I would've overlooked this (seeing as how I tend to ignore the.. annoyances when I played the 3d games)... but I had played the newest Sonic game on the 360.. And it is made of tears and dead kittens

... Strange to make a graph out of Mario World terrain...

Also, if you need direct proof as to why Sonic these days sucks, I have two words for you:

SONIC GENESIS

Do yourself a favor and don't look for the ROM (GBA).

I was thinking about possibly buying that game as a gift for a friend (who knows every little trick in the original).... Then I decided to give that game a little test spin.

I'm so glad I didn't buy it

How do you screw up a port!? That thing plays just as bad as some flash games!

Haha, I seriously want to play it to see how bad it is. From the things you guys have said here, it sounds like quite a monstrosity.

By the way, see the top of that hill in Xk's history image?

That game sat there.

Actually, Sonic 3 & Knuckles went there.

Sonic 2 and Sonic CD are just to the left of it, though.

Of all the classic Sonic games, I liked Sonic CD the least, actually. It just didn't feel sonic enough.

I was retarded and bought the PC version as soon as it came out, from then on I saw it in every bargain bin in every PC software joint for the next three years

I loved it so dearly though. I actually have it at home, I really need to snag it next time I run out there.

...I have to be honest, there's a video of me acting just like the N64 kid when I got Sonic The Hedgehog with a Genesis. I was like 5 or 6.

Fucking crazy times those were. I don't ever touch the 3D games at all. I don't know why, they just never appealed to me.

There are flash games and 1-man homebrews that play better than that steaming hunk of cowshit

Yeah, I remember playing some Sonic Advance like Flash game awhile back, and it was actually pretty good.

I don't know, I've just always taken a liking to Sonic CD. I liked how Sonic was the only character (besides the appearance by Amy I guess), and the music was incredible (I like both versions). I also owned a JVC back in the day, so I was playing the real game when it was new.

But, after that I'd probably say S&K (+3 if that counts) takes the cake. I would beat that game almost daily. And I honestly didn't like 3 that much at all, stand alone. Some of the music in it was just downright terrible (the Casino world). But, its not bad once you had S&K to it.

Though in all honesty, I think the original gets overlooked at times. It really had some moments, and the music and everything was pretty awesome. And it definitely had the hardest water levels, not to mention that very last level.

For me, it'd probably be:
- Sonic CD
- Sonic and Knuckles + 3
- Sonic
- Sonic 2

Funny, I also acted nuts ala N64 kid when I got a Genesis, and that's also on video.

I generally agree with this chart, sans Sonic Rush, but how you would represent that is beyond me.

And in all honesty, the Sonic Game Gear games were fun back in the day.

But, those really haven't aged well ... at all.

Sonic 2 had the best multiplayer though, I'm disappointed of the change they put in for Sonic 3.

I think that every Sonic game has sucked since Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, aside from the compilation they made, which was done fairly well. (For the Gamecube, at least.)

..Even though it lacked Sonic CD.

Then I guess you haven't heard of Sonic Gems, the second compilation.

Though, Sonic CD and Sonic R were the only real reasons to get it.

The Japanese version included all three Streets of Rage games too, which would've made that compilation awesome. But apparently those games would've nailed the Teen rating on the game, and Sega didn't want that for the US.

I didn't really like Sonic CD either, but I only got to play through it once and fast at my grandmas because I needed a PC that wasn't Windows XP...

I should emulate it and give it another shot...

Ah yes, that scrap brain water level with recycled labyrinth zone graphics. I really hated those water levels, and wished that Sonic could at least take a page from Mario's book and stop depending on air.

I only finished the first two (Sonic and Sonic 2), though I have the Sonic mega collection for Gamecube so I really need to play the others. Wonder if I should try to obtain Sonic gems just for Sonic CD, or if I should go for emulation just.

Sonic Advance and Sonic DS seemed quite decent for me considering the reviews it got, but I never got a chance to actually play those games... and I also heard that the Sonic games is always plagued by tight deadlines, which is probably more noticeable with the more modern games...

Why do you people like Sonic CD? I can't stand it... The only good thing about it, the only remotely good thing, that is, was the music. Sonic 3 and Knuckles is the true best Sonic the Hedgehog game. It was the longest, it was difficult without being too challenging for anyone to get into, it had not one but TWO sets of Emeralds to collect, it had some of the best fights and action sequences in the entire series... Seriously, my little ten-year-old heart was pumping at the prospect of actually going up into space and fighting the final boss as Hyper Sonic at the end of 3+K.

The final zone of Sonic 2 was nothing compared to the gauntlet of challenges that Sonic 3 had you dashing through. Not one, not two, not three, not four, but five final bosses for those of you with the guile to collect all fourteen emeralds throughout the course of a side-scrolling Sonic game that was so big, it had to let you save your game so you could finish it without staying up until 3 in the morning. I played it ten years ago, I'll play it now, I'll play it ten years from now, and I'll play it twenty years from now. I will never get tired of Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and it is, in my opinion, the far and away best Sonic game ever made.

I pretended S3&K didn't have a save feature and stayed up until three in the morning anyway.

So, uh.

General statement of much agreement with Grey here.
