Non-existence doesn't necessitate non-sentience.

really now? I was always of the opinion that if you weren't there you couldn't be sentient. Because you know, the conscious remaining after death is a major part of those afterlife beliefs... which is the exact opposite of believing in non-existence after death.
Unless, of course, there's something important that I'm missing here. |

It seems there is. Technically, sentience doesn't preclude existence. However, as humans, being physical beings with existence in a traditional sense we therfore assume that non-existence means that there is no sentience.

Atheist. I don't believe in any god for the same reason I don't believe in Santa Claus.

Kinda dumb to compare God to Santa, isn't it?
Anyways, I'm christian. My faith is in God, at least. I don't follow many traditions of the Christians like fasting or going to church often, but I believe he exists, or may have existed at one point. I could ramble on and on, but thats all I have to say to this topic... |

Santa Claus is a story told to children to get them to behave. Behave in accordance with how the parents want you to behave and you get a present; don't and you get punishment.
I don't believe there is a higher intelligence/force that created our universe and us in it, for the same reason that I don't believe there is a fat man in a red felt suit lined with white fur, living at 90-degrees north latitude yearlong, keeping tabs on the behavioral habits and wish-lists of every child on earth, and with a team of elves to manufacture presents accordingly (for the ones that behave), then on the night prior to December 25th delivers those presents for every child in the world in one sack, on a sleigh pulled by a team of flying caribou/reindeer, drops down chimneys (even on modern homes that use central heating rather than chimneys)-- without getting himself or the presents covered in soot-- to leave them under a tree, stop and eat whatever milk and cookies were left, climb back up the chimney and proceed with his flying reindeer to the next child's house, all without being seen, and all in the timespan of about 24 hours (allowing for the earth's rotation). If you believe in that, you just might be able to believe in God too. |

We know the man in the red suit doesn't exist. How could he? It's impossible to travel so far so fast, and plus I've seen my parents put presents under the tree many times. None of them are from Santa, as they all have a label of who they're to and who they're from.
As for a higher sentient creating life, God probably terraformed this planet into what it is at 12,000 BC. People wonder how he could have created the universe, when the bible doesn't even say he did so. Earth was probably a barren wasteland before he came here, and this being the closest planet that could sustain life, he remolded the world and created Eden. Thats the only way I could explain Dinosaurs and pre-biblical life. There is also a spike in technological advance during that period too, so perhaps Adam and Eve (Or their offspring) mated with the life pre-existant on Earth. |

Also, there may be young children on this board, so thank you for shattering their dreams if on the off chance they saw this thread. I'm Wiccan, and I still celebrate Christmas and condone the idea of Santa Claus, and put up a Christmas/Yule/Holiday Tree. I'm not about to go proving people wrong and stating that I'm superior and you're all dumb. Also, Trees and rocks exist. They aren't sentient. Rom Maniac: Children are given Santa Claus to have something too liook forward and add a magic to Christmas. How would they feel if they were told that some Middle Easterner was born that day, only to be murdered 30 years later by his followers via nailing to a big frickin' cross? |

Wow, ban a guy for stating his opinion? That's just ridiculous. Also, what was the non-sentient trees and rocks in reference to? (edited by emcee on 12-18-05 09:43 PM) |

Form =! thought
The conceptualization of intellect by philosophers like Avicenna and other Muslim thinkers make it quite clear. In addition, there is the concept of God Formless, something that is touched on by John Scotus AND St. Thomas Aquinas. The 5 proofs of Aquinas are based on the necessity of God (let's not argue their shakey logic right now). But as God is pure, there is no necessitation of anything for God Himself. Scotus argued that there are four concepts of existence. That which is not created and creates, that which is created and creates, that which is created but does not create and that which is not created and does not created. The first and last of these are supposed to be God (Alpha and Omega). But in both circumstances the requirement of form goes unanswered. Thus, the concept of God Formless, combined with the idea of agent intellect and the 9 spheres can have an interesting effect of having sentience without form. Of course, this is based off of religious arguments. Other such examples can exist. If there is form without sentience then there could also be sentience without form. Non-existence as we know it, does not exist. Everything we know of has a physical existence. Even when it ceases to exist in the sense of life it still exists in form and physicality. However, this is our lens of life. Total non-existence is simply an impossibility. |

Originally posted by Ziff So are you saying that something can be non-existance and still be sentient, or that non-existance issimply impossible? I would say that there's an infinite amout of things that don't exist. I don't see why just because something exists at one time it must always exist (atleast from our perspective within time). I think we have different definitions of existance. I would say to exist simply means "to be", or or least posess some state of being. I wouldn't say that everything that exist must be sentient, or have a form, but I would say that for something to have a form, or be sentient, it must first exist. |
