Swap rom bank 1 with rom bank 2. Or in other words, exchange bytes 4010-800F with 8010-C00F. Fun fun!

Any example of what it does? I don't have a way to swap banks handy

It swaps the west hyrule area with the east hyrule area, except bank pointers are still pointing to the other areas, so when you leave towns or palaces, it takes you to the corresponding exit in the other area. Oddly enough, enemies function perfectly, except when going to maze island/death mountain.
For good measure, swap VROM banks 1 & 2 as well, that should fix the graphics glitches. What's big about it is that it reveals a lot about the game's structure, that rom banks 1,2,3,4 contain mainly just data. The only hardcoded difference I've seen so far is that the Y coordinate to trigger the harder battles seems hardcoded, and does not change after swapping the complete data banks. Simon Belmont Except I'm totally fucking hyped about Dracula X: Chronicles. Since: 11-18-05 From: Pittsburgh Last post: 6296 days Last view: 6296 days |

That is really interesting actually, I defenitely wouldn't think to try it, and would never of thought it'd still make something playable.

This wouldn't happen to mean that you're still interested in Zelda 2 hacking, eh?
Anyways, I've gotta try this myself, thanks for the tip. |

How about posting a IPS patch of the banks switched? It would be useful for that lazy/... and well lazy.
However, since that will not be done for a while I guess I will have to go do it myself! |

Guys, if you want the banks switched, either do it yourself, or talk to someone privately. I'm not going to allow a patch that contains 32-64KB of unaltered, copyrighted ROM data on this board. (Sonic hacks are the sole exception due to the nature of current hacking methods.)
Besides, posting such a patch only encourages laziness, and that's one thing we do NOT need more of here. |

An IPS is definitely not needed.
I've been messing around with this game for awhile, and I haven't ever thought about doing that (but with those instructions, it should be easy enough with a hex editor). It's sure to be interesting though. I'm taking a guess according to what's been found that the major data banks are 1)Western Hyrule 2)Eastern Hyrule 3)Towns 4)Palace Type A (1,2,5) 5)Palace Type B (3,4,6) 6)Great Palace My major question I've been trying to figure out is how the boss' data of Palace 5 works. His data seems to be completely different than the others. I think the same is true about some of the other bosses of Eastern Hyrule, but since this one didn't appear in the FDS version of the game, it was the first I looked into. |

Did you check to see if maybe there is a special modifier code for the fifth boss? What I mean is that perhaps what the game does is load up the boss(I think Helmet Head), then perform a check to see what palace number you are in, then if it's the 5th one, replaces said boss with that boss.
Or, it checks to see if the "hard" enemies are checked, and makes the adjustments. |
