I really want to start hacking this game because it was one of the greatest games of all time. It would be good to hack it and start making some new levels and even change some of the characters. But I need to know some information about it, I am only good at super mario 64 hacking since I had somebody that was already starting information telling. (VL-Tone) If someone could provide me with some information then that would be nice. I know a lot about mario 64 hacking so if that will help ( I think it will) then tell me. I have experience and some tools but try to be aware that I own a Mac that cannot run Windows. (edited by mortalkenshi2 on 01-16-07 09:11 PM) |

Make sure you include Sonic/Shadow
But otherwise good luck. I never hacked a N64 rom so I can't help much. |

Do what VL-Tone did for SM64 and other people did for other games. Get the data on your own.
Off-Topic: This thread is kind of funny. Like Hahah funny =D |

Alright then I misread something he wrote. But explain to me how to decode different parts of the rom. I need some sort of start on it, I cannot just do it by myself. I am only 12 after all.

4 years ago, I was twelve.
I was able to make the title screen of Metroid 1 custom to my own graphics. With no help. 13 I found the attack table for Pokemon Sapphire, and the trainer format. If you know Basic math and can fool with a hex editor. Just fire up a debugger and go look for stuff if you can't read The Art of Romhacking. |

"Noobs, lots of noobs, lots of noobs, lots of noobs, lots of noobs, lots of noobs, lots of noobs.
Everyone loves, Magical Failure...." Seriously now. It should become a mandatory requirement that in order to get approved, you know what a hex editor is and you don't say stupid things like needing "Shockwave Studio" to hack. Theres plenty of websites out there that tell you the real truth about ROM hacking and how it isn't all "Level Editors and Simplicity". A simple google search would suffice and show you more then what you need to know. If you understand something like this: LDA $3000 STA #$45 (I don't even understand it fully, but I have an idea) Then you are ready to start learning how to hack games and things like SSB. Learn more about hacking (and how hard it is to even hack a 3D game) and then come back to us. Theres an IRC channel called #rom-hacking on irc.esper.net, join it and ask questions to the experts. I gaurentee that after getting all the minimum required knowledge of ROM hacking that you will say "Screw this." and give up or rely on Level Editors for the rest of your life. It happens to 85% of us, (it's even happened to me) and it will most likely happen to you. ROM hacking is not an easy thing. You aren't doing what the original game makers had to do. Your going through their after-processed code and rewriting it. You can only go so far, there are limitations unlike some ASM hacks have led you to believe. In short. Dont ask about hacking N64 games. Dont ask about anything ROM hacking until you have read at least 10 documents on it. |

Let's just say the Game Developers made the game and then put a huge amount of barriers in front of it.
Your job is to break those barriers one by one. But you're blindfolded, and you don't have the right tools to break the barriers. Obviously in a metaphorical sense. |

Okay, I'm just throwing this in here, and I'm gonna sound like a goon, but the mesh for a character is just made up of lots of co-ordinates, right? So, surely if you found out where they were through hours and hours of corrupting, you'd find a list of the points for each character, and could change them, yes?

well I have done nes hacking and it wasn't fun (I hacked a few games especially SMB 1) since they were just old fashioned. I really played them a lot before but now they aren't as much fun. The thought of hacking n64 games was great. I have done a lot of mario 64 hacking and the only reason I haven't been able to this game is cause I can't even find one document on it. So , I need a start since I have a limited amount of time a day and experience.
EDIT:can you guys at least do me the favor of sending some documents you can find since im not a great googler. thanks (edited by mortalkenshi2 on 01-18-07 06:23 PM) |

I know about that but Its windows only!
And also, I have read over 10 documents on hacking and not only that, I have read over 100 pages of it on mario 64 though but I am sure that is not all going to be rendered useless if Im still hacking an n64 game. (edited by mortalkenshi2 on 01-18-07 07:16 PM) |

To answer your question directly:
I'm sure some people have looked into hacking the game before, but I've not seen any documentation or programs on it. mortalkenshi2, you say you have a good deal of knowledge regarding Mario64. The question is, at what level [of abstraction]? If your knowledge of hacking only involves using editors that other people have made, then it will be useless to you. If it involves using data others have found, you'll need to learn how to find new data yourself. If, however, you know how to find the data yourself already, using techniques like corruption, or reading through assembly...well, you probably wouldn't have asked the question in the first place, you'd probably have gotten started already. Just about anyone could hack anything, really, but the amount of time it's going to take, particularly to get started, is inversely proportional to the amount of knowledge you have on the topic - because Hacking is research. And research is operating system independent. |

Oh boo hoo hoo.
I use a mac too (In fact I only had access to windows regularly since about mid-december) and I've found bucketloads of data for Advance Wars 2, my pet hacking game. Get yourself a Hex Editor and start destroying things. Then look at the results and refine your destruction. Rinse and repeat. Find Data. Profit. |

I will try that if I can but I will use the little amount of hacking 3d games as I can. But can some of you help when I provide information? I also need some other people to help me with this rinse after messing up and fixing and guessing and checking.
Noob question:Whats a debugger? (edited by mortalkenshi2 on 01-21-07 07:21 PM) |
