Okay, so...I have this really sick idea. What if someone made a Mario game styled like a Metroid game? The entire thing would be one level, using every level accessible in Lunar Magic, beginning at the surface and ending in a showdown with Bowser.

Obvious problem with this: lots has to be changed, and it can't be done with conventional hacking, a.k.a. I do not know what the deuce I'm doing.

What I'd like to do is this:

You travel through one level, doors, teleport blocks and pipes connecting you to different "levels" (which would be the "rooms" in Metroid). You get certain things (such as a Switch Palace or defeating a boss) and are able to go to new areas. Power-ups act differently.

Worlds I have so far:
Surface world, Eastern ruins, cavern, jungle brinstar-like area, flooded cavern, jungle ruins, water world, lava world, western high-tech fortress, lava ruins, bowser's castle.

Seperations:
Fire Mario, Feather Mario, (Laser Mario), 4 Switch Palaces, Renzor, Big Boo, 7 Koopa Kids, On/Off switch, locked doors

**MAJOR PROBLEMS**
1. Saving. Needless to say, if you die, you don't want to have to start all over again or only have there be one mid-way point.
2. How to work this - I'd need to find a way to teleport you somewhere after defeating a boss or hitting a switch palace so it doesn't end the level.
3. Custom blocks - defeating a certain boss makes a kind of block passable.
4. I want water to act like Metroid water, fixed by a block or item you find.
5. Power-ups - much differently. Let's say you get the fire flower - from then on you can become fire Mario at any time. But maybe there's a limited amount of fireballs and you can increase the amount using expansions...
6. A health bar? That'd be cool. Also increasable.
7. New power-up - Laser Mario! Reflectable off mirrors, opens certain blocks, stuff like that.

So, that's my idea. If impossible, so be it...I'd really like help on this and would be interested in a multi-person hack, especially since I know jack squat about in-depth hacking, such as ASM and things like that.

Thanks for everything!

I thought of doing this once... one major problem I had was discovering new areas- I suppose if you could find a way to make the fireflower permanent, that would be a start, as you could melt blocks and discover that way... however, you'd definately need more than that, look how many weapons Metroid has after all...

I would assume that it wouldn't be too complicated to get rid of being warped to the map after a Switch Palace... bosses could be more complicated, especially bosses with their own rooms.

I've thought of something like this before but not on the scale that you are thinking of. This would definitely be an awesome game if pulled off right.

For something like this, I'd think that a team effort would be best because this seems like it would require a lot of ASM or something similar.

Let's see, things you'd need...

You'd need to dump most of the Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion and Metroid Zero Mission graphics, plus probably make some of your own for areas that haven't been featured in a Metroid game.

For the Laser Mario idea, I suggest contacting KPhoenix. He just created a Laser Suit power-up for Mario.

For just plain moving around, you'll probably have to hack the physics of the game a little. You can either go for the "floaty" feel in SM and MF or you can choose the more natural drop in MZM. Also, you'll need to change it for sure if you plan on adding a Hi-Jump item of sorts.

I'm definitely interested in this and if you decided to go with it and make this a team effort, I'd be happy to help. Metroid is my favorite series and I've always wanted to create a Metroid game in some way.

I think you're overblowing the Metroid thing in it. He meant that it would play like one a bit, in the same way that Kirby and the Amazing Mirror or any of the recent Castlevania games do, not that it would be a Metroid game in the Mario engine.

Sounds rather like a more exploratory version of "The Castle" (that was the name, wasn't it? One big level, no exits). The idea's come up a few times, but I don't think anyone's taken that particular one (the free-range exploration one) too far.

This sounds like it could be a great idea if it's pulled off right. I personally cannot be a very big help because I know virtually nothing about hacking (besides what you can do in LM). I would like to see this idea actually happen though. I hope people with hacking skills will work with you to make it happen.

Well, that's what custom blocks are going to be used for. Like, you won't be able to access some areas until you hit the Switch Palaces, or until you beat one of the nine bosses in the game...discovery isn't a problem, really.

Super Metroid graphics primarily, it's by far my favorite Metroid game as far as graphics go. I might steal some Chozodia/Space Pirate Mothership graphics from MZM, and then a little bit from Fusion. Maybe a Night world like the one in Fusion would be cool...or a frozen world. Hmm...there are seven Koopa Kids, after all...*plots deviously*...

As far as falling goes, I'd also base it off SM and Fusion. That's how I like it...and a Hi-Jump item was thought of, but I dunno yet.

I'd be really happy with your help, is there a particular time you can talk about this on like IM or something, or should I just PM you?

This has been discussed a few times. Some of the cooler suggestions I recall include:

  • Using the overworld as a map. You'd go into a special room (mainly so the effects of reloading the level aren't so noticeable) and do something to "show the map", which would actually exit back to the overworld. You could choose how the map works: A, make it truly just a map; there's no way to move between levels, but you can use Start to browse. B, make it a teleporter, where you can choose a destination and jump to it; essentially just like SMW, except you could get from any point in the game to any other without ever using the map since it's all connected as one big level. You could have save points here too, possibly by hacking the save prompt routine to show a prompt after every level, so you'd be prompted to save every time you view the map. Only big issue is the music would change, killing the "just viewing a map" feel, but that's probably easy to avoid. Of course you'd need to disable 2-player mode, but could use custom blocks to switch Mario and Luigi for a 2-player coop game. (For 1-player mode, just tell the player to unplug controller 2. The game uses controller 1 for both if #2 is not present.)
  • Building on this, submaps could be smaller planets or something.
  • Obviously there'd be no time limit, but the timer could be invoked at any time if you wanted a time limit for certain parts, EG if you need to escape from an exploding space station. You enable the timer by just setting the current time limit to nonzero, but I'm not sure how you turn it back off without killing the player.
  • FPS-like powerup selection. You can have many powerups but only use one or two at a time depending which they are. (EG you could use the cape and fireballs at the same time, but not fireballs and lasers.)

One possible issue is memory. The game has only 4 memory slots for level status. (This holds info like which coins you grabbed and such.) Rooms sharing memory slots can be trouble.

Hmm...it's an idea...I think I might go with the teleporter-map idea. It definetely solves my saving problem. Now, the new problem that's arisen is events and stuff - let's say I want to reveal, from the Jungle level, not only the flooded cavern, but the water world, the fortress, jungle ruins and others eventually...last I checked, each level only had 2 exits.

And the memory thing is stressing, yeah, didn't think of that O-o

KPhoenix - yeah, I actually just "came back" to the board after a little while of my life killing me, and just realized you made that...that'd be pretty sweet if I could use it.

The only problem with it though is that for SMW powerup's you can't have something such as fireball on 2 powerups. Fire Mario is pretty much useless when the Laser Suit is in the game, because the laser suit uses both the cape graphics and the fireball.

I had a Metroid concept back then.
As stated, Mario should be in a spaceship (sky pop[?]) or something.

Since you're only going to have one big level, it might be interesting to use some of the exit flags as other flags. They are already saved by the save routine, so no difficult ASM would be needed for that. Unless you're already using these flags for something, they would probably be the easiest way of creating seperations.

It's an idea. Right now, it's just that. I'm still trying to figure out what I'm gonna do or even if I can, before I start making levels left and right. I need to learn higher-level hacking or enlist people who do, and this is as much as a signing-on thread as an idea thread.

I'd love to get this off the ground, I just need a pair of wings. Or a jet engine, or something.

I could probably rip some graphics, but I'd need to know what Metroid game you want the graphics from. presumebly I'd say Super Metroid only.

I think it might be cooler if it used Mario (SMW, YI, SMAS etc) or custom graphics. Just because you're using Metroid-style gameplay doesn't mean you need to copy Super Metroid entirely.
