Bigger chance that youīd end up in my apartment because thatīs where I am during the school days.
But that depends on when youīre travelling. |

And hey, one more way to murder someone. Screw up their teleporter and get it to send them in to space. Or several miles in the air. Or in to the core of the earth.
But that has nothing to do with anything, since there's no proof of any of this and if there was an article, it was probably satirical anyway. Plus these posts so far have been... Less than intelligent. but whatever. (edited by Alastor the Stylish on 12-06-05 10:44 PM) |

If teleporters came out, the people working in the airports would freak out and so would the terrorists. They'd teleport bombs across the country and blow shit up. (edited by [GGS] Cruel Justice on 12-06-05 04:11 PM) |

That article is basically what you'd read in any quantum computing textbook made in the past few years. Nothing really new. I took a course on it in 2003 and that article was from 2004, they just performed "quantum teleportation" on different particles before that. (Photons)
I've read somewhere that the teleporter just simply copies you, and then teleports your data over to the other side, and then recreates you. The ORIGINAL you is deleted... and you'd just be a copy of the original. O_o While this is technically true, you'd have no worries about being a copy. It's the same you. (assuming there was a real working teleporter with no flaws.) You see, current quantum theory says that you simply cannot copy a quantum state. Unless our current quantum theory is really WRONG, building quantum computers will be a bitch. Think of your current computer and not being able to duplicate the data for a jpg or a gif. If you copy it you'd basically steal it b/c it would destroy the original in the process. edit: the qubits they mention in the article can be represented as 2 dimensional complex vector in C2. So you have the vector <a+bi, c+di> where a,b,c,d can basically be anything. That is a representation of the state of two electrons in an atom. Quantum state is mostly determined by electrons. Now let's say you "read" the state of the qubit <a+bi, c+di>. When you do that you can write it down, but the state of the original qubit reverts to either <0,1> or <1,0>. In principle it's the same idea that you can't conduct an experiment without affecting the experiment in some small way. In this case it's catastrophic. None of you will understand any of this if you have not been in at least an international baccaulerate physics class. Well, hey, that's my guessing, but these "copy paste delete" theories are totally ludicrous. They don't clone you then practically vaporize you, they destruct you into atoms and send you over an area as a wave like a radio wave, then reconstruct you at a different point. That's what we were learning about when our teacher presented us with that newspaper article. I found it interesting, otherwise I wouldn't have posted this. To those who don't believe it, I couldn't give a rat's ass more considering I'm not even that interested anyway, but it's something not many people hear about.
Edit: I'm practically losing hope in even wasting my time to scan the fucking newspaper article now as too many people around here are getting too dimwitted for my tastes when I have more important things to be dealing with. I may do so just to spite those of you who are making jokes about this, but other than that, no. (edited by Blue Falkon on 12-06-05 09:58 PM) |

I could understand the vaporizing part but I cannot see how anyone could succeed at reconstruction. That would definately take some time. I wouldn't want to be a guinea pig.

Slay. He's saying he's reminded of Slay.
Only, Slay is Kutske now, and they don't have the same IP, so... No. Not quite. I do see the similarities, though. |

Would I use it? Fuck yes - if it was tested enough. I'd want to be sure I'd arrive in one piece and not like part fly or something.
Seriously, how awesome would it be to be able to walk down the street, take a left, head into some Japanese company headquarters, do your job, walk back out of the building, turn right, pick up some authentic Italian food, take a left and be back home? Only thing is, it'll never happen. It would bankrupt any and all transportation businesses (except maybe those who make racecars) and thus the oil industry. Nothing that harms the oil industry will ever be allowed to develop to a usable state, at least not in the US. (Japan is close with a pretty nice electric car, but right now it costs $350,000. ) Yay capitalism! Also, like others have said, I've only ever heard of teleportation of single photons. Of course, you know the government is waaaaay ahead in technology, so you never know... |
