That's what these people are claiming was the cause of a fire that severely injured a family member.

I've heard about this happening several times over. Especially when the system first came out. And then when the Xb360 came out and now with the Ps3.

I mean, it is possible for the units to overheat and cause a spark, just don't leave the damn thing on when you leave and leave it in an open area so it can breath! (I mean, I leave my Ps2 on, but thats only recently b/c of FF12).

3 hours south of me... And... rofl. I don't like X-box. Maybe they are using Dell harddrives in their systems?

This is actually, really, really old. This happened probably a year or two ago, thus why Microsoft sent out completely new Power Adapters that didn't have issues.

Either way, still definitely a bad fault on them. But like Anya said, it could probably be the person's fault too from their placement of the consoles.

Xboxes don't start fires, I START FIRES! *whips out a flamethrower*

Seriously though, it's amazing how many people don't seem to know that electronics need a bit of space... some of them do have defects that can cause this, but I would be more surprised if these people weren't at least partially to blame.

CJ: Wasn't it the battery that was to blame in those laptop incidents?

The report says that they don't even know it actually was the XBox -- they just "feel positive".

I feel positive that they're full of bullshit and just want money.

An Xbox causing a fire? I'd believe it.

When my friend tried to turn on his Xbox, we heard poping sounds and then smoke rose from the back of the machine. Then, it wouldn't turn on. It turns out the power input was fried. So whos to say... it might happen.

I believe it. My friend's N64 blew up, literally. I saw pictures. if it could happen to an N64, then I think it could happen here.

And my Xbox is pretty fried (Shadow the Hedgehog playing), so now I really don't wanna turn it on....

I can't believe I forgot to mention this, but when I was younger, I remember my NES blowing up. It sparked and smoke started to come from within. Thats when I went to Sega.

Dell too.

I was pretty lucky to see my laptop was just a single version beyond all the laptop's that had that battery recall.

But was this a problem with the laptops, or with Sony batteries in them? Those were in many brands.

Dur? You mean I shouldn't store my game consoles in boxes of oily rags while playing?

As I recall hearing MS did offer power cords with a fuse or something, but all this really did was ensure that if your power supply was faulty, it'd just shut down instead of potentially catching fire. Your Xbox would still be dead.

Well, Microsoft did do a recall on a bunch of XBox power cords, so this seems plausible.

Spoiler (Dell does not make batteries):The Dell laptops that were recalled used Sony batteries

*Xkeeper rolls his eyes

Sony's batteries have been exploding all over the place in many laptops, not just Dell's.

The only reason the Dell laptops are exploding left and right is because of a very simple little detail: Dell is stupid. They place the battery pretty much right next to the CPU, so you have the two largest heat generators side-by-side. Very stupid.

And remember, like I said -- there's no proof at all right now that the Xbox did this -- they're even saying that it wasn't a powercord-recalled model, meaning that they have about zip nil chance of winning this lawsuit.

That, and when's the last time that a game console has spontaneously combust (not counting the faulty Xboxes -- I mean systems that don't have an inbuilt chance of exploding), when off? I hear about them when you turn it on, but if this is to be believed, the console wasn't touched.

Not to mention as others have said, it's always a possibility that these people were leaving it around without ventailation causing overheating, but even then, unless the console was actually powered on or had a severe fault, it isn't likely.

Putting 120V transformers inside consoles is just asking for trouble. Aside from the heat issues, there's also the fact that the entire console becomes unusable if the thing dies, meaning you either send it in for repairs or buy a new one, neither of which is going to be cheap.

Nintendo, on the other hand, has been smart enough to use external transformers for every single console they've ever released. Not only is it quicker and cheaper to replace an external transformer, it also results in a smaller, lighter, cooler-running console, and a greatly reduced fire hazard.

Yes, but every console I've seen except the N64 and Gamecube also fails for having a big honking plug that takes up three outlets. I had a phone once that had a long instead of wide plug, why can they not do that? Or put an outlet on the back of it? Or just make power bars spaced further apart?

[edit] Forgot about Xbox 360.
