Apparantly the military has a new weapon. Not in production until around 2010, but this is awesome.
It causes pain, without the injury. Targets will feel as if their clothes were about to ignite, and it appears to have such intense heat, that the targets will drop their weapons. Targets feel as if they have been set on fire. The military officers "say it could save the lives of innocent civilians and service members in places like Iraq and Afghanistan." So, who wants on the gun first? |

Theres a problem with this.
Iraq or some other place is going to be like "Shit we can't protect ourselves from this! Time to get rid of them with fucking bombs!". Then we make them tougher and bomb-resistant. "THATS OK! We'll NUKE them!!!?>DF Technology causes problems in War. No doubt about it. |

Well, of course its very limited. It appears to be used to fight infantry, no vehicles of the type.
I'm not sure, but the sound of a gun that did not spill any blood was awesome. |

That technology's been around for a little while now. I remember doing a report on it in fall of 2005.
That exact application, actually. I find it interesting that it's evidently "news" again. Same diagram, even. |

Originally posted by Skreename No, it's news again because it is beginning a stage of production. This thing has been around for a dog's age. Sonicandfails - think about what you're saying. Riku - it's not a gun, it's better. It's a RAY GUN. In counter-insurgency operations it is unlikely that the enemy is using a tank. Hitting a group of people like this is not limiting the capacity of the system. Tanks - war is still going to be about killing, because this isn't about paralyzing people. It is about temporarily disabling their fighting capacity so that they have a harder time killing the users of the system. |

Let's just hope these don't get into the public sector as a police instrument to maintain order. The reason why I prefer police having guns with real bullets as opposed to bean bag guns is because they really have to think about using the lethal force whereas with non lethal there is less requirement for restraint. Also, I've heard that this new weapon will not injure people as long as they have no metal on them, but if they have glasses or jewelry they will get significant burns from the metal heating up.

You have to wonder how long it will take before people catch on and realize that they will not burn up, so they won't drop their weapons. That would make it pretty useless.

The point is that it also causes excruciating pain, BooUrns. I don't think the "Oshit, I'm about to be on fire" is their first priority, rather the "Owowowowow!" part.

Heard they mentioning on the radio when I woke up.
So why hadn't they done this earlier? Using microwaves as a weapon? The technology have been around... |

Does anybody else fail to see the uselessness of this?
I hate to me a pessimistic person, but in war, you win by whittling down your opponent's forces. This gun does not do that, only disables them. What are we going to do when they drop their guns, capture them? We would have to stun EVERY single person with a firearm before being able to capture them, and that is assuming that people don't recover at some point in time and start shooting as us again. In 90% of combat situations, I can't see this having any purpose. MAYBE to subdue civilians that are attempting to harm troops but not dangerous enough to need to actually kill, but still needing to be taken out of the picture for a moment. I think that this actually does have more purpose in Police Scenarios, but I would hate to see them just firing this willy-nilly, because unlike their other weapons, this will leave no proof. (At least, I think so.) Also, I'm sure that this is ungodly expensive. And what about charges? Giant battery pack, or does it die after a couple shots?.. ......Wait, it comes from a TRUCK!? All they need to do is shoot the disk on top, and I'm sure they've just caused thousands of dollars worth of damage. Can we paint it like a target? |

Having friends in the military we went over the benifits and the non-benifits (Pros and Cons).
This is going to reaally help things going on in Iraq and around the world. And Sonicandfails look into military and past wars. It's not gonna be like "ZOMG NEWKZ." |

Psychological warfare is a pretty big thing these days. Making people feel like they're on fire is a pretty big mind fuck that can break a troop. But given that this is a continuous effect and METAL HEATS UP LIKE A FUCKER it is an awesome denial weapon that can hold people off for a while. It's not like it targets individuals, it is cast upon a crowd. "In 90% of combat situations, I can't see this having any purpose. MAYBE to subdue civilians that are attempting to harm troops but not dangerous enough to need to actually kill, but still needing to be taken out of the picture for a moment. " Turn on the news for the past 50 years? That would constitute about 90% of all major combat situations. Civilians attempting to harm troops. Vietnam, Afghanistan (Soviet), Chechnya, Nepal, Somalia, Afghanistan II, Iraq II, etc. "I think that this actually does have more purpose in Police Scenarios, but I would hate to see them just firing this willy-nilly, because unlike their other weapons, this will leave no proof. (At least, I think so.) " It is a lot less harmful, it seems, than tear gas (which can cause permanent issues) or rubber bullets and wooden dowel shots (which can kill). "......Wait, it comes from a TRUCK!? All they need to do is shoot the disk on top, and I'm sure they've just caused thousands of dollars worth of damage. Can we paint it like a target?" You ever try to shoot at a big disk on top of a truck a few hundred yards away while you feel like you're on fire and there are a bunch of guys standing around with bigger weapons than yours? I thought not. "The technology have been around..." In a deployable weaponized platform? Not really. Lasers have been around for a looooong time. We just haven't gotten them compact or efficient enough to really be worthwhile on the active battle field as a weapon. |

That has to be the coolest thing ever. Wow, weapons that make you feel like you're in pain... but you're actually not. That's amazing. As long as it doesn't have many negative side effects.... I'm all for it. It's better than fighting wars with machine guns.
But yeah I second that it shouldn't fall in the hands of law enforcement. Poor protesters. |
