Nokia thought that cell phone users wanted to have a handheld game system to boot, I suppose. They didn't have many good games for it and the system wasn't exactly designed too well.
The phone was also outrageously priced. |

Another big problem... which I actually heard from a user who got a N-gage for present.
It's not good as gaming system and phone. It was a bit clunky for both. Which was another big problem with it. I seen someone using it as a phone and. xD (edited by Ailure on 11-23-06 06:17 PM) |

Exactly. Too bulky. People want their phones to be small and it's really hard to do that if your phone has to double as a portable game system.
The DS Lite is small but could they add phone functionality to that while keeping the size? Hell no. |

They didn't ship you any 60GB models?
And wouldn't those go to the people still on the reserve list if they didn't cancel? :\ |

No one reserved those crappy lower end Ps3, and I did get some 60 Gigs in, but I only got two in and I had two reserves left, so there ya go.

Ah. So two for reserves and two for shelves, makes sense.
Shipments until Christmas will be fun. |

Originally posted by Ailure Yeah, when people say the Mega Drive did well in Europe, they mean the UK, because it did horribly in Scandinavia. I can't remember ever seeing a console or a game for sale in a store, and no one I knew had owned anything Sega-related. Scandinavian video game magazine Power Player, upon going multiplatform at the advent of the Playstation, openly said that Sega's market share was much too low for a Sega magazine to be published - it was either that small spot in a mostly SNES/PSX-focused multiplatform magazine, or nothing at all. Saying the Mega Drive was the clear winner in Europe is just ignorant - if you mean UK, say UK. |

I believe the Mega Drive did well on mainland Europe, especially in Spain. And there was naturally a big following in South America thanks to the success of TecToy. It's hard to determine a "winner" in the 16-bit wars as there are no official figures as far as I know. It's all very different depending on where you live.

Absolutely- that was a harsh thing to say, Adamant. And as far as I remember, the UK is part of Europe and has the largest market out of all the member nations...
Wikipedia puts the sales figures at approximately 50m SNES / 35m Megadrive. Nintendo clearly benefited more from the 16bit generation, but failed to effectively see off Sega and enjoy the success it had with the NES. (edited by Kasumi-Astra on 11-28-06 02:26 AM) |

I believe the Amiga is what mainly grappled the UK. And Germany too, for that matter.

Wasn't the UK PC-heavy at some point, like the early to mid 90's? I remember the newsstands here being swamped with PC and Amiga magazines from the UK (at $10 a pop, mind you). Seemed like a huge deal.

Yeah, consoles were considered children's toys back in those days, so computers had a much larger user base, and there were a whole lot of different brands to choose between.
As for the Mega Drive's popularity, if I can live in Europe in the early 90s without even seeing a Mega Drive, let alone knowing anyone who has one, it's not popular. Popular in parts of Europe, yes, but not in "Europe". That's like saying the Master System did really well in America due to it's success in Brazil. |

All I said was that it was relatively successful in Europe compared to the SNES
There aren't any solid sales figures available, but it is commonly said that the Megadrive was more successful in the European market than the SNES. To suggest your own logic to you, just because the Megadrive wasn't successful in your country, it doesn't make it a flop in Europe When I say Europe, I've clearly explained that I mean the European market. This is most highly concentrated in the UK, so a success in the UK is much more significant than a flop in Scandinavia. And yes, the PC used to be an huge market for PC games, back when you could buy a game safe in the belief that you could take it home and it would actually work on your machine. We've also got a strong herritage with microcomputers as well- the Sinclair Spectrum and C64 did very well over here and paved the way for a successful Amiga and Atari ST. On personal experience though, I only remember seeing Amiga games in shops, I've never actually seen an ST- even though their supporters constantly pelted the Digitiser letters pages with anti-Amiga slander (edited by Kasumi-Astra on 11-28-06 11:41 AM) |

There are regional differences inside countries as well. I live in Scandinavia, and in my neighbourhood I didn't know a single SNES owner. I guess their parents weren't too keen on buying $90 games.

The Sony rep was in my store yesterday, and she was asking us if our Ps3 interactive freezes up, and I told her that it lags a bit. What I didn't know, is that all the people at Sony, and the interactive units in the stores are all 100gig systems!!! Yea, why couldn't Sony wait and then sell that beast...but the price would be even greater. She also mentioned that Sony should be shipping about 2 units per week to the stores. Lets see if that holds true or not.

Wait... so Sony employees get 100GB when the rest of us get 20 or 60GB? And even the demo units have 100GB for some reason?

Woo, more Sony thinking, I should get that patented. "The ability to do something right once or more times, then you mess up once, twice, get a internet, screw up again etc"
I just wish more people knew about all that sony has done, |
