Hi, for a wild I was hacking pokemon games but i got bored so I switch to Text. All I know is that text has to edited be Hex (I have a program) and that there is one or more table which allocated a decimal with a letter. EG:
00 0 01 1 02 2 03 3 04 4 05 5 06 6 07 7 08 8 09 9 0A A 0B B 0C C 0D D 0E E 0F F 10 G 11 H 12 I 13 J 14 K 15 L 16 M 17 N 18 O 19 P 1A Q 1B R 1C S 1D T 1E U 1F V 20 W 21 X 22 Y 23 Z 24 a 25 b 26 c 27 d 28 e 29 f etc... Therefore, what I want to know, Is there a easy way to find that table and how to know what you are changing (What character script). |

You seem to be on the right track. You should find some more information here:

Ok thanks for the stuff but I have one problem. I cannot run Thingy since i have Windows XP. Therefore, my question is "How do I run Thingy v 0.98 on XP".
--EDIT-- Ok I found Thingy32 a port of Thingy (DOS) for Windows. In addition, I am now able to hack text for NES games. I do not want to create a other thread for nothing so I post my questions here. My real goal is to translate games that are not release in the US/Canada. I am able to modify text from Nintendo Entertainment System game like Dragon Warrior 1.But my problem is how do I switch Japanese symbols to English letters since Japanese symbols = sylable/2 or 3 letters. Therefore, that is my question. If any one has a Japanese to English chart I would gladly appreciate. The term you're looking for here is 'romaji'. It's not really Japanese to English since it's not like Japanese is simply a cipher for English words. You can find charts of the Japanese syllabaries that show how to write the sounds in roman characters, i.e., the alphabet we use.
Katakana chart: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katakana Hiragana chart: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiragana I've gone ahead and linked you to the wikipedia entries for hiragana and katakana, since they've got tables that are a big more complete than most charts, which rely on you learning a little about the language. One thing to keep in mind that I'm not sure is mentioned in the articles; if there is a little 'tsu', the following syllable's initial consonant is doubled in romanization. Thusly, ちょっと is rendered as chotto and まって is rendered as matte. I have to say, though, if you can't read Japanese, how are you going to translate a game? It's not as simple (and perhaps insulting?) to think that it would be possible to translate well with just a dictionary and romanization. Or, if you're doing it for someone else to translate, it's usually easier for them to translate in the original Japanese than it is in romanization. Just my two cents. Good luck. |

Just browse around until you find something interesting. Download random games whose name sounds cool. That's what I do; that's how I've found many of the 59 games I've released full translations for so far.

Making tables is probably the same between NES games and SNES or GBA games. I've only worked with GBC, but it's rather simple:
- Get a hex editor (I use Translhextion) - Open the ROM - Use the "Search Relative" command, and search for a string of text - Write down the hex values for the match - Modify these values, then play the game and see what symbols appear, then write them down That last step isn't necessary, but it's useful in that it shows you all characters that exist in the tileset. You can then then open the thingy table that you've finished, click "Thingy View Active," and watch the splendor of readable text in the right-hand column. 'Course, this only works for games in English, presumably. I've tried making Thingy tables with Japanese characters, but the ASCII encoding deletes the Shift+JIS and Translhextion won't open tables done in Unicode, so I don't understand where to go from there... unless you don't use Thingy tables at all for that. |

If you were talking earlier about how to switch the graphics of the fonts, using YY-CHAR, or my preference, TLP is useful. Plus, at least for me, it helps in finding strings of text via Search Relative.
