Got SNES9x running on my Macintosh with its nice big screen and am thinking about tackling one of the mid-'90s RPGs that I never got around to playing, especially now that some good English translations seem to be out for them.

Any recommendations?

I'd prefer to play in English but don't mind playing the originals if there's no good translation available or if the translated ROMs are glitchy. Just now I was fooling around with Romancing SaGa 3's patched translation but it seems a bit of a mess. Bahamut Lagoon, on the other hand, has a beautiful translation (played the original years ago) and new fonts including WVFs where there were none before! Wow!

Rudra no Hihou I've never played in any language. Same for the Fire Emblem series.

RS3 and Treasure Hunter G I played the first two hours of in the original. Liked those but RS3 didn't seem to be going anywhere. Wouldn't mind having another shot.

Bahamut and Seiken Densetsu 3 I've completed in Japanese, but would again only if the translations are good.

I've started Rudra, but it seems a little dry. Any thoughts?

You may want to give Live a Live a shot, it's a very unheard of, but very good (and I think fully translated) Square RPG.

And the Seiken Densetsu 3 translation is fairly good. I've had no complaints about it, at least.

Live A Live; I almost forgot that existed!

(I actually found the soundtrack in a used CD shop a long time ago for 300 yen... it would probably fetch more than that on eBay now!)

Tanks, which Fire Emblem is a good one to play? Took a stab at one of the later ones ("Thracia 776" or something similar) and it looked good, but I felt a bit lost, not having ever played a Fire Emblem before.

Perhaps you've played it, but I would really recommend Chrono Trigger. It might be the best RPG ever created on any system, and would meet what you're looking for in a game.

Give Terranigma a try. It is not quite widely known (I think they didn't release it in the USA out of fear of religious nuts going batshit over it), but still one of my all-time favourite RPGs.

Yeah, there was nothing wrong with SD3's English translation, though I'd need to play the Japanese version to be able to make sophisticated comparisons. (I'll probably get to that when I'm through J-SoM )

I don't particularly recall anything in Terranigma for religious nuts to go batshit over.

Unlike Breath of Fire 2, in which Christianity was literally the villain.

Might be I've been mistaking it for some other game (though there've been games that were censored or not released in the USA out of fear of religious groups for less "Christianity-opposing" contents than Terranigma has) then. Fact is it wasn't released in the USA.

I actually played quite a bit of Terranigma (Japanese original; the monospaced English version left so much stuff out...) on an emulator, and got hopelessly lost in a forest -- wolves were after me IIRC -- and never went back to the game. Could just start from the beginning again.

I played through Chrono Trigger several times when it first came out. A lot of fun and fully deserving of all the fame it has.

Let me download Live A Live and futz around with it for a few minutes. This might be my pick.

You sir, have gained instant respect from me.

Reason it wasn't released is that the second "stage" of the game is pretty much Genesis from the bible.

Speaking of games that religious nuts go batshit over, you might want to try Shin Megami Tensei 1 and 2. The final boss of the second is, quite literally, the Christian god.

Further, Front Mission: Gun Hazard is one of the best games I've worked on, hands down, in all respects from the story to the music to the graphics and gameplay. It's great. Madou Monogatari is cute and fun, and cute. Did I mention it's cute? The plot's nothing earthshattering (help Arle take her kindergarten final exam!) but the whole game is just adorable. Cyber Knight 1 and 2, especially 2, are neat fusions of RPG and strategy/RPG games with some really cool gameplay and upgrade systems going for them, although the graphics and sound in the first leave a bit to be desired.

As far as Rudra goes, are you sure you're playing the latest version? The previous release of the patch left a lot to be desired.

I'd further recommend Terranigma, then Tales of Phantasia and Star Ocean.

Terranigma kinda freaked me out though. It's a such weird RPG game. And I'm not usually fond of console RPG games, unless there's something unique about them. I can't stand RPG's with alot of random battles.

Earthbound anyone? Some people love Earthbound, others don't understand what it's all about. I'm one of those who loves it due how unique it is.

Terranigma, if you want my opinion, was one of the greatest games for the SNES. If you can stand to get past Louran and Bloody Mary, you can beat any game (And know the game gets progressively more interesting and easy)

Chrono Trigger wasn't the best, but it was good in terms of length and gameplay.

Not to mention, Terranigma has one of the best endings to any RPG, ever.

I never got to the ending!

Seriously, though. There are just so many good games that came out in the mid-90s in this genre.

Super Mario RPG!

Can't argue with the Legend of the Seven Stars!

I still say that game has some of the best minigames in any RPG out there. They're actually ... fun! Such an easy game, but so fun and unique. Plus, Bowser and Mario teaming up!?

Try Monshou no Nazo, the third game in the series, it's fairly basic and easy to get into. Thracia is pretty much the worst place to start.

I got to second the Super Mario RPG thing. Despite the weird constellation, it was a uniquely great game; look'n'feel, music, overall storyline tempo and everything were just right, thus creating an atmosphere of accomplishedness I only experienced with a few other games, like Cave Story...

As for Terranigma... Bloody Mary... heh. I remember playing that back as an 8 or 9 year old or something on the real SNES; I was around level 15 when I confronted the boss, which was 10 levels below what the game guide (I bought the game off a friend's elder brother for 5DM, ~$3, together with that) listed as the absolute minimum to defeat that boss. I was an easy two-hit kill to the gems circling around her and dealt all 1s in damage, but played the boss battle for a good 2 hours straight and actually defeated her. Hard to imagine for me these days how much of a hardcore gamer I was back then, not spoiled yet by savestating and stuff. xD On the other hand, I remember getting a feeling of uneasiness to dull scaredness in the Louran section. Sue me, I was still essentially a kid.
