They need to make a sequel to FF8. That's been by far the most fun Final Fantasy for me. Hurray never having to grind. Gambits are an inefficient answer at best to this problem.

I got the game last week, and I'm about 12 hours or so into the game. At first, I didn't really like the battle system, as it was too tough to manage everything at the fastest battle speed in active mode. Oh, normal monsters were easy, but the boss battles were tough because you have to unlock gambits. When you need to use items and get rid of status effects, the gambit system just doesn't work.

Once I've unlocked all the gambits, though, I could probably automate boss fights. I could already just automate normal fights, where all I have to do is make Vaan move close enough to attack. I prefer wait mode, though, because I can micromanage easier, but still keep fighting at the fastest battle speed. Most normal fights are easy if you know how to play the game. For me, it's pretty much everyone takes one swing and the monster is dead. At the moment, there's no real need to use any quickenings, attack magic, or technicks. With the right licenses, it's really easy to be near 100% MP and have everyone just attack with their weapons, using gambits for healing.

The license system also takes some time to get used to. At first, everyone is almost alike. Each character starts close to each other on the license grid. The only thing to really tell them apart is how much HP and MP they start off with, and how much they gain with each level. The customization is really nice when you get farther in the game, though. However, I have most of my main characters with important MP regening licenses.

I never had trouble with the battle system, actually. I always thought it went too slow. I've played about 65 hours into the game now, had fun the whole way. I just like the fact it can keep giving you a challenge as you play through. I played Final Fantasy X and it's much easier to blow through the game.

I unintentionally beat it at level 60, approximatly the same amount of hours. It ended much too sundenly, leaving the storyline full of openings. Not to mention half the characters seemed to just tag along without much of a story. I'm still playing it to finish off the hunts and the sidequests, almost done, almost 130 hours played now, including the time I just leave the machine on and do something else.

I don't like the chest/diamond armlet system. This being the way to get some of the best items in the game, ridiculous. Stealing from rare monsters and such aswell. Although it requires time and effort, I miss having to run through a semi-dungeon to aquire a good weapon or armorment, not equipping a relic and trying to bank on a 1% chance. Dispite the respawn of chests, it took me too long to get that Zodiac Spear.

As for the battle system, it didn't bother me and I welcomed the change. It was different from the loading screen after and before every battle, which is nice because I like to move at my own pace; not having to deal with a random encounter every few steps is refreshing. I know we all had those playing sessions when every few steps you get drawn into a fight.

Monster aggro was kinda odd though. Level 6 wolf coming at me while above 80. They should of tweaked it to enable an area type aggro range, get too close and then it will come. Simular to World of Warcraft.

Still reading?

The gambit system was not too hard to use, which is nice, but I do have some complaints about the AI. Being able to adjust the system gives priority to some comands which is nice, but the lenght of certain buffs caused too much downtime. Personally, I like going into a fight with Shellga, Protectga, Hastega(thank you jesus), bubble(no ga ) and bravery/faith depending on the equipent setup. Some of these run out all too fast and cause your automated characters to fall behind while running around. Although they cancel when it gets too far, having them heal late in a fight can be a bother.

How I fought? My partly leader had the gambit system disabled, briefly turned on to buff. I payed with a DPS class and a healer type. My healer ran around stealing and casting Cura when a character went under 60%, 80% pending the monsters level. The DPS class took care of of items situation and desperate heals trought X-potions. During boss fights, I played the healer, the others are usually on Attack nearest visible. Playing this way doesn't leave much room for something to go wrong.

I recently fought Zodiark with a level 80 base party. Harder then Solidor at 60. Again, the real challenges lay outside of the storyline, enabling players to breeze trought the end with low quality equipment for the story's sake. Players have their work cut out for them of they plan on finishing all the hunts and aquiring all the espers. Altough I have to admit, finding all those rare spawns to steal or depend on a drop to get the best of the best is rather annoying.

As for the game is playing itself, limit the use of gambits, that's all you have to do.

I haven't beat it yet but I am three pages from the end of it. I'm doing alot of hunts and gaining levels right now. I'm level 62 as we speak. I'm gaining levels on the Steppe, I just think the best exp is there. Because the Wryms give you around 11,000 without any other member in battle. Just alone so I'm doing that. I beat Gilgamesh already which was quite easy. Easier then I thought it would be.

Ogre got this, and I watched him play a few times. The gambit system looks nifty. I really like the idea of basically programming your party and overriding people as necessary. The MP regeneration means that once you have healing spells, your party can be pretty self-sufficient if you're patient. Of course, you still need to manage resources in battle, but excursions through long dungeons and other areas don't seem to have the same dread factor that they did in the old-school days. Remember having to buy 99 of every healing item before going pretty much anywhere in the original Final Fantasy?

But, for me, the game just doesn't have the ZOMG I WANNA PLAY allure, so I haven't really felt like trying it out. What I saw of the story didn't grab me, and the combat and exploration don't quite seem like they'd be enough to hold my interest all by themselves. I think it would wind up being one of those games where I play until the novelty wears off and then put it down, get distracted, and forget where I was and never get around to picking it back up. Plus, I'm a long way from getting bored with Disgaea.

The biggest thing for me, I liked how moving the characters adds even more strategy to the game rather than just pushing attack until the enemy falls.

Being able to move around the field can give you your preemptive strikes that are in some of the other RPGs. I still think it would be better if the enemies also tried to sneak up on you so you could get ambushed as well as being able to sneak up on them.

Now that I think about it, I haven't even played this in a week.

The Gambits are cool, I never set them up except for attacking who the leader is attacking and healing. If I wasn't lazy, I'd set up other Gambits but I'm usually doing just about everything to control my party.

So almost two months later and I'm still playing this game. Got one set of three's up to level 50 and the other set I am going to work on now (which are at lvl 45). I'm trying to keep everyone's level around the same. I just keep hunting and leveling up for the most part. I'm about 84 hours in.

I just thought the game was too easy. I don't like the Gambit system because it is way to easy to exploit the game that way. Seriously I was level 18 killing things like crazy in Zertinan Caverns. The only thing that put up a fight in there was the Esper. And that was only due to the zombies spawning.

Yeah, I'm hearing from just about everyone this game will keep you busy for quite awhile.

Now that my quick Wii / Zelda phase is over, I've finally gotten back into 12 (stopped playing for awhile). I'm just 28 hours into it, just beat Taimat.

I think its a solid game though. I really love the art (I was a big fan of Vagrant Story), the music is great, and the gameplay to me is pretty fun. Easy, but yeah its fun.

I don't really like the battle system. In my opinion if they wanted to eliminate random encounters they should've done what they did for Tales of Symphonia. Instead of throwing almost countless enemies at you. For example on the Leviathan, when they throw enemy swarm after enemy swarm after you. That's unnecessary. Sure being able to just set a bunch of Gambits and let your party rip through an area is cool and it makes you feel good about yourself. But, it takes some of the challenge of it. Just because they have real time battles I don't really approve of that crap like the demon wall at Raithwall's Tomb. That's just gay. I think they need to take it slow with new things. This isn't a franchise that can take such radical changes. I like the game. But, there are lot of little problems that distract from the good things about this game.

I'm about 50 hours into the game already and I need to dead south of Giza after the rains...I guess I'm binge too much on experience? or perhaps I'm subborn enough that I have to complete a hunt that is seriously out of skills I have before I can feel comfortable moving on? (I accumulated about 15 hours for 1 hunt -- when I finished the tomb of raithwall, I had played for about 33 hours ) I get dealt about 1000 dmg/character and I have a cure that only restores 250, cura that restores 500, and hi-potions that restore 600 However, I manged to win with very little use of quickenings/espers

STILL waiting for Final Fantasy XII to launch in Europe. I'm gobsmacked with Square's lack of commitment to the European / British markets. It's very disappointing to hear that they are working on a DS sequel when they have not yet released the original in a market as large as Europe and the UK.

I have about 94 hours clocked in this game thus far. Yeah, the battle system turned me off at the beginning, but I enjoy it now. Right now, I have three characters in the Level 50s range, Vaan has 2 Espers and Ashe has one. It was tough getting Adrammelech, but using Cure that healed everyone about 2000 HP each helped a great deal. I fouled up my chance of getting the Zodiac Spear though. My last successful hunt was defeating the Gil Snapper in the Giza Plains -- he wasn't really tough. I still have a long way to go before completing everything though.

For those of you at the end of the game about how many hours of playing time do you think there are up to the point where you are at the end? Exluding side quests that you may have done up to the end.
