I think this has been discussed before, but a thread was never specifically made about it.,

Microsoft XNA

Totally awesome.

So it's reuseable code.

Also, "XNA" reminds me of "LAME" which apparently Ain't an MP3 Encoder.

It's also dependant on the .NET framework, which means:

Only windows users can use it
Only people who want to install .NET can use it
Only windows users will be able to play games made with it
Only people who want to install .NET will be able to play games made with it

Yeah, that sounds like one of Microsoft's ideas alright.

Considering MS is a company and this will earn them extra money, yes, they're thinking rationally.

Not to mention, if htere's enough good games made with it, it could tide some people over who were thinking of switching to something else.

Except .NET is free, so depending on it doesn't make them extra money.

They're generating a potentially larger user base. They're not losing money.

I like this idea, and I think most companies should implement this.

No, but to put them on XBLive right now, I think you need... what, a $99 yearly license to do it?

Well just imagine if it were free? It was described a while back as "the YouTube of video games". Scrolling through 42 pages of "HALO PENIS MOD" to find a game doesn't sound fun.

Wow. So suppose Apple did the same thing and started making some awesome games, you'd be OK with having to buy a Mac to play them? MS is already doing precisely this with DX10 and Vista.
What you're basically saying is "I want future products to require me to buy the latest Microsoft software and install their latest unnecessary bloatware". If you already love Microsoft and do this out of habit, then simply replace "Microsoft" in that sentence with any other company name.
Have fun buying a new TV, VCR and stereo with each new game console.

Use Mono. Magically support other operating systems and hardware architectures!

Only people who want to install .NET can use it

Anybody that doesn't have .NET or Mono is probably crazy or really knows that they don't need it

Only windows users will be able to play games made with it

Only if .NET allows you to use DirectX I suppose, but I haven't seen any .NET apps/games using DirectX (rather, they always seem to use SDL or GTK or something)

Only people who want to install .NET will be able to play games made with it

Didn't you already make this point?

Yeah, that sounds like one of Microsoft's ideas alright.

The only thing bad I see is the price, the proprietariness, the inability to distribute X360 binaries, and possibly a restriction on your own code (otherwise, you may as well distribute X360 binaries)

HH, I own a Mac. I'd love for AWESOME FUCKING GAMES to come out on this instead of sitting around and playing Starcraft all the time.

What I'm saying is that, regardless of the platform, I want to see more and more and more content being generated, controlled, and creatively utilized by users and independant developers.

But, I'm sorry. I have this damned thing called intelligence. Because I don't buy into your droolingly retarded hyperbole.

-> "Have fun buying a new TV, VCR and stereo with each new game console"

Have fun being mocked...I mean...VCR? WTF.

Maybe that's what you meant, but what you said is:

Which could be interpreted as "more companies should provide a way for users to create content" OR "more companies should encourage the use of tools that will require the end-user to buy/install/upgrade/etc a bunch of new junk" (IE .NET, Vista, etc).

But, I'm sorry. I have this damned thing called intelligence. Because I don't buy into your droolingly retarded hyperbole.

These sentences seem to conflict. I mean, intelligent people aren't really known for trolling.

OK then DVD recorder or whatever you want to substitute in there. I would hope you can see the point here. If indeed other companies start implementing this sort of thing, who's to say we won't have to "upgrade" all our A/V equipment to versions that have some "special new feature" required by their product? Just as we have to "upgrade" Windows to play DX10 games, and install .NET to play XNA games?

Ok, right here's where your argument fell apart. That's... pretty much how the console game market works, and I KNOW you know that.

HH, do us all a favor and just shut up. We don't need your broken-beyond-repair logic polluting what could be a decent thread.

Quake 4 is on Mac OS X. But seriously, there's far more than 'just a handful', when you count dozens of good free games (NetHack ftw)

Common sense is the ability to determine which of these he means.

I like RTSs, primarily. And I have a few other things for on here. But really, not that much variety =P

Excluding perhaps the PS3, a game console and a computer that can play modern games plus the OS needed to run them are two very different things when it comes to price.

That covers a whole lot of people, you know.

I've only ever encountered two programs that required .NET at all, both of which didn't do anything that I couldn't do with other, .NET-less programs if I wanted to.

And in the end, I never found any use for the functions they preformed anyways.

.NET is simply a colossal waste of space for the average end-user.

And for programmers.. well, they should use open-source code that they're actually allowed to distribute with their program, or do it themselves.

I can count the number of completely Java apps I use on a regular basis on one hand, does that mean we should throw that out too?

Oh, I guess I didn't make myself clear the first time.

HH, take your anti-Microsoft crap elsewhere. Preferably GameFAQs, I want it as far away from this forum as I can get it.

Everyone else, quit feeding him.

The off-topic bullshit stops now.
