They used to produce quality great games, that all kicked ass. any game I've played from them recently is pretty terrible. Even the great music that every sonic game has had is gone, after listening through sonic 06's score I couldn't tell if it was a surfing game or what :/

They used to dither the dither, man.

Most of their team deserted, and they had constant bickering within it. With the Sonic Xtreme fiasco their original selling power decreased, and without their own console they seem to have given up on engineering their games to take advantage of all the power they really should use.

Finally, Yuji Naka no longer is involved, they dumped the original voice actors, and Jun Sunoue wasn't even used to make the soundtrack for 06, thus making their soundtracks crud too.

SEGA sided with Sony and Microsoft, too, shafting Nintendo people who had originally liked and bought their games during their brief resurgence on the Gamecube. They're just... lost.

I wouldn't think its so hard to emulate the theme they had going, infact thats how many artists start (mimicking other works)

I think the nail in the coffin was Sonic Genesis.

That was the sign from Hell.

The fact that the game was ever released to shelves just showed how much pride they put in their work nowadays, doom ported to the atari 2600 would probably have turned out better than that crop of stinking shit.

Actually, they ported Doom to the GBA too, and it actually was done nicely and got good reviews--the same platform Sega utterly failed to port it too, even though Sonic Battle and the Sonic Advance games used it effectively.

My brother is obsessed with Sonic, so I've had a good opportunity to witness this Sega trainwreck in action. Have you guys played the latest installment for the Xbox 360? Christ. They need to overhaul whatever is in charge of controls and camera work.
I don't usually try other Sega games, but just the other day I was playing Monkey Ball for the Wii, and the controls and camera are frustrating there too. I've never played any other Monkey Ball, so I don't know if its just this latest game or what. Many of the minigames are damn near unplayable because of the terrible job they did working with the wiimote.
I haven't tried the Sonic Genesis game, but I've heard plenty about it. All of this makes it hard to believe they actually test their own games. The only thing Sega seems to do a decent job with nowadays is graphics.

better times, my friend.

Sonic: From Hit to Shit in 15 years.

(Sorry, had to say it.)

I still own all the originals, and as I was a NES/Genesis guy I grew up with Sonic. It was the shit, and I still kind of prefer it over Super Mario World (Sonic 2/3, at least. I never beat 1 due to that damn Labyrinth Zone 3 climb)

Beyond that, though, they've really crashed. Seeing the Sonic Genesis game (and I beat it with all Emeralds, too) and how utterly broken it is is just sad... even basic physics are broken (momentum isn't set to 0 when you hit a wall, so if you jump up you rocket off again), and the sounds are all wrong.

It's really, really sad when a homebrew group/guy can produce a better game than you. There was a link somewhere, but I don't have it anymore... it was a port of GHZ and ARZ from S1 and S2, and it was excellent (and damn perfect) with a ton of options to boot, including different status bar types if you really desired it.

It's kind of sad, since a lot of other games by "Sonic Team" (Phantasy Star Universe, for example) aren't bad, but could've been so much better with a little effort. It makes me wonder why they're just slacking so much.

Then again, my theory on S2B was because people buy this shit. They don't know the Then Sonic and only know the Now Sonic, so they're used to this garbage and happily buy it.

It's a sad state.

It's all about money now- Sega knows that they can sell the current Sonic games, Sonic Genesis, Sonic 360, etc.; and people will still buy them. As long as they've got money, they don't care if the game is actually not that good- people will still buy the sequal anyway, because it's a Sonic game. Just like how Nintendo gets away with releasing very few new side-scrolling Mario games when it can make quick remakes and sports games.

Still, it's a thing called integrity.

There's a reason why there's so many retrogamers nowadays. Most games today suck donkey balls.

At least there's always Gears of War.

I think that, Hiryuu, you suffer from the distortion of nostaliga. We only remember those fucking awesome core games that stand out. We only remember the really, really, really, really bad games. Right now we're bombarded by games on an unforeseen scale. That doesn't change the fact that for every good game 7 god awful pieces of shitware are produced by the giant industry anus. It happened with Atari. It happened with Genesis and SNES. It happens today. It will happen when video games are controlled by twitches in your tongue. (HEY NINTENDO BRIDGE THE GAP. MY TONGUE DOESN'T PLAY THE GAME. CHANGE IT)

I think it's mostly that this is a bombardment of shit from one company that isn't providing even the "good game" between the massive pile of 50 shits we've seen lately.

Phantasy Star Universe is the only good Sonic-Team game I can even think of, and it's neither Sega nor original (practically PSO all over again with a little different tweaks here and there)

Also, nearly all the new Sonic games share the same storyline frame, engine, and characters. So it's like they're re-releasing Sonic Heroes/Sonic Adventure 2 over and over again. Except making it worse every time, increasing what's bad while destroying anything good. Like the music. So it isn't that the old games are impossible to reach in greatness (Sonic Rush was pretty good, barring an absurd storyline) but they just don't seem to be trying anymore.

Bullshit. I was still a kid when, say, the N64 came out and that didn't make the system any better. Compare all the good games that came out for the Genesis, SNES, and NES with all the good games there were for the last couple of generations: GameCube, PS2, and XBox and before it the Playstation, N64, and Dreamcast.

why hallo thar discrepancy

I'm standing by my stance. Given that I can identify shitty games for those systems like no tomorrow (Y HALO THERE GROWTH OF AN INDUSTRY. MY 1st YEAR ECONOMICS CLASS TAUGHT ME ALL ABOUT YOU). Offer me some proof other than a nerdy child's anecdotal evidence.

You can't offer proof of whether something is better than something else, it's infinitely subjective. I'm just saying that I myself don't buy this backwards thinking nostalgia crap at all.

I may be shot for saying this, but I actually enjoyed both Sonic Adventure 1 and 2...

The problem is, the newer games don't do anything to build upon them. Super Mario 64 had a better camera than ANY Sonic 3D game so far, and that is just very, very sad.

I feel like a sucker though, I have Sonic Heroes, and Shadow the Hedgehog. I guess it's getting to the point where I just hope Sega team is going to have some revelation and stop producing shit. Sonic and the Secret Rings looks to be different than the read (Sonic with railroad-style action!?) so I'm going to get that one too, probably.

I want to play as Tails in a 3D setting again. And being able to play as Knuckles without being forced to find those damn fucking emeralds over and over again would be nice. Assholes.

Sonic and the Secret Rings had BETTER be good because it looks pretty promising so far. If Sega screw that one up, then the franchise is on life support. Seriously... at least Sonic Heroes is OK but not great. It just keeps getting worse... and worse...

Ziff: You're wrong. It was 20 or 30 bad Atari games for each good one.
