now get back to work on it!

I don't think the SMW GFX are out of place. I actually like seeing SMW's foreground GFX used with background ExGFX

And, looking awesome, Pete! Keep it going!

Actually the background is also original GFX not ExGFX...

And I agree with Luigi-San, the SMW GFX indeed fit there. Pretty nice creativity there Pac.

These look far greater then most SMW hacks I see.

Though I have to say, some of the styles kind of... clash. Most level design I see is great. Just a few screens look bland.

Overall I'd have to rate the screens an 8/10.

I'll tell you what regardless of the SMAS graphics overused or the SMAS graphics don't go well with SMW graphics, I'd say this looks like to be a very decent hack.

Just like SMB. 2DX, SMB. DX & SMB. The Lost Levels DX remakes except this hack will be the best of the rest that Pac has created.

I'd like to say keep up the good work.
