Im going to start developing a sm64 editor since our romhacking "VL-tone" has dropped of the face of the earth but, I just want to know where I should start. I can start and I will make sure to keep all of you updated but I need help on where to start. for example what program to use and stuff like that. I will make this a team effort meaning I will give a beta when I have made some progress so other people can work on it and the advance is bigger. Please answer this. Thanks

You might want to start by posting in the right forum. Just a suggestion...

Exactly what Luigi-San said.
But good luck. Judging by what you said in your first post, it seems like you are just going to jump right into things and start trying to make something. I am not sure you realize how difficult it actually is. |

Making an SM64 editor requires the following things:
1) Tons of ROM Hacking experience 2) Tons of experience with SM64 hacking 3) An almost complete understanding of the formats used in the game 4) Tons of programming experience 5) Tons of 3D programming experience 6) Tons of time |

Thats why this is a group effort. With many people working on it in different ways, we will be able to complete it with the little experience each of us do have. So, if anyone knows where I could start (what application,Mind that I am using a mac just like "vl-tone")
EDIT:One last thing,I seriously read through 71 pages in the first sm64 hacking thread and the 15 pages in the second one. So, I think im off to a pretty good start. (edited by mortalkenshi2 on 12-24-06 02:25 PM) |

So one of you has experience with OpenGL? (DirectX is MS-only so let's just steer clear of that.) Script parsing? All the heavy trigonometry involved in 3D hit detection, raycasting etc which you'll need to select and move things with the mouse? You've already managed to build a simple 3D scene with some textures of varying sizes and bit depths?
If not, any sort of 3D editor is going to be a ton of work. |

OK, well my editor will be open-source if I ever finish this version, so you can work from there. You'll need to completely re-implement the level loading routines (currently 747 lines for just polygons and textures, and Mario 64 is much more complicated), texture handling (works entirely different), object handling (objects not part of the level mesh), and level writing. Even that is still going to keep you busy for quite some time.
I don't mean to discourage you, but do realize what you're diving into before you jump. The current "editor" - still just a viewer at this point, even - is 6,422 lines of code. |

Where to start!? What programs to use!? ;; Tons of... what? It *seems* a 'g1v3 m3 d4 t00ls' request. I respect your decision err... "idea" to start a SM64 editor but... What kind of programming experience do you own? How long is it? Do you read/write in C/C++ or ASM x86? If you say YES, what a relief... but otherwise, don't do trolling here. ;;

I say we give up on him. We've been humoring him for to long. It's obvious he dosen't know how to create an editor (Hint) He has already tried to cling to someone who he thinks sounds like he knows what he's talking about... HyperHacker (hint). I, like him know what needs to go into the editor but am unsure how to even program to make it work. I don't think it would be helpful to intimidate him with big words anymore. Lets just wait for VL-Tone. (edited by Tanks on 12-25-06 11:02 PM) |

VL-tone is not going to come back for a long time. We can't just depend on him. We should all work on it and TANKS, if you aren't coming to help then just dont post at all!
