HyperHacker Star Mario Finally being paid to code in VB! If only I still enjoyed that. <_< Wii #7182 6487 4198 1828 Since: 11-18-05 From: Canada, w00t! My computer's specs, if anyone gives a damn. STOP TRUNCATING THIS >8^( Last post: 6432 days Last view: 6432 days |

Yes, that beta overworld is simply far superior. The score/coins at the top and short level names kinda suck though.

I definitely prefer the good old bricks to turn blocks (blech), and the cape is terribly overpowered, but the rest of the changes in the final seem to have been for the better, in my opinion. At least it was something almost entirely new, instead of SMB3.5.
Also, I've talked to the guy with the magazines in the past, and there's really nothing else of interest (SMW-related, that is) in the magazines. |

You know, I, too, prefer those shiny bricks to the turn blocks. Turn blocks are annoying. Play Star World 1 with a Cape and keep swinging it around and you'll see what I mean. They're SO "buggy", if you keep doing that, the game with eventually automatically throw you into a turn block you haven't turned yet, thus killing you. But, if there's one thing that bugs me, it's that people prefer the Custom Block breakable brick to BMF's perfect Breakable Bricks patch. People seem to think that the ability to destroy them with a Spin Jump is a bad side-effect of it replacing the Turn Blocks, but I don't see what's so hard to understand about the fact that SMB3 didn't HAVE the Spin Jump, thus BMF's patch is perfectly.... perfect, so to speak. It makes sense when you think about it.
Anyways, I absolutely hate the overworld there. It looks like some n00b was able to draw and place layer 2 tiles pretty well, but just placed the levels wherever they felt like. I mean, would anyone REALLY put a level right there in front of that cliff? Nintendo didn't. Oh well. It's too bad Nintendo threw out the Mushroom House, though- I like that look. |

I agree with pikaguy900 about the Overworld. The overall design may be cool, but the Overworld for itself is really blend and have hardly any details. It also looks very small, when you look at the overworld on the Title screen image. Just a round small island, and that's it. In the "final" Overworld, they put much more details in it, which makes the whole thing much more interesting.

I actually liked the idea of turn blocks... However, as pikaguy said, clumping them together could cause problems.
This is where a patch idea comes into play- A SMB3 breakable brick patch, yet also has turn blocks. Meh, it's worth a shot, right? =P |

What I'm doing for my beta SMW hack is releasing 3 different kinds. One with the beta overworld, SMB3 breakable brick patch, and the raccoon mario powerup patch. Another with the beta overworld, turn blocks and blocktool SMB3 breakable bricks, and cape. And the last one with the normal overworld (with beta GFX), turn blocks and blocktool SMB3 breakable bricks, and the cape.
If someone wants it any other way, they can request it, and if I have time, I will put it together, because they will all be unlocked, of course. |

Anyone else notice that the beta overworld appears to be a giant isometric mushroom? I've looked at the beta screens for who knows how long and I just now noticed that. Really nifty if you ask me.

Huh, I see what you mean. Sorta defeats the purpose of calling it dinosaur island. Mushroom Island would be sorta weird tho. Well, makes remaking it easier to do in my head. That's neat.

Just want to point out that it's too easy to see something as awesome when you're not able to obtain it. :p Also alot of graphics is obviously reused in Super Mario all stars from the SMW beta.
And they removed the circle clouds in the background, which I think is just weird looking anyway. Which is probably why they were removed. Also, those are probably from a rather early beta as they're close to being two years before SMW was released. There might be more out there, some of those screens seems to be obviously taken by a camera. I think the overworld looks rather boring. Looking on it, some things such as water is almost the same, while others such as grass and hills/bushes (I can't really tell) is different. Also notice that Yoshi is non-existent. While Miyamoto wanted Mario to ride a dinosaur in SMB3 already, he wasn't able to. I guess he was added in a later version, probably around when they remade the overworld. I'm not surprised if some levels from the beta is in the final version, and therefore nothing really special, although I don't recognize any of the levels shown in the screenshot, just the graphical design. |

I suppose I will post these links as they are relevant to the subject. (also in case someone wants to make a beta SMW hack. ^^)

Hmm, I was looking at the first screen and I noticed something strange. What do you guys think that are those flying things in the OW ?
*Click here to see the screenshot if you´re too lazy to go to the previous page* EDIT: I found a new screen of the beta, is really small, but it can be useful (or not?). Aren´t those wooden plataforms used in SMAS? (edited by Watermelon on 01-22-07 12:23 PM) |
