Japan got the PlayYan and PlayYan micro.

First plays MP3s, Movies and Games,
the Micro-Edition plays MP3s and Movies.
The Nintendo MP3 Player plays MP3s.

So, in the evolution of thins, stuff gets lost.

I just bought one (Nintendo MP3 Player).

Whats bad about it?
- It's bigger than a standard GBA-Cart, so it sticks out quite a bit on a DS.lite.
- It only reads SD-Cards.
- It only plays MP3's (But many Bitrates, VBR, x KHz, Stereo & Mono).
- About 40 Bucks

Whats good about it?
- It plays allmost all MP3's (There is allways a MP3 File it won't play)
- It reads SD-Cards up to 2GB (Gigabyte)
- It works on all GBA-Hardware (in contrast to what Nintendo lets you believe)
- The Soundquality is good. What your Shuffle can, your Nintendo MP3 Player can too.
- It has a nice GUI in two variations.
- Battery lasts between 10 to 18 hours (Micro / DS)

GBA Specific Features*)
- Nice and easy to use interface
- Sleep Mode
- Integrated Headphone Jack, slighlty better Quality than the GBA-one
- Sleepmode (Screen and other functions Shut Down) while still playing through own Headphone jack, also acts as a Lock.
- Some nice features in the GUI (Mario and Dancing)

*)GBA also means other GBA-Compatible Hardware

Why should I buy this?
- You do not own a working MP3 Player yet.
- You have a GBA-Compatible Device with you anyway.
- Some SD-Cards lying around (For Wii or other stuff).

OR

- You must own anything Nintendo Related (Not really a good point).

More tomorrow, after a field-test.

EDIT: The package may state the incompatibility with Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP systems, I have a Video that proofs the opposite.

So, I was out in the World today, to test this device.

The quality is good, very good (If you use the supplied headphone jack), I heard new things in songs I never noticed, real clear.

The only drawback is, a DS or DSlite is big, and to change the volume, you have to open your DS and first press start, then adjust the volume.

It's also sad there is no function to play all mp3's on the sd card, only those in a folder.

But overall, I'm happy with it.

Did another field test, this time I used a standard Game Boy Advance System.

I think it's better with the old GBA, or a GB Micro than with a DS, it's smaller, and the volume can be adjusted much quicker.

Even If you have an old System lying around, give it a go. (I only used it about 3-4 hours, but I still have the green light, I estimate a 10+ hour average for battery life).

Can you upload a pic. of the box please? I'm having trouble finding one on the net and I'd like to know how it looks so I don't screw up and buy the wrong thing. (though I did find a nice third party version, possibly for less.)

funny enough, one of these came out in the states a long time ago.

I don't think it was official nintendo, but it certainly was a GBA MP3 player. I saw it in a box that had discount stuff that had to go in EB years ago (back when there were still displays of PS1 games at GameStop)

not sure how well it played, I didn't bother buying it. Although my issue with these players would have to be volume. I've already killed my ears, so I can't seem to get them to play that loudly.

But why doesn't nintendo release these things in the U.S. I mean, if they released everything in every country, their profits would increase by an insane amount, but no, they will continue to have Japan-only, US-only, and EU-only releases. Its marketing strategies like this that (partially) drove me out of console gaming. Now I'm a PC gamer.

Not to brag but my M3 Perfect SD does that and it also plays Vorbis, MOD and variants, SPC, and a few others as well as MPEG1 video. (It also plays .GBA and .NDS files but those aren't music. )

Wow, I thought I was the only one here who used DS homebrew. Moonshell kicks the ass of every commercial DS media player AND the PSP.

A Picture of it here.

I once had a Flash2Advance 256MBit Pro, back then, when most here did not know about flashcards. Sadly it broke. Most of the Music-Players for GBA back then, where quality-wise not good, you had to convert the files to another format or a specific frequency and bitrate.

I have no doubt, that Moonshell is great (And may be even less buggy than Pogoshell) but it's kind of hard to decide on a good Flashcard or similar device for your Nintendo DS.lite. (If I want a card, I want one that fits, may uses SD-Cards, is fast, and just works.

Spoiler:
I hate people that ask for .this and .that files, they are DS- and GBA-Roms. Period.

Gee... ever noticed that Moonshell skips and slows down quite frequently? Not to mention if you decide to pocket your DS and it slides around a little too much in your pocket the shoulder buttons will change the song. In the API it is easy to tell if the DS is shut, I don't understand why they didn't disable button presses when the thing is shut.

Moonshell is nice, but it definitely is not my ideal solution for portable music. I would also need a fairly large SD card or flashcart (good luck finding a huge flashcart) to have any appreciable amount of music storage, and that would also have to be shared with GBA and/or DS games which take up lots of space as is. I happen to have a Passkey / G6 setup so here's where SD cards would have been nice. It's only a 256MB (2Gb) card.

Now... what is nice about it is the total lack o' DRM. I will give it that.

I only have one question. Why buy one of them when you can get an I pod or MP3 player with more space and such. I mean sure it's Nintendo, but I done have an I pod and plus I don't think I have any of them SD cards that you're talking about. So, this Nintendo MP3 Player also would be a hassle for me. I mean I can see Nintendo making a MP3 player, but one that only works on GBA and DS. I mean not everyone is gonna be able to get it.

I don't know how it is at your place, but at my place, iPod's are expensive, most cheap mp3-players are shit, and SD-Cards you may use to store photos or Wii save games and stuff.

My shuffle broke on me, and I would be better of buying a new one, instead of replacing the battery, and the Nintendo MP3 Player is more affordable.

As I already said, if you have a GBA compliant device lying around, it's a good choice to use that some more. And as SD-Cards are replaceable, why not just swap 'em on the fly? (Of course, it's not as confident as having a HD with a display attached).

But in the end, it's up to you, what you buy and use.

Yes, but then I got a good CF card and all was well. Not all flash memory cards work at the same speed.

Look for "ClosedSholderButton" (sic) in global.ini. You can have the L/R buttons always enabled, disabled, or enabled only when the lid is open.

good luck finding a huge flashcart

With M3 out there's no reason to even bother buying a standard GBA flash cart. Supercard too, but its GBA support is poor.

It's open-source, even.

HyperHacker: So what you're saying is that Moonshell always reads data off the disk directly? Wouldn't it make sense to you know... cache the data in RAM? Moonshell skips for me on SPC playback too. Is it really too much trouble to put 64K of data into 4MB of RAM? I would think the slowdown would be in the implementation, b/c I think the processors should be more than capable of offloading the data quickly enough for playback.

I've also played plenty of DS games on my G6 (flashcart) and have yet to experience slowdown. I'll give you a list of SPCs that slow down for me and you can see for yourself if you experience the same problem.

Are you using the latest version? I've only had two MP3s make some crackling noise at certain parts with an older, slower CF card. With the new card it works great. I do notice some distortion if the hardware volume is turned really low, but you can use Moonshell's volume control along with it to prevent that.

Of course there are other media players too.

I've seen some MP3s encoded at 320Kbps for whatever asnine reason that won't play at full-speed on the DS, but otherwise I'm fine with Moonshell and a MMD. Most of it is music I encoded from CDs with oggenc -q 4 and it plays without the slightest hint of skipping; small files, great quality, I don't know what more I can ask. Hell some commercial DAPs don't even support vorbis yet (*cough*Apple*cough*).

I've just been using my DS every since my iPod broke.

lol... isn't it a closed technology on iPods for getting the battery out? I've heard only "licensed" people have the right tools to service them.
