I've been doing a lot of work on my hack, and finally I've been working on my ExGFX. For my Element Temples, I plan to use Ancient Castle ExGFX (an original set, courtesy of smwcentral.net. I saved the graphics as ExGFX80.bin and hit the red poison mushroom to use them...and they came out as a garbled mess! What's going on!?! I redownloaded the tileset and reinserted it with the same hex number...same thing happened!

BTW I extracted and reinserted my GFX first so they wouldn't get all garbled and got the warning that all existing ExGFX would be corrupted if they weren't extracted. I had no ExGFX in the ROM then, so it's not the problem. Or is it?

I know this makes me sound like a total n00b but this is my first hack, and I'm too lazy to leaf through all the technical stuff and tutorials about inserting graphics.

Once this issue is over with, screenies of the Water Element Temple are on their way.

And my progress so far:
Spirit Isle levels: All but one partially or almost done.
Trial Rock: Done with a little room for tweaking (and ExGFX later)
Overworld: Barely started--right now, it's more a debug system for my levels than anything. I like to do the levels first anyway.
Frigidia 1: Almost done. Background tiles and custom pallettes will be added.
Water Element Temple: Just starting now. I'm kinda doing things in a random order, and I like to jump the gun on my favorite ideas.

If all goes well, you actually might see a 2-world demo by the end of next month I guess I'm faster than I thought.

I'm finally back!! Yes, I'm still alive My modem crapped out about a week ago and I'm still waiting for the new one to arrive. I had to post from my grandparent's computer No joke!

I've been working my butt off with my hack. As soon as my modem arrives, I'll post some screenies:

Tower of Trials: About half done and fully planned out.
Nexus Alpha is almost done, and I'm working on two more Nexus levels.
Spirit Isle 3: About 75% complete. The Layer 2 cave section takes forever to make. BTW all the Spirit Isle levels are now at least 50% done.

I've also fixed the palettes in some of my levels and made a custom background with the original GFX for Spirit Isle 3. (I'll add ExGFX when I feel ready.)

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah, Acmlm'ers.

At last! The modem is here! I've got screenies for all to see. FINALLY! They're all of Nexus Alpha. I've made way more levels since, but a couple of file moves on my computer have caused a lot of headaches with Lunar Magic. "CANNOT OPEN ROM FOR READING blah blah blah" and disappearing data have plagued me for a while, and I still can't get the original ROM to open in ZSNES. All isn't lost...feast your eyes on these screenies!

Self-explanatory. Welcome!

First part of the level. Platform rides, springboards, and Bullet Bills coming from all sides. Fun!

Tricky, tricky. Wherefore art thou keyhole? You need the Blue Switch activated (it's in the Ocean of Elemen) to get the key. (The blocks are below you, you can't see them in this screenie.)
***HINT: IT'S ABOVE YOU JUST BEYOND THE MIDWAY POINT***

PS: Anybody here? I haven't gotten a reply in so long. More screenies coming soon. I promise to have about 10 new screenies by next post. Spirit Isle 3, Tower of Trials, Nexus Beta, and Nexus Delta are next.

Those screens look decent. Two minor graphical things I'd like to point out to you though:

1) If you look very carefully, there is a small gap between the stacked Bullet Shooters. You can see the sky in the background between them. I know it's hard to see here, but if you are playing a level with a white background, it would look rather strange.

2) In the third screenshot, look at the platform Mario is standing on and the one next to it. It looks semi-awkward. I would suggest using the support thing from Butter Bridge 1 in the original (you know, the vertical pole thingy) as opposed to what you currently have.

If you are unsure of what I mean, I can provide screenshots to show you. Other then that, this hack looks decent. I like your area names (Nexus Beta, Nexus Delta) They sound nice.

I return with screenies of TWO NEW LEVELS! !

Part of Spirit Isle 3. This is a rope/log level in the mountains.

Flying the unfriendly skies on a winged platform...

Tower of Trials, first area. The message block tells the whole story...

Fans of the original will remember the water area. I even remade it, with a few spikes to up the ante.

Go ahead and nitpick away. Nexus Beta and Nexus Delta should be up tomorrow.

Eh, some of the designs are a little bland, and some of the remakes are a little off. =/ Also, some of the palettes don't really fit with everything else on the screen and some things look half-completed.

Though its better than some hacks I've seen since last year.

The palette on picture 2 of some of those logs looks real bad. (like like someone threw up on them... )

Also, is the goomba in pic 3 wearing a mask, or is that another palette change?

Happy New Year one and all! Let's ring in 2007 with a few more screenies that I've been just itching to post.

Nexus Beta. The first part of it, at least. The only vertical Nexus level. Sorry if it looks bland, cause it's not even half done yet. It's hard to find a good moment to capture the level, but this'll do for now And Riku was right--I often leave levels partially finished and make new ones. I come back and complete them later. They look half done because they are half done!

Nexus Delta. VERY, VERY incomplete. This is the most involved screenie I could make I got a little inspiration from Secrets of the Switch Palaces--the level is supposed to be frozen, if it isn't obvious from the palettes. This level will eventually feature Fu's fireball-broken blocks, among others.

It seems the thing I suck at the most is palette aesthetics. Therefore I'm currently focusing more on tweaking palettes and learning ExGFX than making new levels right now. This is the revamped "vine cave" bonus area in Spirit Isle 4. What do you think?

Right after the start in Spirit Isle 3. I chose this one because it gives a good overall picture of the level, IMO. And it kinda looks interesting. It's my first semi-custom BG (I used the original tiles and switched them around a bit). Blue logs don't quite look right. (I'll fix them later)

Someone mentioned the "puke green logs" in that one screenie--those didn't look right to me either. Yuck! And I also need to change Fishbone's palette in the water castle area.

Don't get me wrong, this is my first hack and I'm just learning the nitty-gritty of Lunar Magic and all that stuff like Custom Blocks, Map16 and ExGFX.

Wish me luck

It was I.

The green pallette is NOT pretty on something that was originally brown. (Just to say, your pic 3 with the cave bonus area = not too pretty)

Pic 4 looks like an interesting level. Don't forget to finish Nexus Beta and Delta!!

Phaz here with an important announcement! I'm going back to school (college...lots of work) tomorrow, so there's no telling how much progress I'll make for awhile. I guess I'll leave you hanging with some more hack info:

Three more world names revealed:

Aether Skies (tentative title). Not yet started. Sky world, right after the Tower of Trials.

Warrior's Walk. An exotic, "quasi-tropical" world with an SMB3 feel. The next world after Aether Skies. Not yet started.

Kaustos Island. The volcano world of this hack. (As in caustic, this world burns--get it?) Only the Nexus can get you there. Late game world, so it's hard (but not savestate hard). I don't support hacks that are so hard you need savestates to stay alive. (Anikiti, anyone??)

And yes, there WILL be a Special World. It's top secret for now ^_~

Hey guys,

You probably won't see much progress for at least a few days because I'm focusing on college and stuff. AKA I have a life.

I've only had time to tweak my existing levels. I'm totally redoing the Tower of Trials, for one thing.

Screenies? Well, you might see some this weekend. I have started planning out Nexus Omega and Warrior's Walk 4, as well as paper sketching some custom graphics. (I don't care about order, I just do whatever levels I feel like.) Warrior's Walk 4 will be a pipeline level.

I now give you:
The confirmed custom features so far!
--Lots of custom graphics (eventually pretty much everything will be original or at least tweaked)
--Custom palettes (obviously!)
--Mikeyk's SMB3 pipes will be added later and are the feature of Warrior's Walk 4.
--Custom blocks: Fu's ice blocks, "time attack block" (mentioned earlier, gotta make it myself ), On/Off solid blocks (think PITMK2 or Stranded), "Code Lock" blocks. (Totally original, AFAIK. Colored blocks marked 1, 2, 3 and 4 that you need to hit in a certain order to pass a barrier. Another 1000 hours of ASM *sigh*)
--SMB3Adjustable Arrow Lifts (remember Level 7-6? )
--Totally revamped midway point (sorta looks like Star Posts in Sonic)
--Locked doors (thank you Blocktool!)
--New bonus game (mentioned earlier, not really started but might use the "code blocks"
--Yoshi coin tollgate blocks (thought of this on my own but it's been done or at least attempted). Yoshi Coins redrawn as Star Coins.
--A block that takes all your coins!!!

Lastly, I'm pretty sure Solar Soundtrack will be out by the time I finish this hack. If it is, music rips!

Some of this may be old'd, but oh well, I have enough experience now that I'm more or less clear where this hack is headed. Hope it sounds good, and I plan to release a demo in the not-too-ludicrously-distant future.

I guess I've rambled enough. Patience is a virtue, my fellow hackers!

I like the idea and it doesn't actually seem that hard to do. The code blocks write the value 1, 2, 3 or 4 to a table of addresses, modifying the first zero byte in the table. The barrier block compares the bytes in the table to a second table within its code, and if they match, becomes passable. If not you'd want it to clear the table so the player could try again, and probably make a sound.

I'm back!! Now that I'm through another week of school and have a 3-day weekend, you can expect some updates this weekend. And I already have some screenies for you all!

I've decided to scrap the old'd "Such and Such 1,2,3" naming pattern and give each level its own name. This is Piranha Pipe Peril (formerly Warrior's Walk 3). The whole level will get a huge graphical revamp by the time I release the demo.

Piranha Pipe Peril combines more open jumping sections with claustrophobic pipe running. Timing is everything.

Mario jumps through the vines, keeping high lest he become fertilizer.

This is Nexus Omega! It's barely started, I don't even know exactly how the design will end up. But as you can see, this level has the cool translucency effect (hard to see in this screenie). I'm also trying to find a cool use for purple coins

And also, Nexus Delta (the frozen one) will feature Blocktool's Palette and Slippery Level blocks. I'll use them to make a blue question block that freezes or unfreezes the level when hit, complete with palette changes!

As soon as I get my Ancient Castle ExGFX going, I will make the Water Element Temple (the first one you encounter) my first priority. You'll bet I'll have some screenies of that. I'll say it again, this is my first hack. I'm taking my time to give it some polish.

I'm back! Sorry for not showing up much--I've been in work up to my eyeballs and wanted to get more done with my hack between posts.
Now that midterms are over, I can get back to work again. I'm cranking out mainly levels right now, since I want to get a demo out as soon as possible.

Progress? I've made good headway in a couple of levels that will be in the demo, and I've also pretty much finished Piranha Pipe Peril (except for ExGFX).

I should have a few more screens soon, including ones with ExGFX if I can keep the work ethic to sort them and place them tile by tile.

And in case anyone noticed a few posts down, the mushroom ledges in Nexus Delta still have green around the edges. That's because a few other objects, like the Green ! block, use the same swatch and I didn't want to screw up its palette. Just ignore it :-)

Well, I guess I'll go back and work some more on Challenger Peak, a level in the mountain world. (That's all I can give away for now...)

This hack is not dead! I'm still working on it. I've been focusing on other things this last week or so, and probably will for a bit longer, so don't blame me if updates are few.
