The Tier List has almost no applications in casual and low level play. The best characters are better than the worst characters, sure... But the tier list is based entirely of the validity of the top strategies for each character in the highest-level play, which often doesn't correlate with anything else. Thus, I don't care, where Mewtwo is on the tier list, because he's good enough for my purposes when I'm not in tournaments and such. As stated, I don't use Mewtwo out of casual.

Marth is one of those characters I see someone playing as, and I just go, "Ah, shit."
I don't normally use him. I just don't like him. I'll take Dr. Mario, Ganondorf, DK, or Samus before I choose Marth. I just.... Don't like him Alastor, perhaps you can help me. My friend is pretty fucking good at this game. No mater who I am, when he plays as Dr. Mario, he gets me off to the edge at around 20%, back throws me off the stage, then uses two back arial a's in a row without enough breathing room to air dodge, knocking me back so far that I can't possibly recover most of the time, and I die. Exceptions are with DK (sometimes), Ness (sometimes), Samus and Link. He recovers flawlessly everytime. What can I do to counter this dick move combo? |

I would just try to cancel the attack; if you have 20 damage, you should be able to recover if you attack through it. If this is impossible, I'd just try to vary the timing on your second jump so that it's harder for him to hit you. If nothing else works, you can always just be one of the characters it doesn't work on (edited by Alastor on 01-15-07 04:58 AM) |

It's really more like....
He grabs me, backthrows me off the stage, and jumps off just as I start to READY my second jump. In other words, he gets me before I get to do a second jump, and he knocks me away that way. That attack has a ridiculous Bounce/Damage ratio, and even with the second jump and Up B, I usually can't make it, because he's also edgehoggong, wavedashing back on, so even though he's not technically "on teh edge", I still can't grab it. =\ I could try Directional Influence WITH the throw so he'd have a harder time trying to mit me off it. Would that work? |

Yeah, that could work... But most likely the best strategy is going to to just keep your distance to avoid being thrown... But, since he's much better, that's going to be difficult... There's really not much I can say here =/

I just had a big tournament with my friends on friday night. NO SLEEP WHAT SO EVER. All night was ssbm and I was always young link. I came out on top in the end but I nearly died fighting my friend who was Falco at the time. He always used his Up B move continuosly, to the point where he got the title of "Dick of the night". He claims that it's not cheap because I always use my Down A move. Now I know I wasn't using my Down-A move all the time (I made sure to throw in a variety of attacks) but he still claimed he had the right to continuously pound me with fire bird to the point where I'm up to 400% (amazing I could hold out for so long like that). Now what do guys think does my friend deserve the title "dick of the night" or not?

You people remind me how much my SSBM skills have detoriated. It's probably been two years since I played the game seriously. Part of the problem is that playing against CPU opponents got old, and finding willing humans around... at your skill levels was hard (most people I played against that weren't my sister kinda sucked at the game). The automatic handicap setting evened out the skill level somewhat, but still.

Originally posted by Clockworkz Using DI against Doc's throw is a very good way to not getting killed by it. It has a huge effect, and I'm glad you know what DI is so I don't have to explain it. You can also try: -Using DI against his back air -When you get knocked off, you don't have to start going towards the stage ASAP. Being unpredictable is incredibly important, so try dropping down farther than him and then jumping back up (but switch around how far down you drop before jumping so he won't be able to predict what to do). It works a lot better with certain characters like Link or Peach that have harder to counter up-b's. Not as much for Falco or captain falcon. -If you play as Peach/Jigglypuff/Samus, if you DI up from his back throw, you can usually get back on the stage from high up, before he can even get up to reach you. -If you are Fox/Falco, consider playing as someone else . Doc's back air and cape are pretty ridiculous against them when edgeguarding. Try learning how to L cancel. Tanks: Using a move over and over again is generally seen as a poor strategy, since it makes you very predictable and therefore easier to deal with. Young Link doesn't really have anything great to use against falco, he's more of a long range attacker, which Falco nullifies with his reflector. Try link or marth, you can hit him with a big sword. |

Can someone (Alastor) please explain to me why Pichu is "better" than Pikachu. Some people at my school's video game club told me Pichu was better. I doubt that really, but maybe I'm wrong.

Originally posted by Lakithunder It's quite simple. Those people are lying to you. Pichu has a few small advantages over pikachu in some regards, but as a whole, Pikachu is way better. Pichu's advantages: -Small size -Better Downsmash -More powerful forward smash (if you hit properly) other than that pikachu beats him at just about everything. |

Exactly! You forgot to mention that Pichu hurts itself with every electrical attack, therefore it could possibly be the worst (at least one of the worse) characters in the game. Pichu may be smaller, but Pikachu is still small enough to evade effectively.
(Note I don't care to play as either, I was just curious) |

Originally posted by AlastorWhile we're on the subject, am I the only one that thinks Ganonclone's Warlock Punch and Roy's Flaming Sword (whatever, the B attack) are unusable unless you are playing either a noob or a group of people distracted from me due to a fistfight so that I can pwn them? I mean, those have to be the most dodgeable attacks in the game. |

Ganondorf's tilt up is much worse than them. At least you can randomly catch someone off guard with a half-charged flare blade or warlock punch; tilt up is utterly worthless and can only be done from a stationary position. I mean, sure, they're not very good or anything, but tilt up A is much worse.
Also, a few days ago I fought someone who attempted to block the Shield Breaker. It didn't go very well for him. (Also, to anyone wondering why I was using the Shield Breaker in the first place: It wasn't a particularly serious match, and I really wasn't expecting to hit anything, let alone hit someone who had their guard up with it fully charged.) Ganondorf's Up Tilt is good for Edgeguarding
That's about it though. Or if someone's shield got busted. And roads; I know what L Canceling is. I'm a damn good player. But my friend competes in local tournaments. So fighting him is essentially a wasted effort. And Pichu = Down Smash. The angle at a high percent is deadly. |

Originally posted by ClockworkzNo, Ganondorf's Up Tilt is good for making the opponent fast fall and grab the edge, wait for the tilt to whiff, and then quickly drop, jump, and attack into their open body. There's a term for that, I just don't remember it. (edited by Alastor on 01-16-07 11:19 PM) |

No, alastor is talking about when you press down or back to let go of a ledge, then immediately jump up back to the ledge, attacking if you want to. It doesn't work too well with Ness/Peach/Yoshi/Mewtwo.
I think it's called ledge-hopping, but I'm not entirely sure. Does that term sound familiar at all? |
