Two new SMB 1 hacks in a row? What is this, 1999?

Anyways, here's the read me file..hah! I forced yall to read it..
--------------------------
Toad's Treasure Quest is my latest SMB 1 romhack. The foundation of this romhack is what makes it special and very fun to play. A couple months ago our fellow romhacker, Googie, put together a rom containing hacks from various open-source Japanese SMB hacks. He then ripped various GFX from other NES games and sent me the file for a collaboration project. That project ended up dieing unfortunately. But after a couple months, I found myself with some free time and decided to make a new SMB hack using this incredible hack as a starting point.

This hack contained new music, new GFX, conveyor belts, new lead character animations and upside down pipes/piranha plants. None of the levels were actually changed though. So I loaded up SMB Utility and went to town. I created 16 original levels and a brand new title screen making sure to utilize these cool new features. I personally only changed the gfx of goombas and bloopers. This romhack is definitely easier than my previous SMB Bowser's Jumping Challenge and the levels flow much more smoothly.

The story involves how Toad came to posses all those useful items in SMB3. In this hack, you search for those warp flutes. Yes, I know Toad doesn't actually give you those flutes in SMB3. Just pretend he finds them and intends on giving them to Mario, but then Toad trips on a Goomba and drops the flutes which then get stolen by Bowser's henchmen.

Patch to: Super Mario Bros. (JU) (PRG0) [!].nes and enjoy

Please visit Digitalspace for more info

Special Thanks to Googie
---------------------------------------------

Not only did I bring screenshots, but check out this video I made for YouTube. (I also uploaded my Megaman hack video)

The only issue I have found with my hack is the Level 3-# display. At the top of the screen where it says what level you are on, levels 3-2, 3-3, and 3-4 display garbage. I haven't really studied the problem. If I couldn't fix it with SMB Utitlity, I wasn't gonna worry bout it and neither should you.

I appreciate comments. Zip file with .ips and readme.txt

I'm at work and will try the hack out tonight. Video looks great though! Is there a glitch involved in passing that one conveyor in 4-3 (maybe? I forget exactly), or is it an invisible wall?

May I ask how you got a hold of a demo of my hack. Seeing as how I have never released a demo of any of my romhacks, I'm curious to know what you are talking about. If there is a "leak" in my rom-hacking system, I must know.

I got it from your home page It could well be the project that you started with Googie. it was a 4 world version if I recall. I'm at not at home now so I don't have access to it.

Wow. I cant believe you actually downloaded that. The link was at the bottom of a page and (I thought) was hidden discretely. Did Googie tell you it was there? It was intended for Googie only. I guess people DO visit my page after all.

The 'glitch' is intentional. There are several spots throughout my game, where Toad has to glitch through walls by way of a conveyor belt. It may not look very pretty, but I think it adds some spiciness to the gameplay.

Tempting though it is to get Googie in trouble I have to say found it all by myself. After seeing your post in the screenshots thread and being impressed, I went to your homepage to see what other hacks you'd done and that's when I found it.

I don't know what I was thinking (I wasn't thinking) when I made a link for that.

Anyways, I think I want to make another Mario game hack. I want to continue with this treasure finding theme for Toad. But I want it to be a SMB3 hack. Does anyone happen to know if there is patch out there that swaps Mario's GFX for Toad's? If there is, did the hacker bother with the various power up GFX.

*Imagines Toad with raccoon tail and Toad in Hammer Bros. Suit*

If there isn't, I may need to "hire" some artists if I can't find suitable Toad gfx rips.
Also, what SMB3 game editor do you guys recommend? I use Win XP.

I remember there's a hack out there called Toad Bros. (SMB1 Hack) It looked like Omniverse made that hack back in the day but as for Toad having sprites with suits doesn't exist. The Toad smb1 hack has some Toad sprites you might wanna use to jump start a SMB3 hack. Here's a preview...

And for hacking SMB3, take a look here. You'll have no prollem using those editors in Windows XP, but MI3 didn't work too well on my pc.

There are two spinies in 1-2 (I think) that stand perfectly still.

And 1-3 didn't let me pass the level when I hit the flag post because of the Lakitu still throwing spinies at Toad, which also makes a weird glitch because you can see Toad's silhouette in the castle.

And some of the levels have flags attached to the goal posts, while others don't.

Still, I was surprised when you said you made the Bowser's Jumping Challenge hack. That was a fun one.

How the hell did that happen? xD
I'm not gonna mix vodka with my coffee in the morning anymore.

I was looking at SMB3 at my cousin's house earlier today, it shouldn't be too hard to add Toad's face with the suits. Just a minor edit where Mario's face should be good to go.

I think I'll take a peek at this later... Though, if there was ever one thing I hated about the original SMB, it was the physics. When you jumped, you had a REALLY hard time turning in the opposite direction. Thus, if you accidentally overshot a platform, chance are, you were going to fall in the bottomless pit below you no matter what. The other thing that annoyed me was having to use those Red Springs to jump over water pools. Sometimes, I wouldn't make it, because those things ARE SO DANG HARD TO USE! Then, there was the water. Ugh. They should've just used bottomless pits where the water was instead. Seriously, why use water if you're just going to fall through it and not be able to swim in it? But still, I'll check it out.

Thanks for the suggestion. But I prefer a more classic SMB2 Toad. Like the one you made for my latest hack. Here's some preliminary work Ive done.

For small Toad, I basically just scrunched Toad's hat a little to make him fit in a 2x2. Big Toad is Identical to SMB2's big Toad. I got his carrying and throwing gfx and running and jumping gfx looking OK. That sliding gfx is Toad's pulling gfx from SMB2. I just put it in for kicks, It doesnt look half bad. Looks like he's grabbing his junk in fear as he slides. lol I don't know what the heck I'm gonna do for his star jump sumersault and swimming gfx.

I should probably start a new thread about this project huh.

This hack just reminded me exactly why I HATE SMB1. XD I like the music, but most of the time, I find myself running into enemies. Not fun at all. Toad seems REALLY fast (Too fast! ), but otherwise, fun. I didn't get very far (I lost the last of my lives in 1-3. That's how bad I am at SMB!), though...

Well I'm sorry to hear that pika. You are the first though. The first to have trouble with my game. You say you hate SMB1 so I guess that's the main reason you didn't have fun. Everyone else who has messaged me about my game says they finished it 1 afternoon and some thought it should be harder. Are you using savestates and a gamepad? Those definitely help.

At least take comfort in the fact that my romhacks seem to be getting easier to play through. This SMB3 one should hopefully be fun for ya.

Savestates? Hah! I haven't made a savestate in your hack yet, and let me tell you- I ABUSE THEM IN EVERY SINGLE HACK I PLAY! That is, I use them A LOT. And it's not that I'm not having fun with it, it's that I hate the physics. I just too used to being able to easily press the button to turn myself around and safely land on a platform I overshot. With SMB, I can't do that, because doing so only makes me slow down, and it takes quite a while before I'll actually go backwards, at which point, I've already lost a life.

So SMB1 doesn't accelerate you quickly enough when you're moving in one direction and press the opposite. That might be fixable with a one-byte tweak, or might require expanding the ROM to add some new code, it all depends how the physics work.

Still, the point rests that I'm not good at SMB. I die a lot in it. (Which makes me wonder how I EVER beat SMB:TLL.... )

Oh well. I'll try again. I like the music too much. XD
