Because they say it's not a software issue. Kind of like how Enron said that they weren't in financial troubles.

I also called him on this. However, his hypocrisy does not excuse that you are quite clearly trolling.

That would be correct.
I could respond to this with another PM (or just respond to his PM to me, which essentially says the same thing), but this is a public matter, and I really don't want normal users getting the wrong idea.

I bear no sympathy to you. That is an old matter. Are you truly so childish that you would bear such a grudge for this long? If someone wrongs you, the mature thing to do is to forgive them, not to bear along your forehead a derision of them. It's stupid, and more to the point it's trolling.

I bet he confused the PS2 for the PS3.

...

The PS3, though, is most definitely a steaming pile of shit.

(Also, maybe I'll wait for the DVD version, so at least I can have a DVD-player in my room, heh.)
This goes to you, too. I will admit that I do not like this system, but calling it 'most definitely a steaming pile of shit' is, again, trolling. PS3 has some good games, and will likely have more later. Come on, Xk; You are the board owner. You should know to obey your own rules.

I point to Don't #2 here, which states:

"Don't... Insult/bash video game systems and games without a perfectly good reason. (i.e. "DUD U SUCK IF U HAVE GAMCUB UR A GAY PKEMON KIDDIE")"

Saying that PS3 is overpriced and has no games your interested in is fine. What the three of you have done is most definitely not, and I will not tolerate it. I can understand saying it to Tanks, but Adamant, Xkeeper, you two are staff and I really shouldn't have to tell you not to do this.

Now then. any more talk along this matter will result in nothing more than this thread being closed. End of story.

Took the board down in a blaze of glory, only to reveal how truly moronical ||bass is.

I don't know, factual evidence pretty much supports my opinion that the PS3 sucks ass.

Alastor, you don't do the pointing the gun thing very well.

I'm gonna tempclose this, so that everyone can cool off. Kyouji, Adamant, and X, take it to IRC if you really want to discuss it. No last words, and yes, X, I know I'm talking upwards here, but there are better ways that this could be handled, and this is supposed to be a discussion about the Wii, not the PS3.

On the point though, the wii is only 250 bucks. It has buttloads of features that make it really enjoyable and really. Who needs a god damned DVD player in their Wii? Between now and then (the release of an entirely new piece of hardware for the same cost) you'd probably be smarter to go out and buy a 20 dollar DVD player that works just as well.

However, I really don't think that Nintendo thought this through. It wouldn't have cost them too much more to include DVD playback (again, not that it was necessary). I find it insulting to me, as a consumer, if this turns out to be true. Why couldn't Nintendo have include the damned thing?

The only advantage I'd see to a Wii DVD player would be fewer cords running to the stereo.

Well, no other way to solve this than a public apology. I did say it was a steaming pile of shit and I know I broke the 2nd rule. I've been kind of pissed today. I guess it was letting off steam from all those midterms I just took. I figured most of the board would back me up. (guess not) Well all I can ask is for the forgiveness of the others who witnessed my terrible-ness of break board rule number 2...
I am sorry...

Because it actually more of a drive issue, because the drive was only designed to handle encrypted DVDs with a different coding system for games.

The Wii and Gamecube Optical Disc are encrypted with a key derived from the Burst Cutting Area, a 'bar code' unreadable by most DVD drives.

If you don't have a DVD player at home, odds are you have one on your PC.

And if you don't, you can buy a cheap one for $30-40 or so and it'll work for a while.

DVD playback isn't really going to affect Nintendo's sales at all.

I do have one on my PC.
But Colin the reason why the PS2 and XBOX were more successfull was actually mostly because of the DVD support. Not really because of the Mature titles that were released on the two systems.

actualy, he somewhat right, that was one of the argument my brother used to make my parent get one(even though we never watched a DVD on it ). so, it maybe helped boost sale but I wouldn't said that was mostly because of this.

I'm partly serious, the Disc Size also killed it and the lack of backwards compatability with a previous generation system like the PS2 has backwards compatability with the PS1.

While I do agree that the GC would've benefitted from a DVD player, that was then. Nowadays, as said earlier, DVD players are so cheap and popular everyone who wants one already has one, so there's no realy reason for anyone to put one in their console anymore. Only drives up the price.

I'd be pissed off, having just bought a Wii, but I already have a nice DVD player so nyeah.

I'm positive, though, that DRM is the only reason hardware changes are required. DVD players are required to produce a signal that confuses VCRs, which is done in hardware. Nintendo wanted the Wii to be as cheap as possible (their goal was <$100, but flash memory is expensive), so they decided it was better to save the money by just not putting a DVD player in and thus not having to install such a chip. Also, DVDs are encrypted, so additional costs from licensing fees and buying decryption keys come into play. This all fits well with the statement that the DVD version will be more expensive.

The Gamecube's disc drive was essentially a DVD drive with custom firmware, with the discs being DVDs using a slightly different data format such that normal drives' firmwares would freak out trying to read it. AFAIK, the Wii's drive is identical - the hardware was obviously reshaped, and the backdoors were changed (not removed! ), but that's about it. So I bet we see a homebrew DVD player on the Wii fairly soon after we see homebrew on the Wii.

BTW, you're NOT paying $250 to add DVD playing functionality, you're paying a little more than $250 for the entire console PLUS DVD playing functionality. The original console is $250.
