With winter break coming up, I plan to be raking in a lot of cash and will have more than enough money to use on pc parts. I was looking at the new games coming out and I would really like it if my computer could run games like Crysis and Unreal Tournament well, but as the minimum system requirements for Rainbow Six: Vegas showed me, I would need upgrades in nearly every area(CPU, RAM, Video Card). As such, I was thinking of making a completely new computer with my old HD still in it(I'll probably have to add another HD as well). My only two real concerns are:
1.) Will it be a problem to have my old HD in a new computer? 2.) When buying a new video card, when should I buy a new one to be able to play good games like UT 2007 and Crysis as far as prices go? And depending on when I buy a new video card, what kind of specs should I look for? Because I was looking and could find $250 256 MB PCI-exp |

Just don't be stupid and put your swap file on that old HD. Might seem stupid, but I actually heard of people doing this...xD
Becuse that would slow down your computer by alot... older HD's have slower write/read speed but apart from that there shouldn't be really any problems. Personally, I would go for something around 200 USD, and no higher than 300 USD graphics cards. It's probably better to upgrade now and then with a 200 USD card, than dropping money on a 600 USD card and not upgrade until years. :/ |

Data transfer? Swap file? What do you guys mean? Why would I have to do that?
Yea, I was thinking as far as the whole DX 10/ Shader Version 4.0 systems go, maybe it would be best to wait until summer when the first few games that support and that I really want(Crysis and UT 2007) will definitely be out and Vista will be out as well for some time then? Shouldn't the prices drop by that time? I mean right now my video card is pretty decent, can run games like HL2 very well and at the highest quality and resolution but still only has support for shader 2.0... I mean, I can wait well into summer if need be, because there's no point in buying a GeForce 8800(the only DX 10/shader 4 supported card right now) now when there are no games that can really utilize its power and of course the price is pretty high. Assuming that prices will be more reasonable during the summer? I really would like a Direct X 10/Shader 4 system soon after UT and crysis come out and would like to know what to expect in terms of pricing of parts sometime in the summer so I can set aside a budget for it.
