I want to get a laptop soon but I'd like a few suggestions from you guys who I know are very knowledgable with this kind of stuff. I've asked around a little bit and I've gotten suggestions mostly to get a Dell but I want this laptop to have mobility. I would like for it, to weigh at most 6.5 lbs but around 5 lbs would be perfect. I want to be able to play some computer games on it but it won't be just for that. It'll basically be my computer for school and in case I get bored. I've seen a few with ATI mobility graphics card and Dell has one which is the Dell Inspirion 600m. I'm considering that laptop but I'd like a few more suggestions or just let me know if it'd be a good choice.

Personally, I love HP laptops, "Compaq" branded tends to be cheaper, and all the Presario lines have been replaced by the HP lines, so I say buy a Compaq 'top

Can you pay payments each month on it if you buy through HP? I forgot to mention that part too . I didn't consider Compaq because I heard from someone that his brothers was slow but I could check that out too.

I'm not sure about monthly payments, and how old is your friend's brother's Compaq?

HP bought out Compaq a couple years ago, completely didn't care about the old crappy hardware Compaq used and replaced them with nice and standard HP stuff (I should know.... running GNU/Linux and others that tend to hate proprietary hardware ). So in short, they still market plenty of computers wtih the name of Compaq, but they don't suck anymore.

i recommend dell. I 'm using it now and its great. No problem and it look sexy. I've even turned it into a muti media center, it has an s-video port and sound phones so i can watch films from my pc on my plasma screen tv. But normal pcs can do that too.

...I'm disappointed in you. HP makes some of the crappiest computers you'll ever see. They throw together the cheapest parts, mark it waaaaaaay up and offer almost no support. I bought a Pavillion a few years ago, and it overheated - wires were beginning to melt - straight out of the box. I had to cut a hole in the case and add a second fan just so it wouldn't fry itself. It came with WinME, a 5200RPM 20GB hard drive, 800mhz Celery CPU and 100 watt power supply. In short: PILE OF CRAP

Funny, had the competly opposite experience with HP computers. This baby is around still three years old, and is decently for everyday usage.

And Compaq used to be really great... back in 1995 or something. Then they kinda turned crap. :/

I'm not the only one who thinks HP sucks. There used to be a link on badgerbadgerbadger.com where I'd posted details about mine, but I can't find it anymore.

You can do the same for just about any company in existence, doesn't necessarily mean it's true.

By the way, I've had a very good experience with HP. Also, there's going to be defective units, it's just impossible to avoid. Not every manufactured computer is going to meltdown like yours.

You'd think so... How about the printer? It was messed to begin with, and never worked right. Also, my school uses HPs. They're twice as fast as mine, CPU-wise, and take literally 10 minutes to do anything.

Let me repeat the specs. WinME, 5200RPM 20GB hard drive, 800mhz Celery CPU, 100 watt power supply. These things do not make a computer, they make a junk drawer.

DO NOT BUY A LAPTOP WITH A PENTIUM FOUR PROCESSOR WITHOUT THE M

It moves faster, but it also gets so insanely hot that it destroys itself.

That is all. I lost $1400 and 1 year of data by that mistake alone.

What do you mean without the M?

I know a few things about computers but maybe I just read what you said wrong .

We have a HP computer thats why my dad was thinking maybe I could get one of those but I still have the Dell as a possibility at the top of the list.

I don't agree with you at all HyperHacker. From what i have found HP compac are quite realiable and usually powerful. I have never had any problems with them so they can't be that bad.

I suppose mentioning I'm running a 6-year-old Pavillion from HP that I haven't had a single problem with yet would be nice?

And my much older (and then thrown out, grr...) HP computer (300mhz, 64, then 128, then 192 MB of RAM) also lasted forever and was very open to upgrading (I should know, I did, quite a few times) and ran like a beauty the whole way up until it was trashed around August 2004.

In short; I haven't had a single problem wtih my HP yet.

I have a Toshiba M55-S139 notebook. It comes with Intel Celeron M 380 (1.6Ghz), 14in. widescreen, 80GB hard drive, 512MB ram, DVD SuperMulti burns 11 formats, 3 USB slots, S-Video jack. This one has 128MB(shared) ATI Mobility Radeon GFX. You get a disk with all of the drivers that are on the notebook. Its a real lightweight between 5 - 5.7lbs. It costs $950. This notebook has the power of a desktop. Has Sony quality and it's better than HP or Dell.

Abstain buying from compaq. They make/hack their mobos, so it can recognize just a mere dozen of cards, ram and even power supply! I have one, and damn, I hate not being able to upgrade almost anything at all, given its horrible incompatability.

Dell laptops are good specs wise, but at least in my case, their support service sucks. When my brother's lap's battery dide, getting a new one from 'em took years to get a first response, let alone the deliver.

Didn't you call that thing the Trash Can 3000 or some such? Anyway I guess HP is a gamble. I know mine was junk, and I've heard a lot of similar horror stories. Maybe it depends where you buy it.

Though when you tried to upgrade, didn't you find it really cramped inside? I always had to take nearly everything out to get at the RAM or CPU.

Dell said I can't use their credit program so it's back to the beginning for me

I was thinking about HP or Compaq one again but I'm still confused
