It turns out that there is a hidden mode in the game Recca that's only available by an obscure method (Hitting reset on the ending screen of "Normal Game").
This mode has 7 stages instead of 4 and much higher difficulty. I was discussing an old title screen hack I did of the game with my friend olaf the other night, when I thought it'd be interesting to make the game unlock this mode by default. Here is the result. I also redid the title screen. Screenshots: If you think you're good at Recca, prepare to get your ass handed to you. (edited by Sliver X on 01-21-07 10:53 PM) |

If the normal game of Recca (yes, I beat it) is "SUPER HARD SHOOTING GAME" (and I loaded my savestates no less than about 10000 times)
Good god. This is just absurd. Interesting find, though. How'd you figure out how to unlock it originally? (or has it been posted elasewhere) |

I've had a suspicion that there was more to Recca than there seemed, due to the two levels in the ATTACK modes not being in the standard game. I froze the game timer to see how far it went, and found it just repeats the two levels into infinity.
So I started hunting for the routines that were involved with loading levels, and stumbled on all this. There's also a dummied out mode called "Zanki" that makes all enemies explode into bullets, but I didn't bother to try and make it enabled in-game (I enabled it by altering the memory address where the game selection is stored). Holy crap.
There's too many of them. I better get some practice with the original game first. |

Maybe I'm dense, but what platform is this for? Looks approximately the graphics quality of Gradius I etc, so NES / early arcade? | |||
