ROM Link! (replaced by Xkeeper)

Thats right! A VERY early version of Sonic 2 was found and bought for $1,500, and it is available to download! It's the same one that was featured on Nick Arcade WAAAAAAY back when!

Grab it while it's hot! I'm about to test it out!

Wouldn't this be just like handing out a rom? ... It pretty much is.

So, one level. I guess the real gem here is actually looking into the file or whatever.

One level? There are 4 working Sonic 2 levels, with one from Sonic 1. And one filled with gibberish.

Heh... It's interesting. The whole running-into-walls thing is mildly amusing, if only for a little while.

Weird. I beat Robotnick, he runs away, Sega Logo shows and its started over.

I'm using Gens+.

Maybe I somehow hit a button that resets it.

Sonic and (Tails)... I was really hesitant to post the rom link but thanks for puting it up here. Protos really don't belong to the company any way.

I got the debug Game Gienie code here: FFFFFA:0001.

This proto is great! have fun playing around with it!

I've already found some abject weirdness in that proto. However, so far nothing insanely new has come to our attention--I'm waiting for the S2B people to find out what that uncompiled code is all about.

Tanks: ...Pro Action Replay. Not Game Genie. More importantly, the fully-functional one is just C C C C Up Down Down Down Down Up then A+Start.

Xeo: That's how it is for the other proto, too. If you want to try the other levels, you have to use the level select code (Up Down Down Down Down Up) and go to them. None are complete, though, aside from a thoroughly broken version of Green Hill from Sonic 1.

EDIT: Doh. Sorry for repeating what you said, BooUrns.

What did the programmers do to screw up Green Hill Zone so Bad. Even the Loopdeloops are screwed up.

Someone needs to the hack Final Zone. Find out what happens after the screen goes purple.

What they did to screw Green Hill up so bad is something that most hackers/reverse-engineers would love to be able to do: They ported it almost entirely from one level format to another. Sonic 1 used 256x256 level chunks; Sonic 2 (including this proto) used 128x128s. They even fixed the loops to use Sonic 2's style (with the invisible object to switch layer priority). Only problem is that they seem to have overwritten most of the graphical mappings for the enemies, and the collision's broken all to hell.

I rather doubt there's much of note in Final Zone/Hill Top Act 3. Strikes me that it's loading a broken thing, and crashing the game as a result.

I downloaded this the other day but didn't bother to check it out until now.

The Sonic1 leftover level is amusing. And seeing how broken this beta is shows that it was in early devolopment, though I am surpised how much that have stayed the same. The bouncing into wall happens at strange places in a rather buggy way sometimes which is probably a good reason why they removed it.

Just me being silly...

Ailure, this isn't early in development at all. Also, this isn't a prototype - prototypes are extremely early. It having functional levels and music means it's well past Alpha stage, too. This is most likely a prerelease demonstration, assuming Sega followed a development plan that even approached sane.

I'm sure Sega wouldn't care about something like this, and it's not like its a licensed game or anything...

Anyways, yea I found some neat glitches and such, but something that really is weird, is run and skid off a hill and you will get a weird animation that seems to look new (like, never found in the beta/release rom).

I think the wall hit is kind of cool, but it does get annoying, and fast

I would consider it a prototype, because if you discard the fact that it is built off of Sonic 1's engine, then you get almost nothing but Sonic 2's first level with no physics (it seems to me that it uses Sonic 1's physics, because it is alot smoother then Sonic 2's release physics...(and by physics I mean how you jump/animate/move/camera scrolls))

This pretty much ends the Sonic 2 digging saga... After this, theres almost nothing else needed to know. They've solved the Dust Hill Zone story, the Genocide City story, the "time travel", and pretty much everything else! With the proto, we learned that it was built from Sonic 1, and at one time had the "wall hit" feature. We've basically learned everything needed to know! It's amazing how picked clean it is

I'm guessing next will be Sonic 3, as that diserves some fine combing...
Perhaps a beta of it could be found? (Unless there already is one...)

It's not up to Sega to care. The bottom line is that the ROM contains copyrighted code and trademarked characters. The Sega trademark at the beginning alone is enough to make this ROM OFF LIMITS. Unless the game is HOMEBREW (which this is clearly not) it is NOT PERMITTED. PERIOD.

Isn't it enough to just remove the link?

Discussing about the beta itself should be fine.

I'm just curious as to how it isn't up to Sega to care about their own copyright. Surely, something they never did and never will be making money off of could never possibly hurt them?

Well, a simple google search should suffice I guess. I didn't notice the Sega copyright at the bottom, so I suppose it is illegal...

That's not the problem. Unless Sega explicitly says that it's okay to redistribute this ROM-image, or releases it into the public domain, standard copyright restrictions are in effect.
