Yep, four gigabytes and pretty fast too. Still in the original package, even; never opened. Reason being it's defective.

I know this because a few months ago I bought one online, and after a month or so, it died on me. Most of the card became completely unwriteable. So I sent it to the manufacturer to have it replaced. Guess what? The replacement died in exactly the same way after exactly the same amount of time. I know it was actually replaced and not just repaired somehow because things I'd written on it weren't there anymore.

When I sent the second one in I tossed a note in the box stating these cards "didn't appear to be compatible with my system" (really, I think they just plain suck, given the overall poor quality of the manual, company's web site, tech support, etc) and I'd appreciate them just sending me a check for a refund or something along those lines. But no, they sent me a third card which I'm convinced is just going to die in a month in the same way.

I can't return it to the place I bought (Tiger Direct.ca) it because it's been over a month, and the manufacturer (Transcend) will only replace it when it dies. As they're located in Hong Kong or somewhere near there it takes forever to get the replacement, so even just sending it back every month isn't an option.

So I'm looking for some way to get rid of this thing and get my money back (~$150 at the time). The only option I can think of is eBay, but I don't have a credit card (which they require for everything, regardless of how you pay ), I doubt I'd get much for it (especially since $150 - eBay fees = some horribly low amount), and I honestly don't feel comfortable doing business with a company that sends me so much freaking spam.
The only other option that comes to mind is buying a different brand of 4GB card at a store somewhere, and returning the Transcend card in its place saying it doesn't work right or something and getting a refund. Though this has three problems: One, it's dishonest and probably illegal, two, it'd be difficult to switch the cards without it being noticeable (maybe if I switched the stickers on the cards, if I could remove them without damaging them), and three, nobody sells 4GB CF cards here (last time I asked, I was told they don't exist ).

I thought about just phoning them and asking what's the deal, but the only number on their website is in whatever country they are and is intended for sales questions or something. Email is no good; I had to email them just to get an RMA number to send the thing in (their RMA request form is broken, and every time I mention it they claim to fix it but don't), and it took like 6 tries for them to even give me that.

I wonder if there's some organization or something that deals with cases like this? I'd consider small claims court but the price would be astronomical, and I don't know how I'd prove anything.

....Anyone want to buy a CF card?

I don't know if you expect any feedback besides 'No'

Fry's has 8GB CompactFlash cards for about $200USD (~229CAD), and that is the largest capacity CompactFlash is currently manufactured in . Only problem, is that Fry's is only in the USA, and not in Canada.

Does it fail after a certain amount of time, or when filled to a certain point?

It seems to be the number of writes that does it. Each time I've got one I've just filled it about halfway with MP3s and some other random junk, basically just copying an entire directory to it, and plugged it into my DS. After a while it'd start corrupting files and such. I suspected at first the DS apps might just be writing incorrectly, but with the second one, the first errors started showing up in Windows instead. Sometimes it'd just corrupt the filesystem and a format would fix it but after a few more writes it'd be toast.

The first one was interesting, it suddenly became 2GB and about 95% of sectors were unwriteable. No amount of low-level formatting and other hackery could do anything, and every program I tried showed 2GB. With the second it was only two bytes in every sector that became unwriteable (quite odd) but this was enough to render it useless, especially since that minor corruption would obliterate the directory structure.

I noticed too that whenever anything was corrupted, Windows' error checking would always find exactly 10,000 lost files. I put maybe 300 max on them.

Maybe it's an illegally relabeled 2GB card modified to present itself as a 4GB card. There were some bootleg memory sticks that did that, I could see the same happening for CF cards.

Hm, that could be. I was never able to fill it without it being corrupted, but I didn't have much trouble just putting small files on it to test. However, after it was corrupted, I could format it and put small files on it and they'd be toast instantly, plus no software even running outside of Windows could write to certain sectors.

But anyway I sold it on eBay.
